L - • . .% ' .  - -v, H 9  In the autumn of our lives we ' ll recall these years, tinted with fond memories of the glad times spent in the City of Brotherly Love. Each moment colored in its peculiarly lovely hue, turning our horizons to flame with red and orange. We are provided a sight no Tnortal painter could duplicate. The breathtaking beauty is for us to retain in our minds eye, sustaining the loneliness of winter with a cherished warmth. Remembering that with the sunset of the year reflected in these impressions we are offered the promise of hope in the future. 1975 EXPLORER LA SALLE COLLEGE PHILA, PA 10 ACTIVITIES 52 SPORTS 94 ADMINISTRATION FACULTY 132 SPECIAL EVENTS 136 SENIORS 204 EVENING DIVISION ■. ' C. -. li Dr. Eugene Gallagher Whenever a man of considerable stature passes from our midst we are compelled, by his greatness, to search within for a stray quality that will create an elusive bond between ourselves and the substancial image of the man. This precise affinty is epitomized in the feelings of those who came in touch with Dr. Eugene J. Gallagher. An alumnus of LaSalle and Jefferson Medical College, Dr. Gallagher tirelessly served the medical profession he loved. Besides being team doctor for LaSalle College, he was one of the leading Physicians for the past four years for the Multiple Sclerosis Basketball Classics at the Palestra, the Multiple Scle- rosis Football Classics at Franklin Field and the All Star Foot- ball Classic for Mental Retardation. While Dr. Gallagher will be remembered for his vast philan- thropic contributions, those who knew him personally recall a warm human being and a good friend. Yet, it becomes impos- sible to adequately recount his accomplishments in a mere testimony of words We hope that by dedicating this year- book to his memory, it will express our admiration and thanks at being part of Dr. Gallagher ' s LaSalle. ACTIVITIES 12 Dy„ ' = Q fim O ' Xfs ' jr — n rl o o o V o cy _) o 13 With luck on their side, November 10th dawned a beautiful warm Sunday. The Open House Committee must have breathed a sigh of relief for the blue skies and the tre- mendous crowd. Committees and clubs arrived early to begin setting up for the extravaganza, each hoping to win the coveted prize Best of Show late in the afternoon. Olney Hall boasted tantalizing dishes from all over the world. The language clubs outdid themselves. Games of change were also to be found and enjoyed. People rushed to claim their plants from the Biology Department and gazed wide eyed at the chemestry magic show performed by Ben Franklin. La Salle in Philadelphia, the theme, was admirably carried out in the dorms with a variety of ethnic pasteries available in the lounges. But one had to eat quickly to make it to the Tap-Off Rally at 2:45. The day moved gradually toward the finale. The results of the hard work and patience came due in the ballroom. The Best of Theme award was taken by the Italian Club for their rendition of the Italian Market. Best in Business went to the Society for the Advancement of Man- agement and the Best in Science was awarded to the Biology Department. The Ukrannian Club was deemed Best in Arts while the Chymian Society received Best of Show. Having heard the results, the crowd slowly dispersed, a little haggard but with a smile on most faces. LaSalle ' s 21st Open House drew quietly to an end. 14 15 Open House Chairperson Kathy McGrath stands between Exhibits and Awards Co-Chairpersons Paulette Travers and Mary Schriver. It has also held numerous bake sales, and was active in selling the Explorer. As in the past, it participated in Open House with an enactment of the courtly tradition of medieval Minnesang with authentic music and costumes. Traditional German folk-dancing was also demonstrated and a German Puppenspiel was presented for children. Partici- pation was highlighted by the fact that each member wore an authen- tic costume representing an histori- cal era or personage including me- dieval crusaders tunics, brocade robes, and cone-hat and gown; Mar- tin Luther (complete with church door and theses) and the traditional dirndl. It is not a language club, but rather has social orientation. Sigma Phi Lambda In today ' s age of individualism, many fraternities have lost the distinctiveness with which they were founded. One no- table exception is Sigma Phi Lambda. The quality and durability of its service to La Salle has been a matter of record since 1935, and the personal value of that tradition has increased for its