Y. 1946 Foreword The war is won but what is the shape of the future? True, the machinery to preserve world peace and cooperation has been set in motion in the form of the United Nations Organization. This auspicious beginning, how- ever, can only have meaning insofar as its final implementing force, the young people of all nations, share certain fundamental values. Among these are the dignity and worth of the human person, equal rights regardless of race, sex or religion, and respect for the obligations of a treaty. It is thus the peculiar sphere of free, democratic education to provide the essential basis for world community in an atomic age by imparting to our youth a spirit of understanding, tolerance, cooperation and brotherhood. Dedicated solely to this ideal, American youth can then assume its logical position of world leadership in the furtherance of democratic ideals. This has always been the guiding principle of our school administrators. The Board of Education is the policy- making body and the Superintendent,s office forms the admin- istrative department. It is their mutual job to coordinate school affairs within the city of Lackawanna. Elected by the taxpayers of our city, the Board members receive as compensation only the personal satisfaction of a job well done. It is with a deep sense of pride that we salute these fine, enterprising men who are responsible for the estab- lishment of our educational pattern. Under their vigilant guidance, the facilities of the system have gradually been expanded, and even during the war, progress has been unretarded. Their sincere desire to aid the community through greater educational opportunity has in- stigated all their enterprises. Through their keen observations and foresight, we as stu- dents, daily enjoy an excellent opportunity for a good education. 6 1 . LEO A. Class Histor Years hence, as we sweep onward through the deviating tides of life, eager to establish a position for ourselves in both the social and the business and professional worlds, we will ever pre- serve a place in our hearts for the school which laid the foundation for our futures - Lackawanna High School. Setting out into the world after commencement we will be in much the same position in which we found ourselves four years ago, when we first launched our high school careers. We will be confronted with problems very similar to those we encountered as inexperienced freshmen, adjust- ing ourselves to the rituals of high school life. In order to revive memories of these bygone days, let us retrace our steps and review the episodes of the past four years. Turning baclc the pages that record the passage of time, we find ourselves as humble fresh- men, anxious, yet fearful upon entering high school-a new phase of life. The tyro class is soon placed under the guidance of the upperclassmen, who do their utmost to dispel doubt and un- easiness. Through them, we learn to acquire new friends, new tastes, and to adjust ourselves to the fascinating, unfamiliar conditions in which we are placed. The Camera Club dances become very important factors in combating the shyness of us frosh, and in introducing us to the school's social life. Under the direction of our upperclass guardians and in the presence of newly-found 16 ai' friends, we lose our reticence and settle back to enjoy our new life. The conclusion of our first year finds us no longer novices, but competent high school students, ready for whatever the future holds. With the opening of our sophomore year, the Class of 1946 bursts energetically upon the school and its faculty. Forgetful of the apprehension and anxiety which gripped us last year, we now go about with a definite air of importance. No longer are we the youngest class in schoolg therefore, having passed the most difficult year, we are anxious to secure for ourselves a definite spot in ex- tracurricular school life. Hidden ambitions and talents are revealed as we turn our attentions to the various clubs in the school. Literary inclinations find satisfaction in the Lackawannan Staff, while the musicians clamor to gain admittance to the orchestra and glee club. There is scarcely one event throughout this year that does not find in its midst an enthusiastic sophomore advocate. We have become a very definite part of school life this year, and although we welcome the summer and the endless sources of pleasure it brings with it, we look forward with fervent anticipa- tion to our junior year. After our belated return to our Alma Mater in this Fall of 1944, we accept cheerfully our new subjects and classes. The senior activities hold a great place of interest in the junior class, for we realize that at a time