Roundup Volume VJII La Sicrra high School CARirnchAel, CAlifoRniA pOReWORd Whether it was running for touchdowns or cheering on the team, planning for pep rallies or hitting the books, campaign- ing for offices or entering speaking contests. La Sierra's student body set a fast pace for 1963. Although the Freshmen may have begun the year a little uncertain they soon found they were diligently applying them- selves to the many activities which the school offers. Under a strong leadership, the sophomores emerged. With their tremendous amount of class spirit things came as easy for them as ABC. This year's junior class showed an outstanding amount of athletic ability in the many fields of sports. Co-Editor: Pom Wyckoff taBle Of 6. ..Seniops 90. I 38. . . aoministRAtion 48. . .CuRRiculum 80. . .Student aOministRAtion . activities autumn WinteR SpRinq Despite their small size, the seniors united to show their strength in such activities as the canned food drive. They set the pace in their quest for change which was evident in their Baccalaure- ate. Now, for many of us, the time has come to part our ways. The memories put before you on forthcoming pages have tried to capture the rapid pace which has been set this year at La Sierra. As we present this, the 1963 Roundup, to you, we hope that you will derive much pleasure from it both now and in the future, and trust that it will become one of your most treasured Co-Editor: Kathy Linn possessions. :ontents 122. . .SpeciaL featuRes 148. . .SpORtS 176. . . student diRectoRy 208. . .Ads 5 JANEY A8EL Girls' Vice President 4- Girls' League President 4; A.F.S. 1, 2, 3, 4; Lingua Honoraria 2. 3, 4. When many individuals enter high school, the Math Department seems to be an endless world of signs, symbols, and formulas. But as they progress into higher math courses these signs, symbols, and formulas begin to mean something to them. To help students learn the fundamentals of mathematics the Math Department has a variety of courses, ranging from Basic Math to the XL program. Each course is especially developed to help the student learn mathematics through an easy and enjoyable method. 50 One of the main objectives of the mathematics teachers at La Sierra is to develop in the student an understanding of these various math courses. An- other very important objective is to create an interest in mathematics and to hold the interest throughout the course. Because of the importance of mathematics, the Math Department is certain- ly an important part of La Sierra’s curriculum. 51 enqlish Standing: Mr. Millard Stroh, Deportment Chairman; Mrs. Laigh Kinney, Mr. Albert Wuesthoff, Mr. Rodney Kuehne, Miss Marilyn Billingsley, Mr. Richard Watson, Mrs. Jane Bowers. One day a week, cries of agony resound through the halls of La Sierra. It's composition day in the English classes! However, writing compositions is only or e of the many facets of the English Department. Many other important phases include the teaching of proper grammar and the development of a background in good literature. While in English, students learn to read thoughtfully, listen intelligently, express themselves effectively, and think critically. 52 Included in the English Department are the courses of Drama, Journalism, and Public Speaking. Each of these classes along with English are designed to give students a well-rounded concept of the literary arts. It is the hope of all English teachers to be able to broaden their students minds and interests through a rich and varied program. 53 In these pictures, various English classes are shown with students taking part in the different activities offered in La Sierra's English program. Classes pictured here range from Freshman to Senior year English. 54 Members of the Drama class (upper right) are shown working on scenery, one of the many activities of this class. In the latter part of the year, drama students learn the fundamental operations necessary in the production of a play. 55 The Science Department is a very active and important part of La Sierra. One can sense the presence of intense learning in the science rooms by the pungent odors, clanging sounds of bells, explosions, croaks of frogs, squawks of birds, and howls of fright emitting from the rooms. Besides providing an exciting hour in one of many classes of science, including biology, zoology, live science, chemistry, physics, physiology, general science and others, the various courses contain many valuable objectives, aims which will be of use to students for their entire lives. A main objective is to instill in students an appreciation of nature’s systematic laws which govern the world. 56 Front Row, L. to R.: Mr. Darrell Torgersen, Miss Marjorie Me Granahan, Mr. Earl Koobs. Back Row: Mr. Wendell Moulton, Mr. Jack Walton, Mr. Gordon Friday, Department Chairman. Many classes such as biology, chemistry, and physics include lab work which develops a sense of responsibility and an organized way of thinking and approaching problems. To help students realize the wonder of life and the inter- relationship among living things is important to all fields of science. Chem Study is a course so new that the regular textbook will not be presented until next year. It was first introduced as an experimental course and was designed to make the student gather information for himself in the lab and generalize this information into theories. Chem Study is just a sample of the many fine courses available to science students at La Sierra. 