brothers with each graduating class. Not many social fraternities on La Salle ' s campus can claim the same support from its alumni that Sigma Phi Lambda enjoys perennially. For forty years the most im- portant purpose of the fraternity has re- mained unchanged: to foster friendship within the college community and to en- courage loyalty to the college itself. Blood drive sponsored by TKE 35 Delta Sigma Pi Delta Sigma Pi is the only professional business fra- ternity of the campus of La Salle College. The brothers of Delta Sig annually sponsor a Christmas party for underpriveleged children. This year ' s party was held in the LSC clubroom for the children of the Lindenfield project. To comment on various business opportunities around the city, the brothers sponsor professional speak- ers. These are open for the benefit of all LSC students. To assist students in obtaining jobs after graduation, the brothers co-sponsor Beef and Beer Night, which is an informal meeting between students and recruiters. Fi- nally, the brothers take an active part in intramural programs, both frat and open leagues. The Student Programming Association is just finishing its first year of servicing the La Salle community. It was established this past August as the successor to the College Union Com- mittees to ensure that students are directly in- volved in the selection and operation of the Union ' s programs. Although much time has been devoted to organizational structure and member- ship this year, a great deal of programs, more than there has been in the past several years at the Union, have been presented by SPA. This group has carried out both weekend and weekday film series; various social programs in- cluding dances, plays, concerts, magicians, and lecturers from the entertainment industry; and a coffeehouse program. SPA also conducts various service programs and co-sponsors the Diversion Series with the College Union. It is hoped that the future will bring bigger and better things to this new. but already vital student group. We also had a tour of a center city law firm. 37 Terry Kennedy, Jeff Zimmerman, Tony Ricci, Jim Lily, Dwight Evans LA SALLE COLLEGE 38 LaSalle Singers This season, 1974-75, marks the thirty-fifth anniver- sary of the La Salle Singers. Their history began in the quiet fall of 1939. The campus was small and its only boarders were the football players who found it too taxing to return home after morning classes and afternoon scrimmage. The administration though some sort of cultural activity should be stressed as long as these students remained on campus. The boarders suggested a choir and their idea was accept- ed. Brother Anthony Wallace organized the first group as mainly an on-campus activity which doubled as a social organization. In that peaceful fall of 1939 sixty students joined the Glee Club. They would rehearse in the only facility that could supply accompaniment - the college chapel, under the able direction, of then senior, the late William Cavanaugh [who would return for many semesters as conductor.] In recent years the group has sung on radio station WIP and last Christmas they sang a concert on TV Station KYW [which was repeated again the follow- ing year. Every year the choir sponsors a Choral Festival for neighboring high schools and this year a Gala Thirty-fifth Spring Concert is planned, preceded by the annual banquet. This past season saw Jim Clark recreate his magic in the incredibly humorous play on words, Babel. In addition, we ' ll never forget the wonderful production of Arthur Miller ' s play The Crucible and the stellar per- formance given by Kate McCauley. These are but two of the enjoyable shows presented by this highly profes- sional group. It affords talented stu- dents the excellent opportunity to exhibit their aesthetic abili- ties. This is not strictly a literary publication but welcomes all me- diums of expression. Grimoire traditionally provides La Salle with a delightful selection of sketchings and photography, not to mention the prose and poetry. LaSalle Band COLLEGIAN fe- Operating on a weekly basis the forty staff members and editors of the Col- legian attempt to fullfill three roles on campus. To provide the community with a weekly newspaper of the high- est journalistic quality is the primary function. Secondly it provides a train- ing ground for those with interest in the field of journalism as a career. Finally it affords the student body as a whole the ability to exercise what- ever writing talents he