=TcT=. PHILaDGLPHla. pennsyLuama i fc $ ■ 1 All too seldom we encounter a person who through his own quiet spirit of dedication profoundly effects the lives of others. Such a person deserves our trust and receives our admiration. Such a person is Brother Thomas Donaghy. A member of the La Salle community for sixteen years, he continues to be an inspiration to the students here. A past director of the Evening Division and former history Department chairman, he brings his experience to various faculty committees. To the Sigma Beta Kappa frater- nity over which he is moderator Brother T is a friend and wise confidant. To those of us in the dormatories he is a reflective listener, who ' s door is always open. Brother Donaghy ' s concern is coupled with a down to earth manner, a disarming humor and at times a piercing seriousness. As an instructor he uses his insight to help us find our own. He embodies the axem; A historian, therefore, in all that he relates, should take care to be guided in his judgement by the genuine and real circumstances of every action, without reference to those who may have been engaged in it. (Polybuis) The author of five books he is an active contributor to his own discipline. One, Conceived in Crisis is the history of our own institution. Therefore to a teacher, scholar and a friend, we the staff of the 1977 Explorer dedicate this publication to Thomas Donaghy F.S.C. F 3 C U L-Ty Page 18 campus L.IFS Page 50 BTM LST|CS.. Not only did the country end its sec- ond century, but Philadelphia ' s first Bi- centennial college also witnessed the end of an era: Daniel William Burke an- nounced in late October that he would step down from the presidency in January after seven-and-a-half years in the office. The announcement left some of the campus community surprised and others sorrowful. Br. Burke felt that 17 years as an administrator (including nine years as vice president) was a long time . . . time for a change. Change has been the watchword at LaSalle ever since Br. Burke assumed the presidency eight years ago. During his first year, the day division of the College turned co-educational and accepted 130 women students, a figure which has in- creased this year to more than 1200. In 1971, LaSalle College introduced a crimi- nal justice program. Within the next year, construction on Olney Hall, the new lib- eral arts building, and Hayman Hall, the new athletic facility, was completed. As a member of the Pennsylvania Asso- ciation of Universities and Colleges (PACU) and Commission for Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU), Br. Burke was an instrumental force for se- curing Institutional Assistance Grants (IAGS) for LaSalle students. The Wister Hall Annex was completed in the fall of 1974 and the Building Blocks Day Care Center in 1975. LaSalle began Philadelphia ' s first weekend college in the summer of 1975. The new art gallery, Br. Burke ' s personal project, was opened in November, 1975, with more than 155 paintings and 500 prints and drawings. The College also instituted a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) program in the fall of 1976. 20 21 Thomas McCarthy, Vice-President, Student Affairs David Fleming, Vice-President, Business Affairs 22 Thomas Coffee, Dean of Evening and Summer Sessions Brother Andrew Bartley, F.S.C., Director of Admis- sions 23 Eugene Cattie, Director of Financial Aid Rev. The Expl orers were led by Vince Kelly, who was named all-ECC for the third con- secutive year. This year, Vince was also se- lected co-MVP of the ECC Eastern division. Co-captain, Jerry Franklin, won all ECC hon- ors at halfback while scoring 3 goals. Tom Byrnes led scoring this season with 6 goals and 3 assists. This gave coaches; Ira Davis, Mike Costello and Larry Simons the tough job of finding talented freshmen to fill the gaps. A strong recruiting effort produced six top runners, including two High School ail-Americans. These freshmen join the ranks of other top performers. Inexperience and injuries hurt the cross country team early this year, but the indoor and outdoor meets should produce a number of titles in relays and individual performances. The ultimate goal on the minds of all the team members is to better last year ' s strong 2nd place finish in the ECC champion- ships. Consistent, high-quality performances from all the seniors and star underclassmen will spark a winning season and put the ECC championships within reach. 