Vf artha Johnson We dedicate the 1972- Treasure Chest to Mrs. Martha johnson. Her devotion to her students is unlimited and vise versa. La Vega has been fortu- nate to have Mrs. johnson for fourteen years as a student and teacher. The juniors are lucky to have her as a sponser. She graduated from Bay- lor in 1961 with a major in English and a minor in Spanish. Many students have said Mrs. johnson is quiet and easy-going, but most of all under- standing. For these reasons we dedicate the Treasure Chest to her. 5535 Table of Contents Activities 3 ss af Faculty-Administration 43 Honors 55 ir. Organizations 69 Athletics T 101 52? Classes 125 .. B-Team cheerlead- ers Liz Lozano, Sarah Upmore, Paula Harris and Rebecca Adams helped out at varsity games and assemblies. --W., 8 il , W fy ff' ikif. American Showcase The Young American Showcase visited La Vega Sept. 21 for a loud and lively assembly. The organist, King Fish, was from St. Louis, Mo., guitarist Rocky was from Witchita, Kan., and drummer, Lance, was from Los Angelos. The band played popular music and per- formed a comedy skit on how to effective sell pencils on a street corner. Sharp shooters tried their luck on Pilgrim and Indian Day. Table decorations were furnished by the drill team. 16 Football Banquet The 1971 Football Banquet was a smashing success. Special guests were board members, faculty, and Larry Hickman. Mr. Hickman was the banquet's speaker, with much experience as a football player. Drill team girls were responsible for decorations, with the theme as Fire and Rain. An award was presented to Becky Adams, for being an A-team cheerleader. All of the cheerleader and drill team girls were introduced. Valerie Browing and Patty jordan were presented blankets for their devo- tion to the drill team. The most in- portant awards, given to three out- standing players, were announced by head coach, Bob Byerly. The best back was Beasley Reece, best lineman was David Breeland, and most conscientious was Dale Dug- gan. These boys were chosen on their athletic ability, their overall output, and their leadership ability. The other football players were in- troduced by each coach. These Pi- rates were presented with jackets or plaques. Congratulations to all. 17 The first two weeks of February were busy, for the National Honor Society members. Shirley Hand was chairman of the Val-o-Cram project, with the help of Mark Par- sons and Brenda Spikes. Each NHS member sold Val-o-Grams at 25 cents for one week. Flowers, songs, poems, candy, and kisses were given as gifts to that special someone. Cupid Strikes The Heart Cupid and Lady Love try to solve the many disagrements that couples seem to have, durin the school year. 19 Q90 i i .,-7 4'-f + The faculty, of the high school, challenged the junior high in bas- ketball and volleyball games. The thrills and chills were over-pow- ering to the audience as well as the players. Mrs. Adcock, Mrs. Hinton and Mrs. Dodson showed spirit, plus ability. Mr. jones and Mr. Sheppard were standouts among the games. The purpose of the games were to raise scholarship money for deserving graduates. During the 1971-72 school year, a team of karate students and their expen, Duffy, came to demon- strate the art and power of karate. Duffy, a black belt in karate, has been an instructor at Baylor, MCC, and TSTI. He is one of the best in Waco and probably throughout Texas. The group started out by showing their warm-up exercises, while counting in japanese. Then the serious action began, and the students went wild. Boards were broken in single, double, and tripple thicknesses, with the help of Duffy. A handful of La Vega stu- dents have taken instructions con- cerning the art of karate. Sitting, climbing, standing or what- ever, everybody got into the painting brigade before the year was out. Few rooms remained that weren't cheered up by a coat of paint. Beginning with D.E. rooms and mi- grating up and down the halls, the painting bug hit most everyone. Pastel shades of yellow, blue-but no sickly green-were seen. Mrs. Dietiker probably would win the award for the brightest color com- bination-yellow with alternate stripes of brown, green and orange. Mrs. johnson ran a close second on brightness with yellow and green. Volunteers painted the halls blue and gave a fresh off-white coat to the lunchroom. The art classes added murals and a pirate head to the walls of the lunchroom. 24 fig-ii? 4 J '91 Qiilfjii E i.:tsfr.w f i HS -A r assi ai-iiwflez wfaisxfw my wg, fgzgsasg ffmesf- ref Paint, and More Paint ftop photosj , . . On April 28, the La Vega gym was filled with en- thusiasm and question. Spirit was shown by both teams, but as the game went on, the two classes be- gan to clash. Cynthia Dunn stood out among all the junior girls, be- cause of her athletic ability. Three fantastic girls for the senior class were Francis Mc Cauley, Shirley Hand, and Valerie Browning. The final score was Seniors 32-luniors 29. As the senior cheerleaders take a break, Ricky Lowe becomes the center attrac- tion. How 'about a date, sweetie? 29 The Powder-puff game was a first for the juniors and a last for the seniors. It brought smiles and tears along with good and bad memories. 30 'D K N-J ,ff 'US The senior class of 1972 pulled off what may well be the greatest achievement ever by students of La Vega High School. The Ebony Blade, a semi-musical written by Boyd Barrett and Ricky Lowe, raked in well over six hundred dol- lars for the class. The talented cast sparkled both nights in front of packed audiences. The beautifully written score was done by David Woodliff, Thomas Clough, and Beasley Reece. The Ebony Blade Under the direction of its writers, the senior play was coming along well, but not well enough. And then. . . and then . . . along came jones. To the cast and to the entire senior class, The Ebony Blade will always hold some very fond memories. To future classes, it will always be a goal for achievement. To La Vega, it will forever stand as a monument of success and triumph. 33 That was a very good trick. Now tell me, how did you raise yourself off the ground? Maybe a lepr- echaun was there. 34 'ying Through i s l' 5 5 Who would involve themselves in a killing expedition? Not I, said the pie. Anyway, Mr. Sheppard hunted for willing souls to participate. He started with a hand- ful, but the number gradually increased to twenty. For two solid weeks, they practiced during study halls, af- ter school and in their front yards. Dale Duggan and Ricky Connor were the two hams. Debbie Caller, Dale Williams and Boyd Barrett showed their ability with great pride. What can be said about lerry Smith? All in all, the assembly was quite enjoyable for students and teachers. Really Boyd, every- one agreed that the beard looked fan- tastic, but a ponytail? 36 41- ffgpi gi 'F -. ,A sv' 7 X 3' .-55' N 1 . -'V l .Y 4 ' , - ' ' 5 Af W ski ' ' Wg J . The Pirates are losing thirteen seniors to graduation, ten of which were starters. So next year will see much experience and the return of ex- cellent coaching staff that has lead the Pirates through the past few years. The Pirates return to the 9- AAA district for the 72-73 season and many old rivals will once again become rivals.