or she may possess. Along with the regular issues, a yearly Basketball Supplement, Lampoon Is- sue, and other special publications, when the need arises, give the staff the chance to display their talents in a wide variety of assignments. The Pho- tography staff, with their own dark room, also offers all staff members the opportunity to familiarize themselves in various aspects of photography. This past season was an unqualified success, culminating in a divisional championship and a sterling 6-4-4 record. A talented coaching staff blended returning veterens with an exceptional group of freshmen to produce an outstanding team. A stunning 0-0 tie with nationally ranked Penn in the season-opener demonstrated the strength of the stalwart defense which was to play an important role throughout the remainder of the season. In the Penn game, La Salle ' s supurb goal-keeper. Rich Hoffman extended a string of scoreless minutes which was to eventually reach a phenominal total of 638. Hoffman ' s excellence was mirrored in the achievements of senior Brad Bentz, who was chosen the most valuable player in the ECC. In addition, Billy Powell, and freshman Vince Kelly joined Hoffman and Bentz on the league all-star squad. The Explorers ' success was in essence, however, the result of a team effort. Bentz ' s defense and unselfish play contributed to the development of flexibility and superior team- work. Despite lapses of inconsistency which seemed to plague the hooters in contests with less powerful teams. La Salle managed to capture first place in the eastern division of the ECC. The Explorers closed their season with an agonizing 2-1 loss to an excellent Bucknell team in the league championship, but the defeat did not dim the brightness of La Salle ' s achievements. This success undoubtedly lays the foun- dation for even brighter moments in the future. 55 The last minute huddle H ■■■I? Their offensive game plan has arrived under the stick of J.J. DiPaola, who recorded a hat trick against Gwynedd Mercy. With the successful 1974 season behind them, La Salle can expect nothing but an increase in victories, since only three members of the squad are leaving La Salle. IHis veteran ballclub must only fill the spots of left field and third base, while strengthening the bullpen. This fall marked perhaps the largest turnout for the baseball team with three or four prospects competing for each position. When the cuts were finalized the bullpen consisted of eight pitchers, only three of them veterans. McDonnell plans to fill the questionable third base starter between veterand Larry White and Dan Barber. At the left-fielder ' s spot he will be splitting time with Sophomore Tony Newshel and Freshman Bruce Reiprich. With the rest of the positions intact, the squad should be able to pick up where the ' 74 season left off. In ' 74 they managed to win five of the nine final games. With the Florida trip in late March, the club expects to get an early jump on the other clubs and start La Salle baseball 1975 off with a bang. oe Stampone pockets third base r y v -- ' !l? Future Cross-Country hopes were enlivened with the performance of soph Jim Hughes who finished twenty-fourth in the championship meet. Hughes returns next season with standouts Jim Zurbach, Jim Guntle, and Mark Conlan. Coach Ira Davis must cope with filling the spaces vacated by co- captains Kevin Brown and Rich Jacovini for 197.5. CROSS COUNTRY The 1974 edition of Explorer Cross-Country pro- duced several victories, both team and individual. The team ' s drawing card was undoubtably senior co-captain Kevin Brown who managed to re-write La Salle harrier records on almost a weekly basis. He exemplified his seasonal style in the Big Five Cross-Country championship. La Salle hopes were slightly diminished when a knee injury impaired Kevin Brown ' s fluent running style. Always a true champion, Brown managed to place second out of a John Malone Ke%nn Brown 68 TRACK Explorer Track and Field in 1974 produced a variety of individual successes despite the team ' s (2-3) record. Sen- ior Jim O ' Neill registered an unprecedented fourth con- ference pole vault title at the MAC championship with a vault of 14 ' 6 . Soph Tom Reynolds shared the limelight with O ' Neill when he chucked the javehn 217 ' 10 for a first place. His classmate, Bob Purper, refused to be out performed. In the discuss throw he also captured the gold medal with a toss of 155 ' 10 . The team managed to finish in the third position among a field of thirteen