Front Row, L. to R.: Mr. Darrell Torgersen, Miss Marjorie Me Granahan, Mr. Earl Koobs. Back Row: Mr. Wendell Moulton, Mr. Jack Walton, Mr. Gordon Friday, Department Chairman. Many classes such as biology, chemistry, and physics include lab work which develops a sense of responsibility and an organized way of thinking and approaching problems. To help students realize the wonder of life and the inter- relationship among living things is important to all fields of science. Chem Study is a course so new that the regular textbook will not be presented until next year. It was first introduced as an experimental course and was designed to make the student gather information for himself in the lab and generalize this information into theories. Chem Study is just a sample of the many fine courses available to science students at La Sierra. 57

The Science Department is a very active and important part of La Sierra. One can sense the presence of intense learning in the science rooms by the pungent odors, clanging sounds of bells, explosions, croaks of frogs, squawks of birds, and howls of fright emitting from the rooms. Besides providing an exciting hour in one of many classes of science, including biology, zoology, live science, chemistry, physics, physiology, general science and others, the various courses contain many valuable objectives, aims which will be of use to students for their entire lives. A main objective is to instill in students an appreciation of nature’s systematic laws which govern the world. 56

Social Science Front Row, I. to R.: Mr. Robert McCorkle, Mr. Dexter Healy, Mr. Joe Simms, Miss lyndcll Moore. Standing: Mr. Calvin Rasmussen, Department Chairman. Back Row: Mr. Robert Mazzuca, Mr. Louis Broemeling, Mr. William Smith, Mr. James Ray, Mr. Allen Long. The purpose of Social Science instruction is to help young people become good American citizens. It is mainly through these courses that students have an opportunity to learn about the fundamental attitudes, beliefs, and institutions of our society and those that characterize life in other parts of the world. Further, students need to know and understand the nature of our civilization and be encouraged to discover ways in which they can contribute to its further development. 58