not so far distant we shall be seniors, faced with the same responsibilities and duties they now possess. We find ourselves more and more concerned with student activities. Our adaptability to the intricacies of student management is displayed by our skill and dexterity in the organization and handling of our junior Prom. After choosing our representatives and forming- the various commit- tees for the preparation of the dance, all our hopes are fulfilled when the prom is judged a huge success. As Class Day approaches, we take our places as ushers and archbearers. These exercises remind us once more of the new responsibilities we shall assume next year, and we resolve to accept them gravely and to honor the seniors of the preceding years. We are now at the beginning of our senior year-the last year of our 'high school career. Certain that the experiences of the past three years will furnish us with the skill and wisdom in organization, we set about first to elect our Senior Officers. Then, in the course of a few weeks, we find October is already upon us, and with it, the annual senior Halloween Party. Here, amid witches, ghosts, and black cats, we renew old acquaintances once more and discover new friends. With the management of class affairs in the capable hands of the officers and the senior commit- tee, we turn our thoughts for the moment to the forthcoming Spring Play. This year's production finds many willing and talented seniors available for roles and for the numerous backstage jobs. At the presentation, after weeks and weeks of conscientious rehearsals, the play, Pop Always Pays, is accorded the very best reception, and another success is added to that list of which Lackawanna High School is justly proud. The days are fast drawing to a close, bringing with them memories we shall always cherish: of Class Day, and a last review of our high school lifeg of the Senior Prom, our last high school dance, of the Senior banquet, and finally, of our graduation. The book now closes on these most treasured days, which will remain with us forever. Into whatever tomorrow holds for us we will carry these remembrances and trust that, with them, we may surmount all barriers to our success and may ever honor the school that equipped us for the future. 17 0115155 ill This being our last will and testament, we, the graduates of 1946, exultant in our accomplishments???, about to depart through these ancient portals fby the grace of heaven, the skin of our teeth, and our kind- hearted teachers, do hereby give, distribute, offer, devise, leave, dispose, fpause for breath, hand-down, con- vey submit, and bequeath these, our most cherished possessions. We mustn't forget poor ole, Bill. He worked so hard on the yearbook that I found exactly 11 more gray hairs. Honestly, I think he deserves more than that, don't you? I think he should have an even dozen . U We will also give you' helpful hints on getting along more smoothly with your teachers.- To get on the better side of Mr. Coughlin, during lunch time, you should throw oranges at one another and yell Roo'-yas , Diligently, we leave Mr. Yoviene lFather John, and his everlasting One more minute to go And last, but not least, a hearty farewell to Mr. Cosgrove and his ever-progressing family DOLORES ZAJAC 18 rupherg In this year of our Lord, 1971, we are attempting to set down as conscientiously as possible, the details of our strange chronicle. The reader has our assurance that every bit of exaggeration has been painstakingly excluded. Because of a peculiar ingredient in our food, about 1946, we drifted off into a deep slumber, awakening to find ourselves attended by two Angels of Mercy, Irene Dynda and Helen Miklos. Immediately, they took us to confer with those brilliant consulting specialists-Roland Hammond, Herbert Smith and Joseph Kisselg who recommended a few days of peaceful solitude. Having nothing to do, we turned on the radio to hear the distinguished Bernard Murphy and his up-to-the- minute-news compiled from the latest bulletins. After that, we leisurely listened tp Stanley Gorsica's program, Swing and Swoon with Stan the goon, featuring that lovely, ravishing girl-vocalist, Roddie Rienass. Their moans and groans had a soothing effect on us and we recuperated rapidly. In the midst of Irene Guz's program, Calories Count, the loudspeaker blared out- Be on the lookout for Robert Haggerty and his accomplice, Thomas Weir. They just escaped from Helen Quinnan's Quaint Un- questionablesv flf one isn't crazy when one enters, it is unquestionable that one will be when one departsj . These characters are dangerous and are heavily armed with disintegrating pistols. fYoii put them in water and pfttt! they