Whereas the basic editorial policies ot the paper remain unchanged, several inno- vations marked the i954-55 publication year. A new column to find a great deal ot favor was Velma Gewicke-y's Alumnotes. Beth Berkenmeier cleverly compiled an ex- changed column headed Much Ado About Nothing. A special feature was a series ot pre-CAROUSEL features by .lim Fultz. In addition to their regular sport page chores, Doug Lee and Jerry Overby com- bined to edit and publish Viking and Cardinal basketball publicity brochures. Several commercial newspapers made favorable remarks about the booklets. As usual, Bill Sprenger must receive heartfelt thanks for his work in the darkroom and photo lab. Bill's willingness to work with the staff made the picture taking task a pleasure. As the ParKan goes to press, plans are underway tor the second annual Journalism trip. Kansas City or Tulsa are the proposed cities tor the journalists visit this year. From the very beginning, the staff had ideas to improve the yearbook. In oddi- tion to the King and Queen of the ParKan selection by Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, this, in the estimation of the staff, is the first ParKan to use color extensively, Other innovations are the added pages- total number of pages this year is 96 in- stead of the usual 88-the title page by .ei-ff Bibler, and the Queen Portfolio section. .,,, ' Second semester ParKan members, left to right: Dave Black- burn, Ed Sandritter, and Gene Farran. THE BUSINESS STAFF A new set-up for the ParKan staff was the School Publications class which met twice weekly during the first semester and three times weekly during the second semester. It was in this class that ParKan work was done. Thus, rather than irreg- ular staff meetings, the group was able to meet on a regular schedule, which al- lowed for more thorough and detailed work. Much of the credit for the beauty of the ParKan you now hold in your hand must go to Phyllis Smith, the Art Editor. Her ideas and concepts aided greatly in mak- ing this Hthe best ParKan ever, Our thanks must go to Mr, Jack Grib- ben of Sun Engraving, Mr. Mark Griggs and Mr, Elmer Columbia, Jr., of Com- mercial Publishers, and Mr. Don Peterson of Peterson Studios for their help, pa- tience, and assistance, From left to right: Jerry Overby, Susie Cooper, Louise Frame, Gary Ireland, Sandy Dye cmd Dick Sengpiehl. 7 'Wf fYWt' f 22125-fM1MsiA4eWwn4f:syv1 ' W m.,vmM,.,,N Wm.......Wwf'ff , 1 f W if:-ww rf' Jim. 7955 pm gm This year PJC boasted one ot the largest and loudest Pep Clubs in the school's history. Over 150 PJC-ers ioined the Pep Club to cheer the Vikings and Cardinals on to victory on the gridiron and the hardboards. As in the past, the organization was headed by the Pep Council, pictured on the facing page. One of the features of the Pep Club this year was the Pep Band, an organ- ization of llth and 'l2th grade boys who banded together to cheer the Viking hoopsters on to victory. While the band didn't get started until second semester, their support was enthusiastic and followed the cagers right through to the State tournament at Manhattan. 6' There is no doubt that a cheering section is only as good as the cheer- leaders. And the i955 Cardinal cheer- leaders were tops. ln addition to add- ing new yells, the girls sparked Card- inal cheering sections to bigger and better yells. Pictured from left to right: Audrey Gray, Jackie Richmire, Carolyn Chap- man, Sena Jensen, and Jane Hoising- ton. H0146 What with State and Regional tourna- ments facing the Vikings, the cheerleaders had a busy basketball season. l-lere, too, we have a group of girls who worked long and hard to get the support every team needs. The Viking cheerleaders were especially active in adding new yells to the cheering section list. Pictured from left to right: Roberta Har- low, Carol Sue Ellis, Don Bolander, Marlene Olmstead, and Lu Turley. jim Map, fn nr,iL Although pep is a spontaneous expression of student support, it takes organization and planning to be fully effective. lt is here that the Pep Council steps in to chan- nel the activities ofthe Cheerleaders and the Pep Club. One of the most important functions of the group is the scheduling of pep assemblies. The officers of the Pep Council also act as the executives for the Pep Club. The Council is made up of three students from the lower division and three students from the upper division. This year saw a change in faculty sponsors as Mr. l-larold Johnson, Viking basketball coach, stepped into the job. , Council officers are: Bill Ledbetter, presidentg Jane Hoisington, vice president, and Jackie Richmire, secre- tary-treasurer. The Cardinals, under head Coach Wally Swanson and line Coach Ralph Onion, proved they could put up a good battle as they held up under the terrific bombardments