This spirit of La Sierra College- instilled on that first registration day-those endless lines of waiting, the aching feet and blur of faces, students checking and rechecking the signatures needed for the stack of IBM cards which dictate their study for the ensuing months. Assimilation into college life begins for the freshmen with the traditional Orientation. Faculty and upper classmen direct discussions of collegiate life as freshmen ponder and question the social, spiritual, and scholastic mores of campus living and organization. Secondary school concepts of life are exchanged for collegiate views and questions-searching philosophies, evaluating standards-reflecting patterns of life. 1' hd Seam num 59.22 S - 1--Q ll. pg - luslufv KI ILKI 0 ' 'T'-'CK l'YZWI!VI1!!fZK1UU.iM1.l I sa f :,1',,' towne vnu EZ' owne no :vw new an oamag nas and T p 12 gn: ' 'Q - -'7 1 7 K1 r ht' 'V W 1, J X A 4, N x1 Ep - 1 Hx ,A R 0 V. .M,,-p -A., Q - - I - '- nu A 5. -sw' 552 V- x A Vu' . Fabian A. 1NIcie1'. Ed.D. Pfvviffcllf of La Sierra Collvgv, 1962-1963 Jfay 6. 1922 fo Dvfvfnbw' 30, 1963 William M. Landeen President .ln .Mauariaru On tlze thirtieth December last, the most dreaded of assassins came lo our College community and snalehed from us our friend, our colleague, and our leader, President Fabian Allen Meier. We had believed fondly lhnl a man so vigorous and athletic, in the full glow of manhood, would remain with us for years lo come. This hope we have been denied. During the less than one score of months tlzat President Meier led our College, all ofus came lo respeel his integrity of character and to admire his capacity for administrative planning and execution. As ue listened to him unfoldfrom time to time, before the faculty and student body, lzis plans for our College, ive could only respect his nimble wit, orderly mind, and uijailing good humor. President Meier was a cultured man. He was articulate in speech and had respect for clarity and directness of expression. He thought rationally and objectively and could distinguish quickly between fact and opinion. But his thought was also imaginative and creative. He knew a good deal about the world of nature and the world of man, about present-day culture, but he also knew how to use knowledge with judgment and distinction. His personal standards zvere high, he con- stantly emphasized excellence and refused to honor mediocrity or endure shams. His standard of individual behavior was severe and he never hesitated to impress others with his own convictions. He loved La Sierra College. He planned and worked incessantly for its enlargement and improvement. The ten-year plan which he had developed and had sponsored before the Board of Trustees u'ill remake our campus and will be a lasting tribute to his faith in this college conznzunity. Above all, the purpose of President Meier's enzphasis on excellence in .all college life and activity is to be sought in his deep devotion to the service of God and His cause. In his concept of life and service, Christian education was not merely a good way to prepare oneselffor service for God and humanity, it was the only u'ay. With our President, Christian education was a passion, it was tlze suprenze way to true excellence in life. Christian education alone could bring to young people the maturity, balance, and perspective necessary in suc- cessful and meaningful service. President Meier is gone. Yes, but not quite. He still lives among us in his character and achievements, as well as in our memory of him. And the nzore we seek to follow tlze pattern which he gave us of hard ivorh. ofjudicious thinking, of carejiil planning, of high degree of excellency in our work, of unreserved devotion lo God, and ofdedication to our La Sierra College, the better and longer will his contribution remain and our lives be enriched by his example and labor on our campus. And then, ive will meet him in the morning . W. M. The development of La Sierra College, structured for a ten-year period, was planned and initiated under the leadership of the late President Fabian A. Meier and President William M. Landeen. Tentative dates were proposed for the projects, and completion of the first two projects was announced. Future plans include remodeling or relocation of the library, cafeteria, dormitories and classrooms. The ten-year plan, a confident look at the future of La Sierra Col- lege, reflects the enthusiasm and far-sightedness of the college admin- istration and Board. Howard Riverside, California The needle on a compass points north. lt has been the guide for mariners across traclcless seas for travelers in the desert areas of earth, and for countless others who have needed direction lt is not the needle on the compass that provides the direction. Neither is it the pivot or the markings on the compass. Rather, it is the attraction of the needle to the north magnetic pole The needle acts only as an agent. Man by himself is of little worth. His only value comes as he is directed by the Holy Spirit Then, there are no limits to what a man can accomplish. There is need for Spirit-guided men and women--both young and old--in the Southern California Conference. As you plan your career think of the needs of this conference in the most populous and still one of the most rapidly growing areas in the United States. g s l l A E I 1 T T f .
