McCIusIcey ....?-..- FGREWORD Since time immemorikll expansion has been the keynote of the rapid changes in the life and living conditions of mankind. Even in our own small community it has not been entirely lacking. Here it is best exemplified by the increasing number of students enroll' ing in the schools, particularly by the growth of Lackawanna High School. Due to the in-crease in enrollment every year, it became necessary to enlarge the high school building by an additional wing. How' ever, in a short time, this too proved inadef quate. The main building could no longer hold the entire student body, so prst the Lin' coln High School Annex and later the Frank' lin High School Annex came into existence. Now, even with our two annexes, conditions are so crowded that a new building has been proposed. - To bring forth more clearly to our readers the rapidity with which Lackawanna High School has expanded, we have made expanf sion the theme of The Lackawannan for nineteen hundred and thirtyfnine. 2 DEDICATION We, the Senior Class of nineteen hundred and thirtyfnine, have endeavored to keep this book abreast of the times. Therefore, it is only fitting that we should dedicate this Lackawannan to a person who has likewise kept pace with an everfchangnig world, to Mrs. Bertha S. Bivins. 3 -li ADMINISTRATION CLARENCE A. APPRECIATION We wish to'devote this space to the ex' pression of our sincere gratitude to all those who have done so much to make this book a success. First, we wish to thank those members- of our staff who have expended so much time and energy that this yearbook might be the success that we feel it is. We appreciate very much the interest which our principal, Mr. Berchmans I. Bo' land, evidenced in the outcome of this Lacka' wannan. To the patrons and advertisers we are like' wise grateful, for without their support the yearbook, as it is now, would have been an impossibility. To one of our fellow seniors, john Nasal, we wish to extend our appreciation for a kindness voluntarily and graciously given. Finally, we bestow our thanks upon the faculty and student body who have so will' ingly cooperated with us in our endeavors. 8 Thi: yearif Senior Clan, the largefi ever, if comprifed of 101 girl: and 85 boyx, totaling 186. This was the phase which lingered in the minds of the Class of '39 on that first day of our high school career when we became freshies. Timidly we surveyed the school structure which was to us a most thrilling sight. Little did we realize that in four years we would be bidding L. H. S. good-bye, perhaps forever. But we did realize that we were about to begin four of the most glorious years of our life. As freshmen, we were, of course, rather meek and went about with a dazed expres- sion on our faces. Everyday brought new insights into high school life. Many of us, overcoming our timidity, began to engage in the various activities which are offered in our school. Those of us who were musically inclined joined either the Band, Orchestra, or Glee Club. Others who had a love for the stage took up dramatics, while others chose debating as their special line of endeavor. Class Day was a most awe-inspiring sight. Our Class Day seemed so far away that we were a little envious of the ludcy Seniors. Returning in September, we realized that we were no longer freshies, but so- phisticated sophomores. We felt more at ease and began taking an active part in school life. The Band, Orchestra, and Glee Club increased in number as more of our class engaged in musical endeavors. A few of our husky lads took part in sports, while others contented themselves with joining some of the various clubs. When we returned for our junior Year, we understood more fully what our task was to be. Because of our closer contact with the seniors, we discovered what was expected of the upper classmen and what standards we were expected to uphold. Al- though our work was becoming more difiicult, we still had time to keep up our interests outside of class and maintain our honor roll standings. In September, 1938 we became high and mighty seniors. Through diligent work, coupled with patience, we had reached our goal. We now were the most envied mem- bers of a great institution. We, as exalted seniors, took the leading roles in school activities. Some of us won important roles in our school plays. Many of us became cfhcers of the various clubs, and the athletic-minded ones assumed positions on our varsity football and basketball teams. Our Day had arrived! Now, on Class Day, with graduation looming ahead, we are filled with sadness at the realization that our high school days are practically over. But we are about to assume