Chaplain Corps, U.S. Navy. Known to most simply as Father Jake , he devoted his life to the service of God, Country and the Navy. A football star and National Championship Lacrosse All-American, Laboon graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy as a member of the class of 1944. Assigned to the submarine USS PETO CSS 2655, Laboon. a Lieutenant Junior Crrade at the time, was awarded the Silver Star for bravery after diving from his moving submarine to rescue a downed aviator under heavy enemy fire. At the end of World War ll, Lieutenant Laboon left the Navy to become a Jesuit priest. In 1958, Father Laboon returned to the Navy he loved as a member of the Chaplain Corps. Over the next 21 years, he served in virtually every branch of the Navy and Marine Corps. His assignments included tours in Alaska, Hawaii, Japan and Vietnam. As a Chaplain with the Marines in Vietnam, Father Laboon earned a Legion of Merit with Combat In addition to his heroic service in two wars, Father Laboon became the first chaplain for the Polaris Submarine Program and later became the Senior Chaplain at the Naval Academy. The Naval Academy has honored Father Laboon by renaming the Chaplains Center in his honor. When he retired in 1979, Captain Laboon was the Fleet Chaplain, Atlantic Fleet. After his retirement, Father Laboon returned to Annapolis as the house manager of the Jesuit retreat facility, Manresa-on-Severn. His final tour of duty was as pastor of St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Church in Woodstock, Maryland. Upon his passing in 1988, Father Jake left behind countless service members and their families whose lives he had touched with compassion and understanding. His courage and genuine interest -81 concern for all his shipmates was then, is now, and will forever remain an extraordinary example for Sailors and Marines everywhere. McFarland Commanding Officer USS LABOON CDDG 585 Born in El Paso, Texas, and raised all over the world as the son of an Army Senior Enlisted Soldier, Commander McFarland is a 1989 graduate of the University of New Mexico, from which he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering and earned his commission through the NROTC program. Commander McFarland's initial sea tour was on the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY CCV 675 as the Electric Division Officer, 3rd Division Officer and Assistant First LT. His second Division Officer tour was on the USS LABOON CDDG 585, where he served as the Commissioned Combat Information Officer CCICO5. After graduating from Department Head School, he served as Weapons Officer and Combat Systems Officer on the USS MOBILE BAY CCG 585, forward deployed in Yokosuka, Japan. Most recently, Commander McFarland served as Executive Officer on the USS BULKELEY CDDG 845. Commander McFarland's shore duty allowed him to attend the Naval War College and the Naval Operational Planners Curriculum CNOPC5 in Newport, Rhode Island, where he also earned a Master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies, specializing as a Joint Operational Planner. Commander McFarland also attended the Joint Force Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia. He served at the Pentagon on the OPNAV Staff in the Navy Programming Division CN 805 as the Lead Programmer for Shipbuilding and Surface Warfare Programs. Most recently, Commander McFarland served on the Joint Staff in the Program Budget Analysis Division CPBAD5 as a Defense Resource Manager assigned to the Force Structure, Resources and Assessment Directorate J-8. Commander McParland's personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Medal, the Navy Meritorious Medal, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal Cthree gold stars5, and the Navy Achievement Medal Cthree gold stars5, as well as multiple campaign, unit and service awards. bran 'rrr up n David's Tomb rx- 3 Commander Donald J. Donegan Commanding Officer USS LABOON CDDG 585 i Commander Donegan, a native of Hagerstown, MD, graduated with merit from the United States Naval Academy in 1992 with a Bachelor of Science degree in History. He is also a graduate of the American Military University with a Master of Arts degree in Military Studies CNaval War'fare5. He is currently designated as the Prospective Commanding Officer, USS F . y r ,I , n LABOON DDG 585 Commander Donegan earned his Surface Vt artare qualificatio while serving as Combat Information Center I CIC 5 Officer in USS STUMP CDD 9785. For his first shore tour. he returned to the Naval Academy as an instructor in the Department of Seamansliip and Navigation. Commander Done gan then reported to USS PAUL F. FOSTER CDD 9645 as Operations Officer in October 2000. Upon completion of his first Department Head tour, Commander Done gan reported to the staff of Commander, Destroyer Squadron NINE in Everett, WA and deployed to the Western Pacitic embarked in USS CARL VINSON CCVN 705. While on deployment, Commander Donegan transferred to the staff of Commander, Carrier Group THREE Calso embarked in CARL VINSON5 as the Surface Strike Operations Officer. He detached from the CCG3 Staff and reported to USS TRENTON LLPD 145 as Executive Officer. While onboard TRENTON, Commander Donegan participated in the Non-Combatant Evacuation Operation from Beirut, Lebanon in July 2006. Commander Donegan most recently served on The Joint Staff as a Military Education Policy Planner in the Operational Plans and Joint Force Development Directorate QJ-75. Russell Executive Officer Uss LABooN tooo 5s5 Commander Jonathan C. Russell, a native of Okemos Michigan, is a 1993 graduate of the United States Naval , Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography. Commander Russell has served in a number of shipboard and shore assignments. From November 1995 to December 1997, he served on USS Thach CFFG 435 as the Electrical Officer and Combat Information Center Officer. Onboard Thach, homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, he deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of the United Nations sanctions against Iraq. From February 1998 to September 1999, Commander Russell served in USS O,Brien CDD 9755, also homeported in Japan, as the Main Propulsion Assistant. From 1999 to 2001 he was an instructor at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, RI, teaching physics to prospective Coast Guard and Naval Academy Midshipmen. Upon his graduation from Surnrnerx ille High School in l98l, he enlisted following in his fathers footstep and reported for Recruit Training in December 1981 in Orlando. Fl. After completing Basic training, Electronics 'A' and C schools, he reported to his first ship, USS BOWEN I FF H179 in July 1983 stationed in Charleston, SC.