disintegratej Weir has already stolen his father's mustache and is furtively attempting to -steak his mother's. joe Moretti and Eugene Panfil, sauntering nonchalantly down the Platinum Boulevard, heard this report and disappeared suddenly only to reappear as-ah! our heroes, ATOM and sidekick, lVfOLECULE .5'Their grim appearance as they pulled in their ions and zipped away in their electron, augured no good for those hombres, Haggerty and Weir. X , ' You can imagine our impatience to be at the world premiere of The Road to Lackawannan starring that captivating, alluring actress, Glama Irene Bernadzinski La Vere and that dashing newcomehr, that suave Van Carlton Hohler johnson. Their performance was superbg magnificent. .A At the Ritzy Rendezvous, we perceived that nationally-known writer, Paul Fiore, engaged in a deep con- versation with those popular glamour girls, the enticing Lorraine Zajac, and the bewitching model, Chesterine Tyrpak. Startled by a familiar sound, we turned around to find it issuing from the lovely mouth of vivaciqus- Mary Violanti, employed in her old occupation. 1 Then, slowly, the lights dimmed softly and from the shadows emerged the celebrated Latin-:American dancers, romantic John Trotta Cavalyaro and Pepita ' Warwick, performing their famous Dance of the Fleas. For the Hnale, Thomas LeRoy and his Flying Vampiresf, the vampires being Peter' Vinolus, Al Evans, Arthur Damstetter, and john Covino, executed splendid acrobatic feats. - Feeling a bit drowsy, we knew that the food we consumed was affecting us again so we hurriedly rushed to Woodrow Christ's Beauty Salon. We wanted to get fixed up before we became completely unconscious and left this enchanting world to return to 1946. Woody waited on us personally, and saw that we had the best of everything. 1 must take advantage of this and thank Leo Baldelli personally. He did a marvelous job on my toenails. As we were departing, the Mademoiselles Yoviene and Gutowski, eminent Parisian artists, walked in. The last thing we remember was that two angels, Gloria Fernandez and jean Layman escorted us to a soft, snow-white, fluffy cloud upon which we rested our weary heads and fell asleep immediately. . Q A When we awoke, we found ourselves back in 1945 with this fond remembrance. of our own graduating class. 1 - DOLORES ZAJ AC MARGARET MILLER 19 SENIOR COMMITTEE Row I-Rose Marie Tomasulo, Mary Alice Yoviene, Margaret Ginnetti, Secretaryg Michael Matusick, Presidentg Dorothy Tomaszewska, Vice-Presidentg Robert Balbierz, Treasurerg Irene De Pasquale. From the tense days of Guadalcanal to the eventful scene on the deck of the Missouri, you attended your classes feeling always the uneasi- ness and the uncertainty of troubled times. Many of you thought con- stantly of fathers and brothers overseas, but all of you carried on courage- ously, scorning the war-time alibis for failure and misconduct. As a class you may be proud of your adjustment to the demands of war and of your reconversion to the responsibilities of peace. Knowing as you do the agony of war, you cannot ignore the need for a reorganization of the world that will effectively prevent the recurrence of such a conflict. The core of such reorganization is education. Your teachers at Lackawanna have opened to you the doors to useful knowledge and moral guidance. You have been offered the tools of independent thinking and have been trained to know and accept your responsibilities. You are there- fore prepared to seek the truth and make right use of it. You are now ready to continue your studies or to embark on a career in bus- iness or industry. In any event, your school will always be interested in your future success. Particularly are we concerned about your social, moral and spiritual relationships. Know and unselfishly discharge the duties of citizen- ship. Make your full contribution to the upbuilding and upholding of democracy. Know and be ambitious to realize the ideals of true manhood and womanhood and may God be with you all your days. In September of 1945, the three buildings of Lackawanna High School played host, for the first time, to a gangling horde of Freshmen, freed from the trials a.nd tribulations of grammar school, and, although pretty green and still wet behind the ears, we were eager to learn and earn a place for ourselves at L. H. S. From this humble beginning has risen the mighty Junior Class of 1945-46. Among our many accomplish- ments we boast of having had our share of athletes representing L. H. S. in league competition. Juniors, furthermore, are represented in the many clubs which promote good feeling throughout the school. Ar the Lincoln Annex those Friday night socials have