One of the main objectives of the mathematics teachers at La Sierra is to develop in the student an understanding of these various math courses. An- other very important objective is to create an interest in mathematics and to hold the interest throughout the course. Because of the importance of mathematics, the Math Department is certain- ly an important part of La Sierra’s curriculum. 51

When many individuals enter high school, the Math Department seems to be an endless world of signs, symbols, and formulas. But as they progress into higher math courses these signs, symbols, and formulas begin to mean something to them. To help students learn the fundamentals of mathematics the Math Department has a variety of courses, ranging from Basic Math to the XL program. Each course is especially developed to help the student learn mathematics through an easy and enjoyable method. 50

One day a week, cries of agony resound through the halls of La Sierra. It's composition day in the English classes! However, writing compositions is only or e of the many facets of the English Department. Many other important phases include the teaching of proper grammar and the development of a background in good literature. While in English, students learn to read thoughtfully, listen intelligently, express themselves effectively, and think critically. 52
