' TfCe pton f. %cUiA edcc itcoH For over three years Elder L. Calvin Dsborn has served as pastor of the La Sierra Seventh -day Adventist Church, and as a spiritual leader throughout this community. His week of prayer last year caused many to give themselves anew to God. His interest in the summer recreational activity for this community fostered religious as well as recreational projects. The newly completed Sabbath School building in which the academy students meet each week shows his interest in us. As chairman of the school board he deserves much credit for the projected facilities for physical education, band, and choir. Yes, we are all very grateful to Elder Osbourn, and to him we dedicate this tenth edition of MEMORY TRAILS with its pictures of this school year. ' P%Mccfr4zC ' 7He i a ii It has been said that coincidence is the logic of destiny, and that to be realistic today is to believe in miracles. The book EDUCATION tells us, however, that a Christian character is not the result of accident; it is not due to special favors or endowments of Providence. A noble character is the result of self-discipline, -- the surrender of self for the service of love to God and man. If we can but learn to deny present pleasures for future benefits, then time can assume more dimension than a little space between two eternities. Success or failure is a relative thing to be weighed against opportunity, talent, and circumstance. La Sierra Academy is more concerned about inner quest than intelligence quotient; more concerned about spiritual value than material gain; more concerned about Christian integrity than mere ethical honesty. Christian Education is not a conformity of external coercion, nor a compromise of an inner compulsion. It is to teach not only what to think but how to think, for in the deepest sense we cannot teach anyone anything; the best we can do is to help them to learn for themselves. We as teachers want to rededicate ourselves to an appreciation of the eternal worth of each individual student under our charge, to detect his latent powers, to discern with a prophetic eye the great accomplishments which may be his, and to be shepherds of the spirit educating for eternity. f€ ' Tfte HO UCUK January 31, 1941 Bill Jacobs December 15, 1958 To those who worked and studied with Bill Jacobs, his life is more than a memory. It was, and always will be, an inspiration. To know him was to see Christian living in action; to have one ' s faith strengthened; to be inspired to better living and greater accomplishments for God. In the lives of all who were his friends, the effects of his example will long be felt. On the night of December 15. 1968. he was fatally injured in an accident on his motorcycle. As fellow stu- dents, teachers, and friends we deeply feel the loss of his positive Christian influence, and we regret his untimely death. VVhy this life of service had to end, we do not now understand. And yet, there is an answer,- -in a te.xt Bill himself learned in senior Bible class: God never leads his children otherwise than they would choose to be led, if they could see the end from the beginning and discern the glory of the purpose which they are fulfilling as co-workers with Him.