become almost an institution. Although their Christ- mas Pageant was cancelled, because of the weather, the Juniors at Lincoln Annex outdid themselves in bringing before us one of the outstanding Varsity Shows in the classis history. This year, as in years gone by, we are looking forward to the day when we will become seniors. Next year, when this hope becomes a reality, we can look back with pride upon our class record. Our accomplishments have been many and our failures few. Let us hope that next year and in years to come, we can measure up to the high standards which we have set, as the Junior Class of 1946. - LINCOLN ANNEX OFFICERS Left to righl-Catherine Lalcta- sich, Treasurerg Gerald McDon- ough, President, Jane Fiore, Secre- tary, Edward Pericalc, Vice-Presi- dent. 40 LACKAXVANNA HIGH SCHOOL Non' I---Mary Kowalczylc, Alice Darmstedter, Rosemarie Cheman, Yolanda Basile, Theresa Barnas, Ilatriria Lachajczylc, Mary Boduch, Cecilia Wallis, Loretta Szewc, Elizabeth Warwick, Ruth Busch, Ellen Ryszlta. In terminating a long, colorful teaching career, Mr. Edward A. Gunn has left behind him a tradition of ideals to be emulated. His rare teaching ability and deep understanding of human nature, coupled with a sense of humor, has endeared him to hundreds of former stu- dents and teachers. Ed was always affable, considerate, always ready to give sound, practical advice. As a school administrator he never lowered a standard or compromised a principle. His influence will ever remain with us as a guide and an inspiration. 49 Alma Mater Wl:lJ5H,JJ:l:5JJJJI hail to thee, clear L. H. This year, our group was organized to include a limited membership, regardless of scholastic standing, in the belief that concealed talent brings no reputation. Our primary purpose is to foster an interest in books and to become better acquainted with the school library. At the meetings, the third Tuesday of each month,,short busi- ness discussions are carried on and refreshments are served. 56 SPANISH CLUB-LACKAWANNA HIGH SCHOOL Row I -Teresa Anthony, Fileen Hanley, Virginia Campbell, Anelida Mondelo, Peter Mancuso, Secretary: Herbert Malyalc, President, Miss Richardson, Faculty Advisor, Boris Zilka, Vice-Presi- dent: Helen Tutlco, Treasurer, Caroline Hund, Gloria Fernandez, David Doyle. Its active and progres- sive membership has played a notable part in promoting interest in school exhibiting and social activities by many and varied pictures taken by Camera Club members and by spon- soring a series of enjoyable socials. The art of photography, however, is uppermost in the minds of this alert group. Their zeal for taking and de- veloping pictures of excellent quality is boundless and many of them find their way into the Yearbook. All pic- tures go into an album which records the progress of the club and preserves as a pictorial record the activities car- ried on throughout the school year. This year the Lackawanna High School players, under the direction of Mr. Edward Smith, have succeeded in providing for our entertainment the highly amusing comedy, Pop Always Pays,', which received noteworthy comment as a fine motion picture a few years ago. The story deals with the efforts of Pop to prevent his daughter from marrying by making a brash wager. This wager leads Pop into financially embarrassing situations and finally to jail. The lively events of the play cul- minating in a happy outcome make Pop Always Paysv one of the best of a long line of superb comedies presented at Lackawanna. Sabuda When I want your advice Henry Flyde, I'll ask for it and then I won't 'alce it. Some equally delightful entertainment was offered by the students of the Lincoln Annex in their presentation of Henpeclced Henry, a gay farce whose plot revolves about timid Henry Hyde, under the complete rule of his domineering wife, Erilla. In order to escape for a time from Erilla's tenacious grasp, poor Henry conceives a fictitious tale about a distant convention that he must attend. The trouble in which our hero becomes involved by deceiving his wife and the hilarious man- ner in which he escapes, malces this play a choice bit of entertainment. 'QHenpeclcecl Henry is a worthy addition to the list of Lincoln Annex successes. SPORTSMANSHIP COMMITTEE OF THE NIAGARA FRONTIER LEAGUE This organization was established in 1945 by the schools com- prising the Niagara Frontier League for the purpose of maintaining good sportsmanship and encouraging friendlier relations among the students of these schools. It was decided that two meetings are to be held each year-one after the football and one after the basketball seasons. At these meet- ings problems affecting the various schools are discussed and settled. Representative students from each school in the league attend these meetings. The success of this organization depends, not on the representa- tives alone, but on the students who are responsible for the caliber of sportsmanship throughout the league. 