57 Social Science Front Row, I. to R.: Mr. Robert McCorkle, Mr. Dexter Healy, Mr. Joe Simms, Miss lyndcll Moore. Standing: Mr. Calvin Rasmussen, Department Chairman. Back Row: Mr. Robert Mazzuca, Mr. Louis Broemeling, Mr. William Smith, Mr. James Ray, Mr. Allen Long. The purpose of Social Science instruction is to help young people become good American citizens. It is mainly through these courses that students have an opportunity to learn about the fundamental attitudes, beliefs, and institutions of our society and those that characterize life in other parts of the world. Further, students need to know and understand the nature of our civilization and be encouraged to discover ways in which they can contribute to its further development. 58 Courses in this department include: World History, United States History, Problems of American Government, Civics, Economics, Sociology, and Geography. The Social Sciences are constantly aware of the need to introduce current international affairs so as to make the student more aware of the present and how it will affect the future. In this way, students may have a chance to make a contribution to the betterment of the democratic way of life. 59 foReiqn lanqiuqe L. to R.: Mrs. Virginia Vanderburgh, Department Chairman, Mrs. Amelia Cangi, Mr. Perry Williams, and Miss Arlene Garcia. The Foreign Language Department of La Sierra High School is considered to be one of the most complete and finest departments of its type in the District. The first objective of modern foreign language teaching is to expose the student to the language as it is spoken. Besides being able to speak the language, the ability to read and write it is also stressed. This year a new method of language teaching has been introduced to La Sierra and is a whole new concept in that it teaches through a direct method of oral skills. To the students it is known as the language lab, but its offical name is the ALM or Holt method. La Sierra prides itself on being up to date in all of the advanced teaching aids and methods. The language lab is one very good example of modern equipment put to use for the benefit of the student. lnOustRial ARts A basic aim of all courses offered at La Sierra is to teach students to work in a democratic atmos- phere where they may learn how to get along in society. Industrial Arts is an especially good example of this, because every section of Industrial Arts involves working with people. Some of the courses included in this department are: electronics; wood working; metal; mechanical; engineering, and architectural drawing; and auto shops. L. to R. Mr. James Brooks, Mr. Everett Headington, Mr. Paul Davis, Mr. Frank Pavan, Mr. Rcnso Del Carlo, and standing: Mr. Neal Rathbone, Department Chairman. Students who do not find satisfaction in academic subjects may find satisfaction in education through an Industrial Arts course. An important purpose of this department is to form good and useful qualities in all of its students. Industrial Arts prepares students for life after their schooling by teaching them to work with people, and in some cases by giving a good background in a field which a student may choose as an occupation. home economics Department Chairman Mrs. Marjorie Daughhetee,- Mrs. Janice Holtgrave, Miss Jacquelyn Allen. Home Economics at La Sierra, consists of those courses, activities, and units of instruction which are designed to meet the home—and family—life needs of all students, and the vocational needs of some students. Depending on their particular interests, students may choose either clothing, decorative arts, foods, home living, or home making. But whichever division the student chooses, he is sure not only to learn a great deal about the Home Economics field but also to enjoy the course to a full extent. Home Economics is just one of the examples of the fine educational departments at La Sierra. 64 Business )epar rpent Chairman: Mrs. Marie Phillips, Miss Maria Sarich, Mr. William Reece, Mr. Bill Monroe. The Business Education Department contains many valuable assets and is not only important to those who wish to enter the business world but is also important as a college prep course. The various classes instill in the students the virtues of patience and neatness. Besides those courses which develop mechanical skills, there, are also courses, such as record keeping, typing and general business which have a personal value by themselves in addition to contributing to general vocational understanding and efficiency. Courses such as consumer education and business law possess many social values and are a contribution to the whole field of general education. 65 Art courses offered at La Sierra provide a broad background in art experience and appreciation for those students who will only take one art course during high school. For students who are interested in art as a career it also presents the necessary fundamentals needed for advanced art classes. The art courses at La Sierra, which include: art, art survey, art workshop, ceramics and sculpture, commercial art, and drawing and painting, place great emphasis on originality, creative thinking and seriousness of purpose. 