92 93 Ice Hockey The LaSalle Ice Hockey Club, in its 6th year of existence, got off to the fastest start in its history this year with a first half record of 4-1-1. Competing against topnotch competition the team looks for- ward to spirited action on the ice. Seriously eyeing the playoffs for the 1st time in 6 years, the Explorers hope to compete for the Spikes Trophy, which goes to the champion of the Dela- ware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference each year. The Explorers, having finished 2nd in the ECC Championship Meet for the past 4 years, hope to capture the title this year. With Tom McKeon, the de- fending ECC 100 and 200 yard freestyle champion, returning along with the three other members of the conference champion 400 yard freestyle relay (Rob Ehinger, Lee Cummins and Dan La- very), the title seems within reach. Ralph and freshman brother Tony, a freestyler and backstroker, combine with Rob Ehinger to give the Explorers one of the few brother trios in NCAA history. Edwin Borja, a freshman but- terfly and distance freestyle ace from the Philippines, who represented the Philippines in both the Munich and Montreal Summer Olympics brings his expertise to LaSalle. A combination of swimming, hock- ey, and soccer played in a swimming pool. The sport now is gaining recognition on the east coast after encountering years of success on the west coast. LaSalle ' s Water Polo Club enjoyed another fine season this year. After copping the Eastern Inter- collegiate Water Polo League Division II Champion- ship last year, the team moved into Division I Competition this year. The team did not fare as well this year due to the competition in the new divi- sion, which is the best in the east. The club, which may acquire varsity status in the future, will have to acquire an experienced goaltender in order to guar- antee success in the future. r «s  . ■-.. M HH ■ £-■- ' JM 101 Men ' s Basketball Recruiting is as much a part of college basketball as the layup. After a mediocre 75-76 season, Head Coach, Paul Westhead and his staff went to work to build up the team. They managed to come up with six outstanding high school seniors, who, when blended with the players from last year, make a strong team. The squad is led by team captain, Donn Wilber. Donn ' s ex- perience and leadership are perhaps the team ' s greatest assets, not to mention his prowess in scoring. Following Wilber in the scoring department is Frosh, Michael Brooks. With just one year of Big Five Basketball under his belt, Brooks has already established himself as one of the finest ballhandlers in the Big Five. Tony DiLeo, Jim Wolkiewicz and Reggie Miller round out the starting team to make an explosive team on the court. LaSalle has managed to play well against other teams and only encountered their first defeat at the hands of the Crimson Tide of Alabama. Despite the loss, the game was not without excitement. Anyone who was there will never forget Tony Plakis ' s unusual basket. Tony took an off-balance garbage shot from twenty feet, that, to the shock of the fans, miraculously found the hoop. The statistics of the games fail to show what dedication, en- thusiasm and hard work the players put in. They don ' t show the hours Paul Westhead and his assistants Joe O ' Connor and Lefty Ervin put in to mold these individuals into a working unit that has developed into a truly fine team. Blending with Pendergast in the backcourt was junior transfer Maria Gross, a quick, gifted shooter who ran the fast break very well. Tri-captain Nora Kramer contributed valuable leadership and playmaking skills, while another junior transfer, Kathy McGovern provided much needed rebounding. Perhaps the most important improvement in this year ' s team was the overall depth. Third year coach Angie Scarengilli had a much more talented bench than last year that offered her many more options. This deep, talented bench was probably the key to this year ' s record and 4th place finish in the EAIAW Small College Tournament. Out of the ten players to gain births on the roster, seven consist of returning players. These seven players have 17 years of ex- perience behind them. Some of the bright spots include veterans Larry Seville and Tom Helnick (co-captains), and seniors Jack Kanoff and Art Torno. At number 1 for his third year will be junior Cliff Raben. With only one player lost to graduation, the Explorers and coach Jeff Driscoll look to reap benefits of a rebuilding program which began three years ago under the guidance of co-coach Steve Sesody. 113 Women ' s Tennis « ■ •  •■• '  . « • • MM • - •.- -. . Co-captains, Judy Haegele and Angie Stacey, playing number 1 and number 3 position, contributed greatly to the team with their consistent playing. Frosh Mary Beth Doman playing num- ber 2 position upgraded the talent of the squad. The dedication of doubles partners and other team members in other action makes the coming season look promising. Much of this can be attributed to the work of coach Gene McDonnell. Gene has been the coach of the Explorer club for 17 years and he continues to display the same intense amount of enthusiasm year after year. This enthusiasm shows up game after game through the members of the team whether actively participating in the game or just warming the bench. Gene is perhaps one of the greatest confidence builders around. To perform well in baseball, one has to have the utmost confidence in himself and his ability. Gene ' s overall knowledge of the sport and the strategy of the game and his ability to develop an individual ' s talent on the field has enabled him to put together a well developed team. His dedication for baseball, despite the inevi- table frustrations, has made the LaSalle baseball team one of the most respect- able programs in the area. The 1975-76 Explorer squad had a record of 16-13 which was good for 3rd place in the ECC ' s. With the great amount of talent that the coaching staff has developed, the squad should improve greatly on last year ' s record. The mound- men will be headed by Fred Morris and )ohn Bisco. The junior class provides the squad with these key hurlers: Tom Filer, Bob Pisker, and Larry Busto. Senior Bob Sarcewicz, who hit .360, was an ECC all star last year, along with Bruce Reiprich, who holds the school record for home runs in a single season with 9, will lead the offensive attack. 