of their op- ponents, Throughout the season, the Birds fought hard to shake off the jinx, but to no avail. The Vikes, expecting to lose by two touchdowns, rolled over Cherryvale 39-O in the season opener. The Vikings proved the first game was no accident as they passed to a 21-6 victory over Iola. The Vikes dropped their encounter with the Coffeyville Golden Tornadoes 32-O. lt was a hard fought battle but the Vikings couldn't seern to get rolling. The Vikings homecoming was spoiled as they lost a heartbreaker to lndependence 32-13, One Vike touchdown was called back, The Vikes lost another encounter to a big, hard-charging Joplin eleven 33-14. The Vikings then met the number one team in the state, Pittsburg. The score stood 6-O at the end of the first half but the Vike defense let down and the final tabu- lation read 34-O. Coach Wally Swanson's crew ran up against some tough competition in the Eastern Division but the Cardinals gave every game everything they had. Singled out for special glory on the Cardinal squad is Webster Gaylord, a 6'4 freshman, who compiled the best scoring average with a l6.9 points per game. This was good enough to cop fourth place in the Eastern Division scoring. Gaylord also placed first on the all-con- ference five. At the tournament held in Parsons, Webster was selected for the first five of the All-Tourney team, Also given special recognition for their fine all-around playing throughout the tourna- ment were Sonny Laskey and Lorne Schlatter. Perhaps the most notable game played all year by the Birds came in the tourney held in the Queen City. Parsons almost upset the Division champs and favorites of the contest, the Coffeyville Red Ravens. The hard-driving Cardinal quintet lost in the last 30 seconds, 53-50, Coffeyville took home first place by downing Independence in the finals. Co-captains of the i954-i955 Cardinals were Dwayne Daniels and Webster Gaylord. The Champs High on the list of outstanding basketball coaches is Viking coach l-larold Johnson who guided his small but spirited team into the state tournament at Manhattan. Nothing but words of praise were received for the fighting Viking squad. The team lacked height and in this respect was the smallest since Johnson took over the reign of Viking basket- ball. The Vikes had a record of i5 wins and 7 losses, highlighted by the three defeats of the Coffeyville Golden Tornado by the Norsemen. ln the regional tournament at Pittsburg, senior Fred Strathe tallied Sl points in a single game to set new scoring records. Fred received many honors this season as he was unanimously placed on the all-SEK basketball team and was selected for the first tournament team at the state tournament. The highest honor for Fred was his selection as a member of the All-State team. Sharing the honors for fine all round playing was Bill Guthridge, selected for the second five-all-tourney and second five All-State. Bill served as the season play maker and sent both games at the state tournament into overtimes in the fading seconds with field goals. Fine all-round team play sent this willing and alert team through a successful year. As assistant coach Max Schiefelbusch would say, They are a wonderful bunch of boys. Viking B Squad The i954-55 season was another excellent one for the Parsons Viking B squad. Under the leadership of Coach Max Schiefelbusch, the squad finished with a sea- son average of l5 wins against three defeats. The Viking Juniors will certainly provide Viking Coach l-larold Johnson with a great deal of fine material for next year's first team. In addition to playing other B squads, the second team provides Coach Johnson with strong reserve strength for his A contests. Cardinal Thinclads The college track squad was small this year and lacked well-rounded competition in both track and field events. There were some strong individuals, especially in the dashes and mile run. Special mention should go to Bill Wheat who placed in the top division ot college dashers and Ed Blurton, likewise. Rolland Elliot showed great promise in the mile run, The coach was Wallace Swanson, Here is the schedule ct the I954-55 season: April 4 KSTC at Pittsburg Invitational KB squadl April I4 Cotteyville Invitational April 20 Independence Invitational April 23 K. Intramural Girls Champs As is the custom at PJC, each basketball season is marked by an extensive and intensive intramural basketball tournament. Pictured above are the girls who made up the top team in their division for the 1955 season. The girls all played excellent basketball and downed their competition by comfortable margins. The general intramural program is aimed at giving the all students the oppor- tunity to participate in school sports. The program is under the co-direction of Mr. Charles Foiles and Mrs. Pauline Bracken.
