After the freshmen had been initiated properly into the mysteries of college life, they gave evidence of their great sagacity by choosing as class officers llfr. Fred Randall, presidentg Miss Gladys Sullivan, vice-president: fMiss Mildred Cunningham, secretary-treasurerg and Mr. VVilliam Van llleter and Mr. Ralph Coad as student council representatives. Miss Gladys Sullivan ruled the freshman class as annual queen. The second year only sixty-six of the last years number came back for the second year of college. After impressing the freshman class with their superiority in a picnic initiation, the class turned their minds to more serious things in ,choosing Mr. Fred Fordemwalt and Miss Margaret Smith as class sponsors. Mr. Ralph Coad was chosen presi- dent of tl1e student body and ltliss Gladys Sullivan and Mr. John Rever were elected to the student council. The class officers for the sophomore year were as follows: president, Mr. William Van Meter, vice-president, Miss Helen Smayg and secretary-treasurer, Miss Mild- red Cunningham. From Class P resident Raymond Campbell Vice President Trula Mae Rule Secretary-Treasurer Chester Pyle the very first assembly, through the woeful days of initiation, to the trials of spring finals, the 115 loyal students worked together to make the 1928-29 Freshies a memorable class. Their honors and achieve- ments are many but their college spirit was their distinction. Buying the P. J. C. armbands was the first call for loyalty and the Freshies responded immediately. Then they came to the games to root with all their might, and gave of their best material to make these teams. At least seven or eight of them played notably on our Kansas Champion- ship Football Team. But their pluck was not all on the gridiron. Over half of that boys pep club--those S. O. S.'s, so full of vim and ideas, were fresh- men members. Perhaps one of the times when the freshmen showed the most spirit and good sportsmanship was when they were enduring initiation. They had worlds of fun evading their rules but took their medicine manfully if they were caught. It was worth the agony of wearing clothes backwards, and using no rouge or powder to attain the dignity of noble freshmen. Remember how they pulled the sophomores into the creek in the tug-0-war at the college picnic during hazing week? And although it was never decided who won the mud-slinging contest, the fresh girlies gave their upperclassmates some pretty dirty faces. And what freshmen didn't want to wear those clever caps? Red and white for P. J. C. and green for first-year intelligence. And later in the year their class spirit went to work and made a big showing on College Work Day. They gladly did their part to finance the annual. Naturally such a class must have had capable, popular leaders. At their first meeting Raymond Campbell was chosen president, with Trula lilac Rule acting as Vice President. For Secretary-Treasurer they elected Chester Pyle. The Freshmen of '28 and '29 had much dramatic talent in their class. The college representative at the Arkansas City Declamation Contest was Mildred Jarboe, a Freshmen. In the all-college play Craig's Wife a freshman boy had one lead and a Freshman girl had a second lead. Altogether there were four representatives of this class in the play. Also in debate two Freshmen starred. Margaret Craig and Don Stallings were members of Parsons' undefeated debate teams. This class has members from eight different towns: Altamont, Os- wego, Service, Labette, Excelsior Springs, Mo., Harrisonville, Mo., and Parsons. But a class cannot go along smoothly and accomplish much unless they have the best kind of sponsors. So let it be considered that the good reputation of the Freshmen Class has been to a great extent due to their sponsors, Miss Lorene Bailey and Mr. lvallace Guthridge. rw-av-n-w-.-:sw-qnyipff-e.p-:feng-f-cwfnivs-N---fr-4-If-,-fy--.-1-L-.-.,..,-... .... .,... .,f. -f-----w.'-V-41'----.qva ' ' ' : f,5.'..:sq.,p,J.3 Q.v:M.5i:,,'.f,5.:1.,.-.Wg.:,:.,:!lJ:'A....kli . 4 .-., 1,,.' , ,I A-1 ,4 .- - .- M - 5 1 any 1 A. ,H .f.-E4-,iii-lei 1'1:9-1-1-9- gg.,-,gg.j:,.., . -7 55'-ff-' 41..- .LL -1.2-JL.,.al.,lfaffa1L...g..3..ibLsa35eL:L,J1:ld-eau.- -.,.,.....,. ,.i.zL2,J..Q.1:f.. 4,:,.:..: .Jr f2f,a.:.: - ..Lz.s...::7..-..L11-2'i::.