Nineteen seventy six was certainly a watershed year for the United States and LaSalle College. Not only did the country end its sec- ond century, but Philadelphia ' s first Bi- centennial college also witnessed the end of an era: Daniel William Burke an- nounced in late October that he would step down from the presidency in January after seven-and-a-half years in the office. The announcement left some of the campus community surprised and others sorrowful. Br. Burke felt that 17 years as an administrator (including nine years as vice president) was a long time . . . time for a change. Change has been the watchword at LaSalle ever since Br. Burke assumed the presidency eight years ago. During his first year, the day division of the College turned co-educational and accepted 130 women students, a figure which has in- creased this year to more than 1200. In 1971, LaSalle College introduced a crimi- nal justice program. Within the next year, construction on Olney Hall, the new lib- eral arts building, and Hayman Hall, the new athletic facility, was completed. As a member of the Pennsylvania Asso- ciation of Universities and Colleges (PACU) and Commission for Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU), Br. Burke was an instrumental force for se- curing Institutional Assistance Grants (IAGS) for LaSalle students. The Wister Hall Annex was completed in the fall of 1974 and the Building Blocks Day Care Center in 1975. LaSalle began Philadelphia ' s first weekend college in the summer of 1975. The new art gallery, Br. Burke ' s personal project, was opened in November, 1975, with more than 155 paintings and 500 prints and drawings. The College also instituted a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) program in the fall of 1976. 20