greater and more important roles in that impressive drama-life. Let us hope that the past four years, spent in attaining higher education, will not have been spent in vain. 11 ROBERT AMBORSKI Arademic Interclass Basketball 2 Volley Ball 3 Glee Club 5 Glee Club Concert 3 Honor Roll 1 PHYLLIS F. P eter Vezmar Seniors, though we would yet linger under this paternal roof, though our hearts are sad at parting, yet we must say adieu! The four years which we have spent within these walls have been, indeed, happy ones. We have gained everlasting knowledge imparted to us by worthy men and wo- men, excellent teachers. Because of their invaluable help, we are today ready to take our places in this world of ours. However, let us not labor under any illusions. The world will little notice, nor long remember our departure from this institution. Whether or not wo shall carve a niche in this world will depend solely on ourselves. We have the materials and our instruments have been ably sharpened. If we make good use of both, nothing shall remain insurmountable. So, hitch your wagon to a star! Though our reluctance to leave is great, there is a stronger force which drives us forward. Our hearts are burning with supreme ambition. Let our ambition become reality to offer in recompense to our school and faculty as a monument of our everlasting devotion. 31 1 I M 5'-5' , lv W f 3 if ,E awk? All aboard for Senior City! La-ast call! Well, here we are at the last milestone of our journey. Our first stops were Freshman Village, Sophomoretown, and later juniorsville where, despite our seemingly short visit, many of our group had a pleasant time. It is a known fact that this was the largest number ever to have assembled at this particular point since the founding of the organization. Likewise, the individual members seemed greatly advanced in scholastic standing and more eager for activities than visitors of other years. More than fifty of our number sang in the town Glee Club. Brothers Kozera, Butka, Amorowicz, and Iafallo participated in athletics, while Sister O'Hara and Brother Stefan received leading parts in the spring presentation of Skidding. Brother Stefan also won the distinction of being champion ping pong player, while Brother Burns gave of his efforts to attain the honor of sharing the doubles champion- ship. Others engaged prominently in the Band, the Library Club, the Debate Club, the Camera Club, and the French Club. Still others joined their forces with the already organized Commercial Informer and Lackawannan Staffs. Any number of us inscribed our names permanently on the school's honor roll scrolls. Conndentially, considering the success our members have experienced in their previous stops along our journey, we believe that Senior City should hold much in store for us in the way of fun, activities, and added knowledge. 34 SOPHOMORES i ROW 1-Robert McCann, Susan Hudec, Teddy Krause, Jean McGowan, John Hughes, Helen Granica ROW 2-Ted Jaros, Naomi Hooper, Raymond Blohm, Helen Leege, Robert Elvey. Since entering high school, we have seen our school grow, with a second annex, new teachers, and additional classes having been added. We are now emerging from a year of combined work and play, during which time we-have strengthened our physical, mental, and moral beings. While not having taken any notable part in activ- ities during our first year, we have, during this second year, become a dass more interested in the social and extra-curricular life of the school. We feel that our ardor during the past year has made us a class with a dennite purpose and position. 35 - FRESHMEN ROW 1-Gloria Schweichler, Virginia Minich, John Haynal, Eugenia Sobolewski, William Dillon. We shall, however, keep in our fondest memory that day we first entered high school as a group of bewildered students, each one striving to reach his own goal. We soon became accustomed to our surroundings and a great many of us began to take part in extra-curricular activities and to excel in our scholastic endeavors. Altogether the Freshman Class of '39, with its enthusiastic members, shows great promise of being good Sophomores, better juniors, and the best of Seniors. 