Another best memory was the year our Varsity Football team won the AAA CIF Championship, 1968. The changes that I have seen in the last 25 years have been mainly the changes in peoples ' attitude about school. Students are still friendly and it ' s fun to teach them in class and get to know them outside of class. I would rather teach at La Serna than at any other campus. Believe me, comparison will tell you how fortunate you are to be a Lancer. — Wes Reed My best memories of my years so far at La Serna have been the students and the people 1 have been in contact with at La Serna. Having an ex-student teach or work at La Serna. Another memory has been the beauty of the campus. Furthermore the coaches I ' ve worked with and the athletes I have coached. The changes that I have seen in the last 25 years have been the transition of administration staff and other person- nel as the school has grown and gotten older. This seems to be going fairly smooth. I feel fortunate to have taught part of my teaching career at La Serna. — Bob David 28 Of La Serna s First Years The thing I most remember of my years at La Serna was when we first opened. I remember how good it felt when a room was finished. Also how nice it was when we had grass and sidewalks. In the last 25 years, there have been many positive changes in educational programs, equipment and facilities. But yet the student population stays pretty much the same. I like to say that the kids stay the age 14-18, but the teachers get older. — Joan Bell There are two best memories that stand out. My last Varsity Football team that shared the League Champion- ship and defeated Huntington Beach and Long Beach Wil- son to reach the CIF quarter finals at Long Beach Arena. And my first computer programming class which was taught by using one micro computer with IK memory. The changes that I have seen in the last 25 years have been incresed attention to girls athletics on the part of the administration. Another change has been the use of comput- ers to assist instruction. Also, the development of the Ad- vanced Placement Honors Programs at LSHS. — Dr. Jack Pribnow 29 1986 3:0 Memories 31 « ft f 1  • C Faculty ' W mk. v. We were thrashed on at the welcome assembly by the sen- iors. AS the year progressed we picked ourselves up accom- plishing many things such as: tying for third place in the homecoming float competi- tion, beating the juniors in Donkey Basketball and put- ting on a good fight in Pep Week. De- cisions about what will be taught and who will teach it are central to the operation of any school. To a large extent, student success and staff morale are based on matching strengths with available courses. We offer at La Serna a comprehensive curriculum, just as all other schools in the district do. In addition, we are the only school to offer Latin, and to offer three A. P. courses (in English, History, and Calcu- lus.) I don ' t know if we are better than curriculum divisions in other schools, but we do our best to design and monitor a school program that meets as many individual needs as possible. We try to listen to ideas from everyone concerned, and come to solutions that provide the most good for the most people. — Tony Mason Vice-Principal — Curriculum 154 Drama The 1985-86 Drama classes enjoyed one of their best years ever. Besides performing at several festi- vals and competitions, the students put in a special performance in Valentine ' s Day for all of the English classes. Scenes from student-written productions were filled with energy and lots of hard work. Under the leadership of Mr. Earl Byers, the Drama Depart- ment at LaSerna has earned the distinction of being one of the very best in Southern California. ■ ■■- ' -- ' ■ ' • ' I 157 Math Other than obvious goals of any public high school math department, your math teachers at La Serna are dedicated to develop individual learners and bring them as far as their desire and ability to learn allows. Personalized, humane instruction is valued as much as subject matter. Our seniors will remember that a math teacher, who had volunteered to give up three to five free hours, came into their English class to help prepare for the CAP test. Your 1985-86 senior class made history in the Whittier Union High School as 20 advanced math students completed the first formal, year-long calculus course ever taught in any of the six schools. La Serna ' s math department was also honored by the Uni- versity of California system by awarding students in our calcu- lus and math analysis Honors classes an extra grade point when calculating GPA. Our computer programming course, which is taught in one of our modern computer labs, also received spe- cial consideration from University of California as it was judged to be acceptable for satisfying the A-F requirement for a third advanced math course. 158 T Science La Sema ' s Science Department is a very active place. The students are directely involved with a lot of ' hands on ' experi- ments. They study everything from ' wave formation ' in ripple tanks to sharks in Marine Biology. Others work with chemicals; making gases and other compounds. Topics that are covered range from ' What ' s going on out in the rest of the Universe? ' to ' What ' s going on in your own mind? (scientifically speaking) ' This year some of the students went to Griffith Park Observa- tory in preparation for the arrival of Halley ' s Comet. Others will be camping out in the desert to get a better view of the same comet. Newly formed this year is a chapter of CSAS — Califor- nia Society for the Advancement of Science; a group of students interested in science who work through Cal Tech. Besides the rest of our teaching staff, we ' ve been lucky to add two great new teachers — Mr. Ray Guarino and Mrs. Sue Williams. Our stay in London was terrific to say the least. From a cruise on the Thames to West- minster Abbey, Buckingham Palace to St. Paul ' s Cathedral and the Tower of London; the trip was truly memorable. Attending Cambridge University for the four weeks was quite an experience! The classes and lectures were never dull (90% of the time — that is). Of course, it wasn ' t all fun and games, but the educational aspect was definitely not limited to the classroom. All in all, we made a lot of new friends and shared a lot of good times that will never be forgotten. — Jana Hoffman Career Day Offers Avenues What is Career Day? It ' s a day in which about eighty speakers come to talk to the stu- dents about different career options. This year something new was added. During lunch, a career fair was held. People from trade schools and the military came to show addi- tional career options to students. Career Day is an annual event that is helpful to students trying to choose a career for themselves. 181 Expanded Horizons 182 The Expanded Horizons club at La Serna had a great year doing many outside school activities. OR WHAT? A season where the players and a coach find one of their fondest memories being the great student cheering section . . . Crowd intimida- tion so strong the opposing players stayed away from our side of the team to win games of which they should not have been victorious ... A season of lows from being 1-6 going into league added to sickness, injuries, and frustrations to the point of losing one game by more than twenty points ... A season where we found a high of winning the league championship after being picked to finish in third place ... A season where we found Robert Stone becoming the first player in La Sema history to score over 1 ,000 points and break a total of nine school records ... A season where we are amazed at a sophomore center (Tyler Austin) who had broken the offensive re- bound record for one game and re- ceived first team all-League honors ... A season of tremendous heart and and unity culminating in such games as the overtime win against Whittier when everyone counted us out ...
