Guidance and Counseling Although much of the guidance work done in Lackawanna High School is individual, there are times when group guidance is very appropriate. The scene below bears out this point. Here are seen the personnel of the guidance department engaged in a group discussion. Group discussion serves several functions in any guidance program. lt offers reassurance to the student by showing him that other persons are concerned with the same problems. The interaction which goes on between members of the group stimulates the student to clarify his own thinking processes. It serves to point up and highlight the topic under discussion and, therefore, to pro- mote serious thought and deliberation. It helps the student to see other points of view besides his own, and encourages him to evaluate alternative courses of action. In all these ways, group discussion helps the student to think through his problem and in doing so to take the first step toward a satis- factory solution of it. --..-...W - - Edward Cosgrove and Nicholas Milano, Guidance Directors and students: Gerald De- Pasquale, Margaret Pahl, Dolores Ray, and Bill Patronik. 7
