Pirates Place Third ,. fi.: ,g ,k , - ,XF 1 Ali i 4' 5 ,L Q, Eggs Tommy Ellis Pat Railsback La Vega came out third in the 1970 district play. It was the first year since 1966 that La Vega has placed in district play. Both times were under the coaching of Jack Sheppard. Leading scorer for the season was Doug Bates. He scored 548 points this season, making a total of 1,260 points for a three-year varsity career. Doug also was an all-district player for two years. He was all-tournament player at Lam- pasas and La Vega this year. Leading rebounder for the year was Tommy Wills. Tommy had 470 rebounds making a total of 920 rebounds for his two-year varsity record. Tommy was all-tour- nament player at La Vega. Sammy Holland was second team all-district as well as team captain. He has played two years on the varsity. Captains for the 70 season were seniors Doug Bates and David Helton, and junior Sammy Holland.The team brought home three trophies during the season: Consolation at Brenham, Second place at Lampasas, and First place at La Vega. 3 if X Otis Gowan Tommy Wills Sammy Holland 113