70 ATHLETIC DIRECTORS MR. Football When the great world conflict had finally been victoriously concluded in August of that year and the nations of the world turned to the winning of the peace, Coach Stanley Bukaty came back from service in the United States Navy, to resume his duties as head mentor of football in Lackawanna High School. His first actions began in September, when he assembled Nhopeful aspirants of gridiron fame and inaug- urated the initial practice sessions. It was evident then that the team, although it might not achieve immor- tality, would nevertheless, long be remembered as a hard-fighting, never-say-die group, fully worthy of carrying the colors of our Alma Mater into battle. From the opening kickoff of the first contest against North Tonawanda at our own Stadium, until the referee had blown the final whistle of the Watertown encounter, which was played in a sea of mud on Thanks- giving Day, the boys lived up to every tradition of sportsmanship ever possessed by previous editions of Steel City athletes. - While their record in the won and lost columns was unfavorable, this can never tell the whole story of football in 1945. TONAWANDA In the season's inaugural at home, Gene Zadzilka and joe Moretti paced our winning attack with 10 points each, while the second game at Twin City found Ed Kaczor racking up 11 to lead our scorers to victory. The final rallies were L. H. S. 38, Tonawanda 253 L. H. S. 47, Tonawanda 26. LACKAWANNA VS. LASALLE The Explorers proved no match for the Steelmen by losing on both occasions. The hrst contest at La- Salle saw L. H. S. on top, 28-18, and the second on our court was won by the Blue and Grey, 51-28. Joe Moretti hit for 10 and 14 points in these two contests. LACKAWANNA VS. NORTH TONAWANDA Usually powerful North Tonawanda was an unwilling victim to our juggernaut and for the first time in a good many years was defeated twice. The first victory, scored at North Tonawanda, was sparked by Gene Zadzilka's 12 points, he again lead the Steelmen on our court in the second encounter with 18 points. The results were L. H. S. 33, North Tonawanda 215 L. H. S. 38, North Tonawanda 30. LACKAWANNA VS. LOCKPORT A fast breaking Lockport quintet was downed twice during the regular season. At home, in the first con- test, we won, 38-29, largely through the efforts of joe Moretti who threw in 15 points. Ed Kaczor threw in 3 game winning foul shots at Lockport when he shaded the Lions, 33-32. LACKAWANNA VS. NIAGARA FALLS The champions proved a jinx team by nosing us out, 32-30 and 34-32. Bob Balbierz paced the losing attack in the opener at home, while Gene Zadzilka continued his torrid scoring pace in the Power City with ll points. LACKAWANNA VS. KENMORE Always a bitter foe, Kenmore whipped us, 49-31, on the Blue Devils' court in January. March, however, found a revenge-seeking Steelmen's quintet beating the Kenmorites, 34-33, in one of the most exciting contests played on the local hardwood. LACKAWANNA VS. TROTT Captain John Trotta set the season's scoring record for the squad by notching 19 points as we trounced the Redmen 'at Niagara Falls, 47-35. Gene Zadzilka returned to his position as leading point-getter by throwing in ll points in the second contest, played at home, which we won, 30-26. LACKAWANNA VS. OUR LADY OF VICTORY For the third time in four years we won the city crown by trouncing our cross-town rivals in two hard fought contests. In the first, Joe Moretti and Gene Zadzilka vied for scoring honors with 8 apiece and Ed Kaczor engineered the second win with a lucky 13. The scores read, L. H. S. 28, O. L. V. 235 L. H. S. 41, O. L. V. 30. y Q LACKAWANNA VS. WATERTOWN Trying to win for the first time against the upstaters, the Steelmen made the trip in vain for we were defeated, 50-40. joe Moretti paced the losing cause with 15 points. PLAYOFFS 1946 After finishing second during the regular season, the whole squad was primed for the oncoming post- season series. Given the assignment of beating Kenmore in its own court, the boys proved almost worthy of the task but lost a heartbreaking 34-32 struggle. The boys suffered an emotional letdown in the consolation game against Lockport and lost, 48-38. Ed Kaczor was tops for the losers with 14. 77 CHEERLEADERS The cheerleaders represent the picturesque side of sports. Attired in costumes of grey and blue, the colors of our alma mater, they are seen at all the sports events throughout the year.