116 117 Bottom Row: John Rankin, Mike Rucci, Mike Morin, Joe Steelman, Jim Vendetti, Joe Stampone, Ed Mortka. 2nd Row: Pete DeAngelis, Paul Toskes, Fran Karmazian, Bob Pisker, Jim Doran, Larry Busto, Sam Riccardi, Pete Sarcewicz, Top Row: Coach Gene McDonnell, Ass ' t. Coach Butch McNally, Barry Brodzinski, John Bisco, Bruce Reiprich, Ted Detrich, Bob Sarcewicz, Joe Stallings, Fred Morris, Tom Filer, John Wiseman, Mgr. Gene Ramsey. Coach Gene McDonnell 118 119 120 121 Softball The Women ' s Softball Team, under the guidance of new coach Rick Pohlig, got off to a great start despite several injuries to the team. Joanne Pendergast led the team at shortstop with an impressive batting average of .927. Judy Haegle, the team ' s catcher, followed with a .528 average. The team was able to combine speed and a good defense to finish with a 7-1 record on the year, while giving up only 10 runs. Melanie Matthews ' expertise at the pitcher ' s mound and Debbie Bodnar ' s quick defense at 2nd base, along with other team members contributed to an outstanding season. Joanne Pendergast, co-captain Melanie Matthews, co-captain 122 Golf The golf team despite a 10th place finish in the ECC Championship match, compiled a 10-5 p record during the course of the season. Led by Coach Jack Connors, the team had their best season ever. This was the best seasonal record since the 1965 golf team which went 11- 3. mm yi m David Ellis, Mike Cassidy, Coach: Jack Connors, Nick DiBello, Joe Montgomery 123 Crew An impressive lightweight eight and an improving varsity eight figure to be the feature attractions on this year ' s crew team. The lightweight boat, coached by Jim Kiernan, con- sists of coxswain Joe Blickley, Bob McNamara, Jeff Da vis, John Lane, and John McCarthy. The lightweights performed well last year and only difficult bracketing in the Dad Vail championships prevented a more impressive showing in that regatta. The lightweight eight boat was also the Braxton Cup Champions. The heavyweight boat, coached by Vince Madden, is comprised of Dan Lynch, John Oline, Bernie Shaeffer, Dave Maurer, Pat Walsh, Jim Rodgers, Jim Muskett, and coxswain Michele Hickey. Madden has noticed day-to-day improvement and is expecting continued good showings from the heavyweights. The entire team is pointing to a season-ending. Dad Vail Championships on the Schuylkill River as the culmination of the year ' s hard work. Lett to Right: Bob McNamara, Mike LacLeish, John Worthington, Paul Boyle, Joe Blickley, Jeff Davis, Tom Kauffman, John Lane, John McCarthy 124 Left to Right: Keith Braxton, Don DeCrazia, Mike Wagner, Henry Sheldron, Nancy Gillespie, Ed Smith, Kevin Donnelly, Dan Hingley, Steve Knab Left to Right: Jonathan Oline, )im Muskett, Dave Maurer, Bernie Shaeffer, Ernie Huggerd, Pat Walsh, Kevin Weinstein, Dan Lynch, James Rogers 125 ntramurals Whenever intramurals were the topic of con- versation, one of these names were dropped: Moe Men, Denis, Big Top, Diamond Dudes, Ukies, Coal Crackers, Reptiles, South Philly, Lambda, Muggos, or the Apartments. These teams battled through competition that was renacious and talented to obtain top spots in their respective sports. Yet because of the abil- ity of the competition, if the ball had taken a different bounce, the names above might have been different. Who knows? 126 HY . ' . What will become of me — what became of the others, probably. I ' ll grow older, that ' s obvious. A step in the right direction — deal with the ob- vious. I ' ll grow duller, that ' s a relief. Trauma is getting dull, anyway. It shouldn ' t be bad, really. Maybe I ' ll be too busy to think about it. Which shows I ' m still very young, thinking about the future. I believe it to be true that dreams are the true interpreters of our inclinations; but there is art required to sort and understand them. — Montaigue, Essays. 