36 J U N I O R S LINCOLN ANNEX ROW 1-Adeline Niscora, Mary Sreckow, Robert Argenrine, Ann Horbachewski, William McCluslrey. Yolanda Schiavi Bay Robert Argentine William McCluskey Robert Argentine William McCluskey Nick Pilla Ignatius Hanzly john Yelich For three years we have assembled within the ivy-covered walls of our Lincoln Annex, and have experienced here the throes of that great struggle to acquire and to retain the knowledge that has been willingly dispensed by our sometimes solemn, but always helpful, faculty members. Many times as freshmen we lagged along the road that leads to glory, but to us as sophomores came wisdom and foresight and we fought on courageously. Now as juniors we find ourselves greatly attached to this old citadel of learning, the Lincoln Annex, the birthplace and home of our most cherished friend- shipsg the scene of many of our joys and sorrows, academic and social, the cradle of memories which will long be treasured. Yet now we find ourselves about to leave these pleasant associations and to join in spirit and in num- bers with our fellow seniors at the Main Building. So with a tear in our eyes for all the happy little intimacies that we shall miss, but with a smile on our lips for the adventure before us, we quietly pack our belongings and say adieu to the school which has seen us through three important years of our lives. We feel that we shall leave to our successors a tradition of initiative unique in the brief history of our school. Witness the triumph of the Varsity Show and of our junior Day Program-feats in which we take pardonable pride. As we shall never forget our years here at the Annex, so also do we hope that we have made some contribution to our school which will cause the class of 40 to remain a happy memory to those who will succeed us. 37 JUNIOR WILL We, the Junior Class of the Lincoln Annex, feeling the sad time of farewell upon us,.with a tear in one hand and a sigh 'in the other, do hereby relinquish all rights to our possessions which pass on to our successors to have and to hold according to. the new' and the old testament. To the school at large, we bequeath the happy hunting ground on Dona Street, with all its venerable HICHIOIICS. To all the classes we leave the spirit of the Class of '4O. Ca therine Corba Alex Nestoruk Unlike the sophomores of tradition who, elated at having cast off the shackles of the Freshman Year, return to school in arrogant and swaggering anticipation, we came gratefully to greet our old friends and to gird our armor for the skirmishes that lay ahead. We were pleased with our accomplishments, but we were also battlewise. We knew that Latin and French pit alls awaited to snare the unwary traveler and that others of us must fight our way through the jungles of Shorthand and Bookkeeping. But our sipirit was still strong, and we faced the struggle grimly. Oftentimes too the days were brightened an our tasks made lighter by moments of triumph. Witness the names on the honor roll, our part in the Varsity Show, and the glories of the football and basketball teams. In the realm of the Muses too we made our marks. We worked enthusiastically in the Glee Club, the Band, and in the Art classes. Some of our classmates were forced to leave school during the year which may go down in history as the year of the Exodus from Bethlehem Park. Those of us who stayed to finish the struggle can look back, not satisfied, but at least encouraged and with added confidence to meet the challenge of the junior Year. We feel, therefore, in a mood for self-congratulation, but we are not beguiled by our success. We have heard through the grapevine of the vicious tangents of Trigonometry, the sinister plots of Cata- line, and the tangled wilderness of Economics which must still be conquered. But with strong hearts and steady hands we look forward to our junior Year. We have met some of the enemy and they are ours. 39 FRESHMEN l 'i'l LINCOLN ANNEX ROW 1-Stella Rudnicki, Geraldine Igoe, Raymond Brown, Alexandra Lohr, Perfecro Posada. With awe-stricken faces, we were jostled about from room to room of the enormous building. After receiving our instnictions, we were directed to the various class- rooms. The numbers on the doors meant nothing to our dazed eyes as we hurriedly ran from one end of the hall to the other. As the days passed, the strangeness wore off and we soon became acquainted with our surroundings. Now as the end of the school year approaches, we pause to reflect. What have we freshmen achieved since that first bewildering day in September? Not long after we got our bearings, many of us attained high places on the honor roll. Others triumphed in dramatics, athletics, music, art, and other activities. We know now that as a class we are possessed of exceptional talents. As the last days of our freshman year are drawing to a close, we feel that we have acquired several desirable qualities, among them being a certain degree of poise and dependability. Even though we have spent long, tedious hours of study we are thankful for the persistence which en- abled us to reach the goal of our Sophomore Year. We are going to try to persevere in our ambition to become the Good Citizens of tomorrow and to attain one more immediate desire, namely, success in our high school careers. In the midst of such struggles, time passes quickly. Now before we realize it we have emerged from our Freshman Year and are ready to become sophomores with the spirit of good fellowship warm within our hearts. 