-:az -,.. -I - V - Baity Carr Cribbet Douglas Finical Baker Cook Davis Dumm Geln'ing,, Bamberry Coons De Smidt Duncon Hrlrumoncl Campbell Craig Dial Elliot Hanna Campbell Craven Dixon Evans Harris uf nv-rf,.v-h. George Wells, coach and athletic director, came to Parsons this year with a most enviable reputation established through his years of football with Independence high school and Kansas State Teachers College at Pittsburg as well as his earlier coaching of Parsons teams C1921-192411, Chanute, Kansas, and Iowa City, Iowa. WVith coach Wells, the development- of sterling character and virile manhood is the primary task of the athletic department. His one year at Parsons has been a big step toward the installation of this mark of present day coaching here, and it is with a feeling of sincere regret that the admin-- istration, faculty, and students see him leave. Assistant coach Harold Bailey,' Ricketts has closed his first year as coach of P. J. C. Although this is his first year as a faculty member, he has been known to us in the past as a student. Bailey is a product of Parsons Junior College. He entered Baker University in 1926 and later attended the University of Illinois. As Bailey Rick- etts was a favorite as a student in 1926, so is he a favorite as a coach in 1929. Miss Josephine Lee, sophomore, and Mr. John Reeves, freshman, were chosen by the student body of the junior college to be tl1e two persons to instill pep and enthusiasm into the teams and rooters of all activities. Both Miss Lee and Mr. Reeves had held similiar honors while in high school. They were loyal to their school and classmates and help- ed Parsons Junior College 'to win many victories. Josephine and John were active members and boosters of all ac- tivities. Not only their school but the towns-people as well are proud of the way our yell leaders created good will and fellowship among all those who participated in the activities. Penny displayed a wonderful game of football not in one but all of the games. He played left end. Another good, football man is Frank Waits, freshman. Frank played last season for P. H. S.. He has one more year in junior college. Maurice Douglass, freshman, was on the squad for P. J. C. his first year. Maurice, perhaps, gets his football from brother Eddie. Craig's Wife The college play, Craig's YVife, was a more serious drama than those of previous years and it caused the audience to sit and think a little after the curtains closed. Miss Gladys Sullivan, carried the title role of the selfish wife whose passion for a beautiful house excluded her husband from her calculations as an important member of her household and Raymond Campbell played the part of the husband whose mind worked slowly but thoroughly in discovering his wife's schemes against his happiness. Miss Courtney McGregor was the observant aunt who exposed Mrs. Craig's character to her nephew to save his happiness. The self- asserting housekeeper, Miss Evelyn Carter, and the pert maid, Miss Margaret Craig, lightened the play with their humorous scenes when the action threatened to become too intense. Clifford Kelly attracted favorable notice as the friend of Craig. Miss Mildred Jarboe, as Mrs. Craig's niece and Tommy Conroy, as her fiance added the love interest to the play. Two very successful gentle- men detectives, who had neither wide feet, checked suits, nor big black cigars were Herbert James and Fred Naff. Miss Genevieve Bero made a very sympathetic if a 'too loquacious neighbor lady. .. Supporting staff included: Adelbert Willsie, stage manager, Chester Pyle, property manager, Trula Mae Rule, prompter, W'illiam Van Meter, business manager, and Le Roy James, advertising manager. Col1egians One of the most popular organizations of the Junior College was the male quartet. It was the most popular singing group in Parsons. The quartet was organized three years ago, and scarcely a week passes when they are not engaged to sing at Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club and Rotary Club luncheons, Church Services, and Banquets, high school and junior college assemblies, basket ball games or some out of town engagements. They have become known to the radio world through KVOO of Tulsa and KGGF of Pitcher. The Collegians are: Loren Hinchcliff, tenor, Thomas Conroy, second tenor, Howard Van Dyne, baritone, Raymond Campbell, basso.
