'Ghis yearbook is an earnest endeavor to preserve for the Qseniors the memory of their carefree high school years--- to depict for the underclassmen another year of progress toward a cherished goal. As men and women it will be the duty of these youths to rebuild a shattered world into a land of peace and plenty, to create a haven of happiness out of a mire of desolation. .Bet theirs be the qualities of courage, understanding, and perseverance f 6

no agua 0 Lrg LUNGED abruptly from the normal pursuits of everday life into the surg- ing and chaotic stream of international strife, with what outlook would the American serviceman greet the tasks placed upon his shoulders? VVhat could dispel his typically American attitude of complacent and lackadaisical optimism? We have but to examine the record of character development and scholastic training of any American youth. His training was such that it imbued in him thc admirable and requisite quality of performing his tasks conscientiously and duti- fully and enabled him to cope capably with hardships without fretting or reluctance. These acquisitions, indirectly engendered by adept and competent teaching. prove the most important and most adaptable assets which the serviceman takes with him. Preparing' him even more completely for his militant duties were his scholastic assignments which acclimated him to the need for industrious and consistent appli- cation to work, while the lessons of teamwork and initiative accentuated the strength of these accomplishments. His extracurricular activities accustomed him to leader- ship. to discipline, and to order. His. indeed. was a well-rounded and balanced program, granting him the full exercise and development of abilities and indirectly adapting him to the tasks now occasioned by life under wartime conditions. The application of this acquired training' will invariably offset the cancerous and harmful growth of over-optimistic and indifferent attitudes. It will engender and cultivate an attitude of open-mindedness, supplementing all other inherent. praiscworthy qualities. These same qualities and attributes generated by his education will serve the American soldier not only in wartime, but also in his postwar existence. As a citizen of a free world and armed with these same traits, he will aid in fostering the ideals and doctrines that are democracy. 8
