Born in 1909 in the clamorous city ol' Chi- cago, Codlrev 'liryggve Anderson thrived in an atmosphere which reeked with the issues of pre-YVorld XVar I, a background which was later to inlluence his research interests. During his senior year of college he married his dark-haired sweetheart from San Fran- cisco, and following his graduation from Broadview College he received his M.S. at Northwestern University in 1934. Still a young scholar he took up the heavv responsibilities as instructor in historv and dean of men at Oshawa Missionary College. From Oshawa he was called to head the de- partment of history at Atlantic Union Col' lege, where he later became dean of the college. Always a diligent student with a keen interest in the Civil XVar, he continued his studies and received the doctorate degree in 19-H lrom the University ol Chicago.