218 219 220 The Brass Ring is Yours The Merry-Go-Round has Stopped We stream onto the campus with the setting sun, already bone-weary from the day ' s labor. Our cars, littered with toy soldiers, rag dolls, and baby seats, jam the parking lots and surrounding streets. We parade endlessly through the iron gates toward the snack bar for a quick dinner of cardboard pizza, warmed up hot dogs, or a couple of Tasty Cakes. Final chapters of textbook assign- ments are read between the gulping of coffee and the greeting of friends and classmates. Upon some silent signal, we disappear into Olney, College, and Holroyd. Inside, we listen, we talk, we watch, we discuss, we do, we participate, we think, sometimes we doze off, but above all — we learn. The hours pass until we emerge into the night to make our way home in the darkness. Yet, our day is not yet done. More hours of study carry us deep into the night, at kitchen tables and makeshift desks with only a stack of last month ' s unpaid bills for company. Sleep comes swiftly. We have learned to cherish it as a scarce comodity. Too soon the alarm clock will ring in the new day. The factory whistle will blow, the timeclock will make its stamp and the cycle will repeat itself. It isn ' t difficult to spot us. We hang onto subway straps with an open textbook in one hand. You may find a worn copy of The Apology in our lunchpail or an unfinished term paper in our lunch hour typewriter. The tired but determined look about us is often an identifying mark. We miss much of what many seem to think college life is all about. There is no dorm life for us. There are no big games, no pep rallies, no fraternity initiations. Yet, there is a school spirit. It is the spirit of shared adversity. It is a spirit of quiet resignation, of motivation, of persistence, of determined and disciplined application of effort. Some fall by the wayside. Many, however, hang in there till the end and collect that hard earned degree. Then we can sit around and wonder what we are going to do on Monday through Thursday nights from now on. Cross Keys needed Secretarial help! 231 lim Morton, Accounting Assn. 232 03 v k W A A - It all started in 1946 - the Evening Division at LaSalle. You may feel as though you too started in 1946 but whenever you did start you came with some vague notion of a better tomorrow. Well, that tomorrow is here. All the questions may not be answered; all the grasping may not be held fast; all the meanings may not be relative, but the test of endurance has come to an end and the abstract motivations that brought you here have now become the abstract surrender to the mundane. Don ' t despair. You can always warm yourself with the wisdom of this book by burning it, if only for a moment of blazing heat. What to do now? What end can be sought now that the commencement exercise has exorcized you from the ivy covered walls of wisdom? There is no war to protest. There is no employment. There is no easy road to graduate school. But, there is hope. You have the power of insight, if nothing else, as a return on your tuition investment. You now have the capability to live more intelligently and responsibly. You are the person you were and more. You are also the person you could be and you are prepared to concretize that possibility. The world about you needs change and you are equipped to facilitate that change. It is no longer up to the other person because you are now that person. Yours has become a position of strength and you need only the courage to apply what you ' ve learned in the experience that is LaSalle. Live your lives, my friends, in the optimism that you can create a better tomorrow for yourselves for now you ' ll never have to stand alone. You will always stand with knowledge in a world that is waiting for your leadership in whatever field you choose. Make your choice, take your stance, and employ those standards of prudent judgement you ' ve come to know through the experience of education. After all, isn ' t that what it ' s all about? Do not be sad at leaving, for nothing static grows. LaSalle will prove to have been just a resting place along your route to some other destination. Do not linger here and become overgrown wi th the ivy that covers the walls and obscures the vision. Choose now the course of action that is never cancelled and whose tuition rate is always reasonable. Be ever thankful, graduate, because you made it. Go now and grow and live in the wonder of all about you that is to be wondered at, secure in the knowledge that you are a better, newer person because of your brief encounter with yourself at LaSalle College Evening Division, class of 1977, Adieu! — Ed Sirkowski -7, % W 233 James J. To those of us who created, labored and finally saw it through to its completion, this publication is all these words and more. We have tried through our ideas, our typewriters and our cameras to present a view of one year in our lives, for many our last year at LaSalle College. The aim has been an all inclusive look in a traditional format. I must mention that without the assistance of the following people this book might still be in the planning stages. Special thanks go to Mr. Bob Davine, our publisher who through his enthusiasm and patience has helped us over the rough spots. To Mr. and Mrs. Abe Orlick who provided us with their expertise in photographic services. I also appreciate the contributions we received from Mr. Bob Lyons of the LaSalle New Bureau, Mr. Larry Eldridge of sports information and Mr. John McCloskey of the LaSalle Public Affairs Office. Finally the Explorer staff greatly acknowledges the emense help that came from the office of Mrs. Kathy Schrader, particu- larl y Ms. Bernadette McGonicle and Ms. Deborah Ebert for their typing assistance.