66 fine Acts Mr. Ralph Goings Mr. John Koneko E— music Mrs. Maureen Camperi and Mr. Jack Nielson. The Music Department, which consists of Voice Training, Mixed Chorus, A Cappella Choir, Girls’ Glee, Intermediate Band, Concert Band, and the La Sierra Dance Band, is a vital part of our high school. They provide entertainment at rallies, assemblies, dances, games, and many other activities. While participating in these activities students learn dependability and cooperation, not only musically but temperamentally. Also, students are strongly urged to develop their own special talent. 67 Library La Sierra's library has expanded greatly in the last few years. There are now many excellent books available to the students. Reading materials presenting opposing sides to the controversial issues are provided in hopes that they will promote critical thinking. Students may also make ample use of their leisure time by obtaining entertaining and creative books, from the library. 68 nuRse An extremely important function of the Nurse's Office is to instruct students in how to maintain happy and healthy lives. By doing this, the nurse, Mrs. Penny, and her assistants, Sharon Monge, Laura Arthur, Sonja Majorich, Charla Rotter, and Mary Ann Ingrim are thus preparing them for the future and to overcome any barriers that they might encounter. Boys’ physical education The present physical education program of La Sierra High School was first introduced by Coach Stan Le Protti in 1957. In the six short years since its introduction, it has not only become the most widely publicized and emulated physical fitness program in America, but has become a way of life at La Sierra. 70 L. to R.: Roger Brown, Floyd Brown, Rudy Benny, Pot Johnson, John Terry, Steve Pro. Row Two: Bob Burns, Rocky Summers, Wes Rondolf, Monty Mueller, Gory Leymostcr, Mike Tilson. The highly successful system has made compulsory exercise popular by giving all boys a chance to receive group status for physical achievement, rather than just the athletically gifted few. The program first received national recognition in 1961 in a series of articles written for Scholastic Coach Magazine. Shortly thereafter, a four page feature appeared in Look Magazine, and this was fol- lowed by television appearances on local stations and1 on NBC’s Today Show. 72 Since then, a steady stream of visitors and mail has poured into La Sierra. More than 3000 high schools in every state in the union, and in many foreign countries, including Morocco, Viet Nam, and Belgium now use this system. 73 QirIs’ physical education L. to R.: Mrs. Mary Melick, Mrs. Jeanene Heckcr, Miss Carole Crease—Department Head, Miss Betty Czuprynski. The Girls' Physical Education Department is very interested in teaching the femmes of La Sierra the proper forms and techniques of various sports and the policy of good sportsmanship. Our girls brush up on their swimming, and learn how to play and enjoy tennis, golf, volleyball, basketball, baseball, archery and many other fine sports. Modern Dance is also included in the Girls' P. E. Department. This is a class designed to develop poise, good posture, originality, and expression of moods. Physical Education is not only enjoyable but it helps the girls to relax from the pressures of home work and other worries accumulated during other classes. 74 GIRLS' P.E. ASSISTANTS Being physically fit by joining in varied ex-ercises and participating in various sports will help the girls to perform better in school and to be able to face the future with an assurance of success. The Girls' Physical Education Department may never be asked to put on a display of its physical fitness program but it can boast that it has much prettier members than the Boys' P.E. Department will ever have. 75 dmveR tRaininq Driver Training is a course which may be taken at the discretion of the student. It consists of a practical experience with a simulated traffic situation. This primary training is followed by actual behind-the-wheel driving. The chief advantage of Driver Training is that students become more careful drivers. An additional advantage is a 15% cut in automobile insurance costs. 76 teacheRS’ Assistants Suzie Holloman, Janet Hamilton, Sherie Kurk, Sharon White, Judy Burmeister, Joyce Starkey, Carole Jay, Pat Smith, Linda Estes, Judy Fueston, Donna Beers, Pat Helmen- daughter, Sandy Proctor, Tcri Bell, Paulette Coffman, Karen Missal, Sandy Swank, Shicla Parnell, Pam Coffman, Cora Zackery, Kay Paas, Duane Lankford, Mike Farmer, Martha Ross, Kathy Madden, Donna Crowninshield, Karen Henry, Carol Salva. The American Field Service is an organization devoted to promoting world peace through a better understanding between the young people of the world. It is the responsibility of the committee to sponsor La Sierra s Foreign Exchange Student every year. In addition to this, each year, a student from La Sierra is chosen by a special selection committee to represent La Sierra in the American Abroad program. Last year's representative from La Sierra was Senior, Janis Zimdars. Janis went to Norway, where she gained many friends for Amer- ica, and demonstrated what a valuable asset the American Abroad program is. 128 I wtm Jacquie Corsin, our vivacious