42.4 1948 PUBLISHED ANNUALLY BY THE STUDENTS OF LACKAWANNA HIGH SCHOOL- FRANKLIN AND LINCOLN ANNEXES LINCOLN ANNEX FRANKLIN ANNEX 2 LEO A. IOYCE Superintendent of Schools By a wise evaluation of the best features of traditional and modern education, Mr. Ioyce has sustained and enriched the scope and ei- fectiveness of the Lackawanna School System. Despite his many executive duties, he has al- ways been interested in our school activities and we are grateful for his encouragement and practical support. 1 sw Board of Education The stait of the Lackawannan joins the faculty and other students of Lackawanna High School in expressing deep regard for the constant care, watchful providence and wise leadership the Board of Education has provided in the operation and administration of our schools. Seated: Steven Vukelic, Anthony Moretti, Stanley Strobeck, Ralph Carestio, Stephen Ryszka, George Beres, Alphonse Kuwik. Standing: Leo Ioyce, Superintendent, Iohn Griffiths, Clerk, Iohn Pillion, Attorney, Thomas Ioyce, Matthew Kaczor, Thomas McNamara Purchasing Agent. 3 MRS. ANNE AUSTIN We who know her understand the hardships she undergoes in separating herself from this school. To try to lighten the burden, we, the Senior class of 1948, humbly and affectionately dedicate our yearbook to this woman who herself dedicated her life to edu- cation. Our token is small but it is given with an unwavering, true grati- tude for her outstanding qualities as teacher and friend. May its minuteness be supplemented by the faith in which it is tendered. Dedication There comes a time in the life of every educator when close bonds must be severed, relationships altered, and study rooms forgotten. Thus this year heralds the leaving of Mrs. Anne Austin, a friend and teacher here for many, fruitful years. Her two most splendid qualities-a quiet dignity and an internal warmth-gained for her not only the affection and respect of all students but also the admiration of the whole faculty. And grace that won who saw to wish her stay. -Iohn Milton IOHN P. OSBORNE RAYMOND C. BURKE Principal, Lackawanna High School Principal, Lincoln Annex In the competent hands of these administrators rests the responsibility for seeing that the day-by-day functioning of our schools, with their multi- plicity of details, realizes its real and ultimate purpose-the education of youth. They have performed well. v 'ax lOHN L. SABUDA CLINTON C. COUHIG EDWARD F. The scene below bears out this point. Here are seen the personnel of the guidance department engaged in a group discussion. Group discussion serves several functions in any guidance program. lt offers reassurance to the student by showing him that other persons are concerned with the same problems. The interaction which goes on between members of the group stimulates the student to clarify his own thinking processes. It serves to point up and highlight the topic under discussion and, therefore, to pro- mote serious thought and deliberation. It helps the student to see other points of view besides his own, and encourages him to evaluate alternative courses of action. In all these ways, group discussion helps the student to think through his problem and in doing so to take the first step toward a satis- factory solution of it. --..-...W - - Edward Cosgrove and Nicholas Milano, Guidance Directors and students: Gerald De- Pasquale, Margaret Pahl, Dolores Ray, and Bill Patronik. 7 VICTOR SMITH EDWARD SMITH Vocational Department Science Department FLORENCE CRAIG MARGARET WIDMER Mathematics Department Language Department FACULTY LACKAWANNA HIGH SCHOOL Row l: Celestine Shea, Iohn Coughlin, Arthur Willis, Ada Long, Florence Craig, Mary Pace, Ethel Twist, William Carney, Thomas Barrett, Paul Munich. KEATING Director of Vocational and Industrial Education To some men, the achievement of a worthy goal takes on the aspect of a crusade with all its attendant ostentation. Other men work quietly, serenely but not the less zealously to attain their cherished objectives. In such a subdued and modest manner, did Mr. Keating strive to bring the opportunities for industrial and vocational training to the youth of our city. His death, during the school year, is an irreparable loss to the vocational program. But in another sense it is a personal bereavement to his family, his many friends and his asso- ciates from whom there has been taken a man of warm friendship, articulate loyalty, and an admirable zeal for his profession. Regrettably, he passed on when, like his own manhood, the fruits of his labors were in full flourish. But to the students of our school, Mr. Keating's memory is ever enshrined in his achievements for education. WALTER H. Kocr-1 Director of Band, Instructor in Music At a moment of triumph, as the strains of our National Anthem blended into the majestic roar of the Falls, the baton of the Great Band- master timed the closing measure ot a life dedicated to music. When Mr. Koch came to Lackawanna, he began patiently to build the musical organization oi which we all were to become so proud. To the boys and girls who studied under his inspiring leadership, Mr. Koch imparted his own glowing enthusiasm, and instilled in them a zeal for perfection re- flected in the accomplishment of many of his pupils. His was a life dedicated to his work and he gave unstintingly of his energy and of the benefits of his wide and varying experi- ence. He has left with us a high standard of accomplishment and in tribute to his memory, we shall strive to maintain it. ENN ey Z'-T. