J X xj M J ' Qjpwxmk, , .f X v w 1 1 Z X 1970 TREASURE CHEST La Vega High School LIBRA: General tendencies of this sign show Mrs. Arlene West to be a warm person who shows re- spect for others. She is helpful, conscientious, ac- curate, and keen-eyed. Enthusiasm is the domi- nant trait under this sign, and justice strongly rules all judgments made by a Libra. Understanding a student and his problems is the extra part of Mrs. West's job as attendance secre- tary. Although her duties are mostly clerical, her enthusiasm for student interests and activities make her a lively asset to the office. Showing her- self a true Libra, she has a keen eye and instinctive knowledge. Her Libra love for justice helps keep some students in line. Girls who assist Mrs. West in the office attest to the fact that she offers a warm smile to everyone who enters the office, and that she performs her work with efficiency and ac- curacy. ,i Q, S ..,. 7 jjyyp 2 1 1 -iii.. CAPRICORN: General tendencies of this sign show Bob Byerly to be a man who can withstand stress and exhibit leadership and skill to many people. He has a balanced sense of values which causes others to seek his direction. Inheriting a team that won only a single game in the previous two years, Mr. Byerly showed he was a true Capricorn by bringing La Vega to the best football record since 1961. He never failed to stress that getting an education was more important than football. Mr. Byerly gained the respect of all the players and of his students. Not only as a foot- ball coach, but also as a well qualified math teach- er, he is fully dedicated to his job. 3 AQTWQ' f69gEg?Q Q ff 'uf' vow 'L l Q5 ,srl 0 Q! Work began in the summer and was finished in the fall. The walks con- nected the narrow walks already there to the building. 6 Working on the landscaping were ffrontb Ronny Meaders, Fred Knight, fbackj Jerry Smith, Tim Peyton, Hardy Cole, Jasper Robertson, Ricky Tobias, Mr. Blansett and Mr. Mahan. Landscape Improvements Keep Ag Boys Busy While some were enjoying the summer break, boys from the Agriculture classes were helping land- scape the area in front of the main building. Money from Student Council projects paid for the cement quadrangle built in the spring and for ma- terials to landscape it. The boys made wider cement walks, planted shrubs and small trees in efforts to provide a pleasant first impression of La Vega by visitors. has Ei f. ,JT v .r'i1r : ' . B Homecoming Means Tradition Homecoming means a time to look back and a time to look forward. Exes return to familiar traditions of bonfires and celebrations. Students look back to these same traditions, and they look forward to the day when they will be the ones coming back. Festivities October 2 and 3 included the bonfire and pep rally. The game was against Mexia's Black Cats who trampled the Bucs during the last half, finishing with a 28-12 win. But the loss didn't seem to stop the spirit of celebration. After the game, a dance and reception for exes and students was held in the new gym. C'heerleader Donna Woodliff was caught in the excitement of the bonfire rally. In her mind was the hope that she f 'X might be chosen Homecoming Queen. 9 Memories Remain Homecoming is more than a time to return to a place. It is a memory of pleasant things revived for one short night. It is the memory of all the football games you ever lost and all the special nights when you wanted things to be perfect. It is a mem- ory of a favorite date standing beside you in the dark field circling the crackling bonfire. It is the memory all girls have of the time they hoped to be nominated queen, no matter how homely they might have been. It is the memory of every player who wanted to make the Winning run just once. Homecoming is a state of mind that recalls What- ever high schools years have meant, even to that short freshman with her first mum. r l S4 -N -..LQ --Q H Delaynne Allen gives up her year's reign to Donna Woodliff after placing the Homecoming crown on the new queens head and presenting Donna with velvet red roses. But the fall began with a few new stories to spice up the old. There was a new principal and a new assistant principal, a new marque sign to advertise School activities and a number of new teachers. But for most, La Vega had not changed much. There was still the promise that soon there would be a new school. There was still the routine and the rules. But somehow the summer had made it a little easier to face the fall, even if it did come a little too soon. U--. I am breaking that tra- dition, and instead of congratulating and addressing the class as a whole, I would prefer to direct my thoughts to each of you individually, through this letter. If I had the opportunity to greet each of you individually, this is what I would say: Congratulations -- on being who you are, a unique human being capable of making a special contribution to our nation and the world. Congratulations on being fortunate enough to have parents and teachers and administrators who care deeply about you . I don't have to tell you what the future holds for you- You know that life has responsibilities as well as rewards, failures as well as successes, tragedies as well as joys. You know that our nation offers splendid opportunity -- and faces grave problems. On your commencement day, then, the important question is what ygg hold for the future. I am confident that your special and irreplaceable qualities of mind and heart and spirit will contribute to the building of a strong, free and just nation and a peaceful world. As you go forward you take with you my best wishes and highest hopes.