foreign exchange student, comes from Grenoble, France, in the French Alps near Switzerland. In France, she attended a public school which was not coeduca- tional and was instructed only by women teachers. Jacquie makes her new home with Joyce and Toby McClain. While in the United States she has learned to love ham- burgers, and her favorite Amer- ican sport is basketball. Shg adores doing the twist, and the American custom which she en- joys the most is dating, but she admits that there is one prob- lem—a girl has to wait for the boy to ask her out, and some- times he doesn't. Slang often confuses her because she was taught the “pure English of Ox- ford, which doesn't help much in America. Jacquie plans to further her education at the University of Grenoble, which was founded in 1330. She hopes to become an English teacher! When asked what she had gained by her stay in America, she instantly replied, “Pounds. Also the knowledge of the American people and the American way of life of which I had mistaken ideas. American people are especially nice people. I have learned that the Americans spend most of their time in driving cars or watching television. I have learned that the American people could not live without cokes and hamburgers. Jacquie wishes to thank La Sierra and all her new friends for the most won- derful year of her life. Under the direction of Mr. Jack Neilson, the band spent a great deal of time and effort practicing for half-time shows, presented during the football season. Included in the band's activities this year was the annual Cal Band Day, which was held on October 27, at the University of California at Berkeley. The band, along with many other bands performed a pre- game show. 136 The Marching Band's outstanding performances were responsible for its being asked to appear at the 1962 Camellia Bowl. And no one felt the sting of defeats more than did the boys on the squad. They were a great bunch of kids and it was heartbreaking seeing them come out on the short end of a couple of close contests — ones in which a bit of luck could have given us the victory. Someone has to lose in every game — unfortunately this was our year. But, it can never be said that this group didn't give their 100% plus best. With a squad that had only 3 returning lettermen and faced with a rugged schedule, we coaches felt the squad did an excellent job. Jerry Miley Don Commons Roger Brown Dick Smith Mike Kohle Craig Cochran Dan Commons Mike Roberts We, of the coaching staff and squad members, would like to thank our fine student body for sticking with us right down to the last game. This is a test of true spirit—Longhorn spirit! Wins or losses, no matter what, this 1962 Varsity because of their desire, their fine attitude and most important of all, because they are one great group of boys, we'll never forget them! Quote from Coaches Souza, Ray, and Tucker. The season inaugural against the Highlands Scots was marked by Mike Sarmento 153 three spectacular pass plays, from quarterback Mike Roberts to end Jerry Pagenkopf, which gained a total of 146 yards. The first one came early in the second period when Roberts hit Pagenkopf with a button-hook pass and Pagenkopf scampered 74 yards for a touchdown. Later, in the fourth quarter, the Longhorns gambled on a fourth down and 11 situation on their own 17 yard line, and Pagenkopf took a Roberts pass all the way to the 17 yard stripe before being hauled down. In the second game of the season the Longhorns faced the powerful Falcons of Bishop Armstrong. The Falcons were then rated as the number one team in Superior California. The determined Longhorns narrowly missed upsetting Armstrong in losing 13-6. The Longhorns touchdown came early in the fourth Jerry Smart Dan McGee Bill Goodpaster Mike Pisor Steve Reagor Richard Winkle Mike Tilson Randy Selby Allen Toon Bill Hilsinger Art Kattenhorn Jerry Pagenkopf Martin O'Donnell period as they drove 44 yards in seven plays with fullback Ted Broyhill crashing across from the six for the score. The Homecoming Game was the most exciting game of the season. A crowd of approximately 4,000 saw an aroused Longhorn team upset the heavily favored first place Bella Vista Broncos. The game was a hard 155 hitting defensive battle with the lone Longhorn score coming on an 11 yard pass from Mike Roberts to Ned Heasty in the end zone. The game-winning extra point was kicked by Jerry Pagenkopf. The stout Longhorn defense held the Broncos to a single touchdown. 156 Wayne Irion Phil Jones Jamie Gittens Paul Collins Doug Williams Paul Turner Jerry Needy Ned Heasty 157 junioR VaRSity ( ootBAll Coaches Claud Edge and Bob Mazzuca led the J.V. ream to a second place finish in the Capital Valley Conference. The team had height, talent and a well-balanced attack, but with only'three Seniors on the team, the missing experience could have made the difference in several close decisions. How- ever, as the season progressed the team showed great improve- ment and finished fast by winning three of their last five C.V.C. games as compared to winning only one of the first five in C.V.C. competition. The closing burst included upsetting Bella Vista and tough Mira Loma as well as a heart-breakingly close 3-point loss to El Camino, the number one rated basketball power in Superior California.