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS 1. Robert Mokski Vice-President 2. Nancy Davis Secretary 3. Peter Mancuso President 4. Robert Budzyn Treasurer Class of 1948 In short and rapid strokes is pictured here a sketch of the four wonderful years of our high-school life: not a day-by-day account of classroom activities wherein the real purpose of high school-education for life-was accomplished, but a potpourri of nostalgic memories. As the freshman class of 1944-45, We were deployed in three schools - Main Building, Franklin, Lincoln. But in each, September's first school days meant the same: the excite- ment of new routines, new environment, new faces. The opening of school had been delayed for three weeks, we recall, by the raging polio epidemic. Along with the delights of novel school life, quickly in the first weeks we were made to feel the inferiority of a freshman: the sophomores introduced us to many ingenious forms of hazing. We, however, survived and went on to fit ourselves into the high-school pattern, ever strange to grammar-school graduates. . Noteworthy, too, was our first understanding of that ominous word- jug. How familiar it was to become to some of our classmates! The year passed swiftly and excitingly, shortened by the late beginning, and quickie Christmas and Easter vacations. We were maturing in many directions, as new knowledge opened before us. Great and meaningful events, too, occurred-Roosevelt's shocking death in April, 1945, and the end of the European war in May. September, 1946: No longer were We lowly freshies : now a new class of freshmen learned how terrible can be freshman turned sophomores. As we returned to school, great world-shaking events were enacted: the dropping of the first atomic bomb shattered the universe into a new age: V-I day, at last! Touching lightly and in a minor key over the school year: Messrs. Burke and Sabuda one day discovered more complete attendance records could be kept by awaiting the ar- rival of caddies Cnameless herej at the fifth green of Wanakah's golf course. It was the year of the big snow of December: no longer could old-timers tell of bigger ones-there were never any bigger in Western New York's history. Happy result: no school for several days. Unhappy result: no Christmas pageants at Lincoln and the Main Building, so eagerly looked for. 12 Defeats in the basketball play-offs at Kenmore, but keep on reading, for we gloriously made up for them before we left school. How much is left unsaid! The few touches do recall the year to you. That's the purpose of this slight account: we feel it helps you to fill it in completely. Iunior Year 1946-47: increasing maturity as new subjects and new knowledge unfold before us. The war is over: the boys are coming back from the services, but it is still an upset, troubled world. Remembrances : Mr. Too1e's fine amateur show at Lincoln Annex-mostly Iunior amateurs. The roller-skate party of the Main Building Iuniors. Lots of fun, and some knew how to skate. Lincoln's stirring Moving-up Day CMay Queen, Flo Poloncarzj: the prom. The enjoyable Iunior Prom at the Main Building. Picnics at Chestnut Ridge-rain but no dampening of spirits. Senior Year: At last we are one class! As in Freshman year, new acquaintances, new faces, as Lincoln and Main Iuniors meet. Late October's Halloween party-a really splendid affair-makes us socially one class. 'Member the football boys' burlesque? As School day follows school day we realize the fleeting time and begin to think of our future. What to do? What field of work to enter? Have these four years-so happy, so care- free, so meaningful-passed so swiftly? D Who can forget the basketball championships at Kenmore High gym, championships we dreamed of winning and finally did, and the assembly honoring the conquerors, and the half-day holiday following? Happy days! And now the years draw to a culminating close. Final examinations and graduation loom: the life for which seriously we have tried to prepare ourselves beckons. Have we helped you to recall your happy many-sided high-school years? Archangelo Petricca-Boys' State 1947 Youth and the World Today, almost three years after the devastation of war, mankind achingly seeks for the harmony of nations. We are looking to the future, in the eternal hope for a new world- a World of peace and security. Only through education can the peoples of the World once again set up a peaceful universe and produce mutual understanding and tolerance. The lessons of history, if mis- taught, misunderstood, or disregarded, might have to be learned again-and in the same hard Way. Only through proper guidance of today's youth-tomorrow's leaders-can we hope to establish peaceful relations among nations. Surely, clear thinking, self-reliance, and creative ability-all results of good education-make for better leaders and a better organized world. Youth must be taught the good citizenship that is the basis of any true peace. If the youth of today is taught to think clearly and to be genuinely concerned about the welfare of others, then most certainly can mankind move forward. Education has the grave responsibility for the future of building righteous men and Women. 