At right, Lavaun Ward and Art Sutton find quiet repose on the shores of Manila Bay, while more ambitious LSCites sail its placid waters. Scholarly collegians took a few pages of early American history to the school picnic with them. Dr. Airey was chairman of the planning committee, which readily ex- plains the causes of the events. All picnickers were ral- lied on two opposing sides, Rustics vs. Aristocrats. Social distinction was apparent at mealtime when the Rustics were fed knapsack burgers, cold beans in the can, pronto pups and swamp water, in the other line, the Aristocrats were served minced steak sandwich deluxe, haricots en boites, canine a la blanket, and sparkling burgundy. Famous Rustics and Aristocrats from history were portrayed in a Gay Nineties quiz program to end the day's activities. PONY EXPRESSgAmong those who wheeled past the ancient relics and vegetative beauties of Irvine Park were Patsy Pfeiffer and Bud Seltzer, King of the horseshoe courts, Dr. Airey casually flings another ringer. In spite of his Aristocratic heritage, the revolt of the Rustics undermined the principle of noblesse oblige and won the horseshoe contest. A fl' 'P I I I n LOOKOUT TREE: There's plenty to se at a picnic. From her vantage point, Barbar Crew could observe the Trust Busting soccer gameg the use of the Big Stick in baseballg the volleyball and badminton at Kitty Hawk, the filthiness of Yellow JournaIism legg-throwing contesttg and the Smear Campaign ofthe pie-eating duel. DRIVING THE GOLDEN SPIKE: Fleet-footed runners swiftly pounded over the sod in a thrilling relay race to complete the driving of the first spike. Aristocrat Barton Carnes slides into the rendeivous in a courageous attempt to overtake Rustic Calvin Nash's spike-driving lead. The Rustics won. t25 Amidst the shouts of battle, the rugged rowboats ol the Rustic and Aristocratic navies weaved uncertainty about the course under the direction of ambitious but not too skillful admirals. ln the close mixed-couples race, Pete Valdez and Stan Mulder hopefully heave to the starboard as their noble ship lists heavily to the port on the outside turn coming into the homestretch. The battle was com- pletely taken on every score by the Aristocratic seamen. 6 0 .ai pa ob --ft'-o'flGl'Ui'0'l 4,41 AQA - . v i -- .1 1, . - - . - . , ' s' sv 4 . I ,.