40 F R E S H M E N rnANKuN ANNEx ROW 1-Paul Empric, Harriet Kolerski, Steve Wierzba, Mary Knapik, Jack Winsick, Florence Woitanik. The people attending this annex are graduates of Washington School and St. Michael's School. There are at present eighty students enrolled in this Annex and they are supervised by three teachers. The -high school classes occupy the third floor of the building. With the enrollment ever-increasing and with no new high school building in sight, it looks very much as if these freshmen will remain at the Franklin School for their sophomore year. Originally the Franklin School grew out of the High School. The year 1938 will 100111 rather dark in the football history of Lackawanna High School, for. the Blue and Gray suffered three defeats in seven games. The team got off to a bad start with two defeats in the first two games, but they redeemed themselves somewhat in the latter part of the season with two startling upsets. Lackawanna was defeated 7 to 0 by the Jamestown Eleven in the opening game at the new mu- nicipal stadium. Their next defeat was suffered at the hands of Trott Vocational School in Niagara Falls. During these two games the boys were out of their usual positions, with Batorski and Kovach in the backfield. This situation continued until the third game of the season against LaSalle, when there was a general shake-up and Coach Bukaty returned Batorski and Kovach to their regular positions. In this game the team snapped out of their slump and defeated the LaSalle gridders 32 to 12. This win was followed by a startling upset of 25 to 12 over our arch-rival Tonawanda. This winning streak lasted through the Dunkirk and Niagara Falls games. The score of these last two games were 12 to O and 12 to O, respectively. The winning streak, however, ended abruptly in the rinal game of the season when North Tona- wanda decisively defeated the local huskies by a score of 25 to 0. After it was all over and the smoke had cleared away, Lackawanna found itself in a two-way deadlock for second place, with four wins and three losses. This record, for any school other than Lackawanna High School, might have been well-nigh excellent, but for Lackawanna, the champions of last year, it is merely good. 56 BASKETBALL -il I ROW 1-Lawrence Conte. forward: Oliver Dabney, forward, Harold Madar, guard: Anelio lafallo, cenrerg John Batorslri, forward: Archie Ordecha, guard, Brownie jams, manager. Brilliant playing by a brilliant team put hckawanna in first place in the league, in the play-offs, and in the opinions of the oilicials. The Lackawanna Cagers of 1959 played a sensationa season with fifteen wins and one defeat, to gain undisputed possession of first place in the St. Lawrence League. This put them in the play-OES through which they glided, never seriously threatened by even their worst rivals, Tonawanda and Niagara Falls. The team was built around a nucleus of four veterans, with the tifth position being capably filled by Archie Ordecha. The team work and the individual style of the players was of the highest caliber. Coach Bukaty is to be congratulated on an outstanding squad. The reserves, although ladc- ing in experience, likewise played ball of which Mr. Novak can well be proud. By finishing in first place in the league, the team had claim to one trophy, by winning the play- offs, the team had claim to another trophyg by being good sports, the team had claim to still another trophy. Ladcawanna won three honors, but received onl two trophies because of a league rule which prohibits one team from receiving both the hrst place and, the play-off awards. The Blue and Gray were presented with the first place tribute as champions of the St. Lawrence League, and at the same time they were also awarded the Sportsmanship Trophy. Lackawanna's 1959 basketball season was as successful a one as could have been desired. No other team in the league has ever won all three honors in the same year. To the team, to the coach, and to the school, may all your endeavors be as successful as the basketball season of '39! 57 CHEERLEADERS Esther Gzyl Lillian Bala Esther Kaznowski PING PONG Singles Peter Gawronski, Champion John Stefan, Rmmner-up Doubles Peter Gawronski and Alfred Szelewski, Champions Robert Burns and Oliver Dabney, Runners-up ROW 1-Robert Bums, Peter Gawronski, Alfred Sze- lewski.