32 ml LIFE AT LACKAWANNA HIGH HOME ROOM 214 Row l: Helen Evans, Rose Mary Black, Katherine Alimonti, Dolores Corbett, Madeline Salerno, Lorraine Polanski, Esther Tomasik, Mary Brown, Loel Krone, Teresa Luciano, Iean Irving. K enmore 6 Golf Team Golf is not a new sport at Lackawanna but the phe- nomenal success it has enjoyed during the past few years has its novel aspects. It is due mainly to the self- developed ability and interest of the team members aided by the direction of our faculty adviser. Because the plaudits of the gallery are few, we want to include in these pages our congratulations to these heroes of the fairways. Bos EMPRIC LEO Wc1sLo MACKEY ANTONIK ED Kocur STAN Wcrsno 46 We Are On The tWay! In a typically vigorous and full athletic program Cfootball, track, baseball, and plenty of intramural contests of several kindsj Lackawanna High enjoyed a fine year in sports- all in keeping with a traditional love of spirited competition. And champions were ac- claimed! Football-autumn's grand spectacle-was represented by a good Lackawanna squad that gave and took in Western New York's toughest company-the Niagara Frontier League. The season's record C2 wins, 2 ties, 4 lossesj does not indicate how hard our laddies fought and how close is victory or defeat in this strenuous league. And balm for wounds: we won the Iunior Varsity championship with four successive victories! All in all, observers agree that our fine squads in both varsity and Iunior football and the strong competitive spirit displayed this year augur well for Lackawanna High's 1949 foot- ball season under the new floodlights. Starting slowly, the Steel City's basketball varsity seemed to deny its pre-season promise C3 losses in first 4 gamesj. But how they came on! Their coming on was grandly and excit- ingly culminated in the winning of the Play-off Championship of the Niagara Frontier League at Kenmore High gym, where their two decisive wins over Niagara Falls and Tonawanda definitely showed them to be the best court squad of this good league. But wait, that's not all-Lackawanna duplicated its Iunior Varsity football triumph by slashing through its opponents to a second basketball championship. Then too, victories over our local rival, O. L. V., were exciting and decisive. Lacka- wanna's cup of joy in these March days was indeed bubbling over. It was truly a full and fine athletic year, only the highlights of which have been lightly touched upon here. The whole school and the citizens of Lackawanna are proud of the ath- letes who have added their bit to the tradition of fairly played and strongly contested athletics. The Man Behind Our Sports This is the efficient and untiring faculty director ' who draws up schedules, arranges transportation, sells the tickets, and controls our athletic supplies and equip- ment. And did you know that he also saw every athletic contest that L. H. S. played during the past year? Did you know that he is largely responsible that our teams are the best outfitted in the district? In the meantime, he directed the activities of a fine cheerleading squad. And don't forget that he devotes his main energy to developing the scientific aptitudes of his physic students. Despite all of these various duties, Mr. Doherty finds time to make our sports pro- gram comprehensive and well co-ordinated. 47 EXTRACURRICULAR A solo with coke Hey Doc! Easy on the eats. Magazine Campaign The magazine subscription campaign so successfully inaugurated by the class of 1947, was planned and carried out even more successfully by the class of 1948. Building upon the large number of sub- scribers secured during the year previous, our class with a splendid show of enthusi- asm and a fine sense of business acumen. opened the campaign on February ll and by February 20, had surpassed our goal of S3,000. Special Commendation must be given this year to the support of the underclassmen who in the final totals equalled the work done by the senior home rooms. It is most encouraging to note, that the senior class has the full and complete assistance of the entire student body in this annual fund-raising campaign. The plot revolves about the efforts of a mother to arrange a suitable marriage for her eligible but indifferent daughter. The sit- uations were natural, the dialogue spark- ling, and the portrayal by the cast was hailed as excellent. On the closing night, many were unable to find seats and the SRO sign was posted long before curtain time. The Director and his cast, as well as the technical and production staff, rang all four bells with this outstanding pre- sentation. Lincoln Annex Varsity Show The 1948 presentation by the Lincoln An- nex players could well be called a pictorial and musical Americana. Under the direc- tion of Miss Cantwell, the musical theme moved from the plains of the West, to the levees of the Mississippi and to the sky- scrapers of a metropolis. The sets, designed by Miss Czerniejewski and her students, were cr fluorescent backdrop to a melodious picture of America, past and present. The show was sold out for five perform- ances which is a tribute to the supervision, the excellent talent and the artistic skill of a company numbering over a hundred and fifty. 59 BASEBALL SQUAD How 1: Ioseph Kowaluk, Iames Vertalino, Donald Cummings, Robert Swieck, Dante Guiliani, Iames Viterna, Gerald De Pasquale, Aldo Filipetti, Icy Lovelli. The group is relatively small, but in the near future it is the desire of the club to accommodate all the students of the school who have an eagerness to learn photog- raphy. Under the leadership of Louis Hughes the club has had a very successful year. It has rendered many services to other groups: produced many pictures, and provided a hobby for many. The group, although small, has carried out three major projects, The first one provided Valen- tine favors for one of the Veterans hospitals. Then the group hemmed towels that were sent to the chil- dren oi war-torn Europe. Our linal project was a scrapbook picturing the many activities oi our school. This will be sent to a secondary school in Poland. .--.The Iunior Red Cross was organized to make young people aware of their responsibilities as citizens, toward the wel- fare of all people. In our small way, we feel that we have fulfilled this major objective of the Iunior Red Cross.
