The Main Building houses the administrative offices, library, cafeteria, heating plant, home- making, and printing departments, in addition to the usual traditional classrooms. The lower picture on the preceding page shows the new building. Completed in 1941 at a cost of 2'6100,000, it is the largest new building on the campus. Even today not many of the high schools in the Middle-west have an organized program in which an entire teaching staff shares in the counseling and guiding of the boys and girls and in helping them to plan their work toward a happy and successful future. This school tries to help each student early in his high school planning to be- come aware of his own strength and weaknesses and to more wisely select a pro- gram of study for his four years. Through interviews, tests, home-visits, and indi- vidual counseling, the interests, needs, and background of each student are learned and teachers can thus work more wisely to help the student in his planning. The guidance department attempts to become a coordinating agency with the parents, the faculty, the student, and the housemother to better serve the youth that their experiences here may be rich and helpful. During the summer Mr. Harrison, Miss Grow, and many members of the faculty make visits to the homes of the students in the interest of the boys and girls with whom they work during the school year. if 4501 'Fg!.,'n lllllIliiii::E ,gc-1 zakum wut is IEQQ. r my main -xiii 3...-.tx 'll I Q mf? M,-i..' ,-..zv.,, -, ' - . ' in - joofdaff The LCCHS Grizzlies finished their second consecutive undefeated and untied season to run their undefeated string to thirty games. The Bears have been unbeaten the last four years to give the present seniors the distinction of never seeing LC lose a football game while they have been in high school. ln the past seven years LCCHS has won 47, tied three and lost one football game. In the season curtain raiser at Altamont, LC whipped Neodesha 19-0, Vic Chrisman scored two touchdowns and Milton Lowmaster added another to complete the Grizzly scoring. A week later the Grizzles drubbed the Lamar, Missouri, Tigers 24-0 at Lamar. Milton Lowmaster had a field night as he tallied three touchdowns and passed to Dan Hagan for another score. LC's third win came when they edged the Fort Scott Tigers 19-14 in a real thriller on the latter's home gridiron. Altamont scored two touchdowns in the first half and looked as though they were going to make a runaway of the game. But the strong Tigers rallied in the half and scored 14 points. With time beginning to run out halfback Vic Chris- man picked up a Tiger fumble and raced for the winning touchdown. Floyd Crain and Dan Hagan scored the touch- down's 6-pointers. At Caney the next week the Grizzlies surged from a 7-0 first half lead to win going away 27-6. Floyd Crain, Lowmaster, Chrisman and Max Murphy tallied LC's touch- downs. In the closest contest of the campaign the Bears slipped by the Chanute Comets 7-6 at Chanute. After threatening the score several times LC tallied on a pass from Darrei Frogley to Milt Lowmaster in the second period. After the touchdown Bill Barnett kicked what proved to be the win- ning point. After a two-week layoff the Grizzlies made a dismal showing before a large homecoming crowd in downing the Baxter Springs Lions 13-0. After only nine plays Floyd Crain scored for LC. Lowmaster tallied the other touch- down on an intercepted pass. The Lions' 19 passes of a record 52 attempted in the below freezing weather. Playing by far the best game of the season the Grizzlies swamped Wyandotte, Oklahoma, 32-0 at Altamont, in the final contest of the season. Lowmaster scored three times and Floyd Crain and Dan Hagan one touchdown each. Hagan's touchdown came on a pass from Chrisman. In seven games the Grizzlies scored 141 points to their opponents' 26. Darrel Frogley and Jim Williams were elected co-cap- tains or the team at the beginning of the season. Eighteen seniors, along with twelve underclassmen, were awarded letters. Senior lettermen are: Duane Hoy, Milton Lowmaster, Jim Williams, Milburn Rexwinkle, Cleon Black- burn, Lew Wamsley, Dan Hagan, Bill Barnett, Vic Chris- man, Darrel Frogley, regularsg Marvin Rexwinkle, Don Fish, Jack Foreman, Keith Graver, Forrest Powers, Denzil Rutt- gen, Ralph Lansdowne and Duane Miksch. The Bears won their first seven- teen gumes of the season to go into regional tournament play as the only unbeaten AA basketball team in Kansas. LC lost their last two games for a 17-2 record. After beating Chanute for a trip to the state tourna- ment at Emporia, LC ran into a bad night and was defeated by Coffeyville in finals of the regional. At Emporia the Grizzlies played the state champions to be. Wichita East. The Altamont athletes possessed the finest defensive record among large schools in Kansas and proved it as they held East to a 44-35 win. For Wichita, who had a 65.5 game average, this was the closest game of the tour- nament. During the Christmas holidays LCCHS won the Cherry- vale Invitational Tournament at Cherryvale to give them a first and second place trophy for the year. The team was led in scoring by co-captains Milton Low- master and Danny Hagan with 13.5 and 12.5 point averages respectively. As a whole the team scored 847 points for a 44.5 average as against their opponents' 625 or 32.9 average. The freshman basketball team shoved lots of promise in winning seven of thirteen games. After a slow start Coach Chester Crosetto's Cagers came along fast near the end of the season. Eight seniors were awarded letters. They are Milton Lowmaster, Dan Hagan, Vic Chrisman, Darrell Frogley, Bill Barnett, regularsg Max Green, Lewis Wamsley and Duane Hoy. Underclassmen who lettered are: Leo Bowman, Arvon Phillips, Bob Young, Harold Herron, and Dale Higginson.
