CLASS HISTORY 1--. The Birth of a New Day! This was the phase which lingered in the minds of the Class of '39 on that first day of our high school career when we became freshies. Timidly we surveyed the school structure which was to us a most thrilling sight. Little did we realize that in four years we would be bidding L. H. S. good-bye, perhaps forever. But we did realize that we were about to begin four of the most glorious years of our life. As freshmen, we were, of course, rather meek and went about with a dazed expres- sion on our faces. Everyday brought new insights into high school life. Many of us, overcoming our timidity, began to engage in the various activities which are offered in our school. Those of us who were musically inclined joined either the Band, Orchestra, or Glee Club. Others who had a love for the stage took up dramatics, while others chose debating as their special line of endeavor. Class Day was a most awe-inspiring sight. Our Class Day seemed so far away that we were a little envious of the ludcy Seniors. Returning in September, we realized that we were no longer freshies, but so- phisticated sophomores. We felt more at ease and began taking an active part in school life. The Band, Orchestra, and Glee Club increased in number as more of our class engaged in musical endeavors. A few of our husky lads took part in sports, while others contented themselves with joining some of the various clubs. When we returned for our junior Year, we understood more fully what our task was to be. Because of our closer contact with the seniors, we discovered what was expected of the upper classmen and what standards we were expected to uphold. Al- though our work was becoming more difiicult, we still had time to keep up our interests outside of class and maintain our honor roll standings. In September, 1938 we became high and mighty seniors. Through diligent work, coupled with patience, we had reached our goal. We now were the most envied mem- bers of a great institution. We, as exalted seniors, took the leading roles in school activities. Some of us won important roles in our school plays. Many of us became cfhcers of the various clubs, and the athletic-minded ones assumed positions on our varsity football and basketball teams. Our Day had arrived! Now, on Class Day, with graduation looming ahead, we are filled with sadness at the realization that our high school days are practically over. But we are about to assume greater and more important roles in that impressive drama-life. Let us hope that the past four years, spent in attaining higher education, will not have been spent in vain. 11