schools. Despite the loss of vaulter O ' Neill to graduation, Ex- plorer title plans remain vividly alive behind the per- formances of standouts Reynolds and Purper, whose winning ways are expected to instill a chain of similar reactions in the styles of the rest of the La Salle trackmen for ' 75. Their ' 74 performance proved sufficient enough to earn them the second place spot among Middle Atlantic conference teams. The conference leader, Bucknell, suffered a significant loss of per- sonal which might prove to be the edge that brings the 1975 championship to the Explorer mermen. Under Coach Jack Lumsden ' s direction the swim- mers established nine La Salle records. Returning lettermen Chris Gallagher and Jeff Hurley man- aged to break two MAC marks as well as the college standards with a 16:15:09 clocking in the 1650 yard freestyle and a 0:54:23 mark in the 100 yard backstroke respectively. Gallagher and Hurley are joined this season by record setters Andy Ehi- nger (breaststroke), Bob Halligan (butterfly), plus three championship relay teams. These swimmers combine with a host of talented watermen who present a deadly threat to all opponents and records in 1975. mB. The Explorer Crew squad displays an optomistic out-look for success in the 1975 season. After last season ' s (3-5) record, the team immediately set out to improve their performance for the new season. Their rigorous training program promises results through a more productive record in ' 75. Victories last season over Ithica, Washington, and New York Maritime instilled a winning spirit in an up and coming squad of rowers. POTENTIAL CHAMPIONS Talented Explorer Sqvxid Begins Quest For Eastern Supremacy Poteatial is the key word as Coach Paul West- head plots his strategy for the 1974-75 basketball campaign. The Explorers abound in talent and ex- perience, and need only to develop the confidence that comes with winning key basketball games to be competive with the top teams in the nation. La Salle clearly has the ability to dominate Eastern basketball. With four returning starters it would appear that Coach Westhead ' s worries would be minimal. Not so. Westhead must mold individual talents into a cohe- sive basketball unit, and in the process must select a fifth man capable of duplicating the steady play of the now-departed Joe Di Cocco. Consistency must somehow be established if the Explorers are to realize their immense potential. A difficult schedule, including such perennial powers as Mem- phis St., Notre Dame, Penn, Alabama, Clemson, Dayton, Houston, Texas Tech, and Furman, con- stitutes a formidable obstacle in the La Salle ' s path as they strive for real success. The Explorers bid for a berth in the NCAA playoffs will take place in a new setting, the re- cently formed East Coast Conference, with old ri- vals, namely Temple and St. Joseph ' s. Penn ' s awe- some strength and depth loom on the horizon in the Big 5. La Salle should challenge the Quakers ' pre- eminence in the City, which extends over the past five years. The January, 1975, clash between La Salle and Penn could prove to be the pivotal point in the Explorers ' season. The Explorer quintet should emerge from the cold gusts of December and January to bask in the warmth that springtime and post-season play can bring. Their mettle will be tested in two successive holiday tournaments which will pit them against nationally ranked opponents. With dedication and solid team-play. La Salle could easily contend for regional and even national, honors. The potential for such success clearly exists. All the facts are about you. The world has become aware of its invisible citizen. H.G. Wells The Invisible Man Bill Taylor has often seemed to be an invisible force on the basketball court during his La Salle career. He blinds defenders with illusions of invisibility as he floats easily toward the basket. And yet the unpretentious consistency of his excellence does not lend itself to great reams of publicity. In a sense, Billy Taylor has been an invisible man , whose brillance has seemed curiously imperceivable to both the press and the basketball pub- lia Perhaps it is overworking an analogy to maintain that his talents are in any way invisible, but the fact that the sports media has infrequently focused its atten- tion on Taylor is undeniable. While at La Salle, the lustre of Bill Taylor ' s perform- ances has been dimmed somewhat by understandable interest in the sheer hustle of Jim Skyman Crawford and in the flamboyant genius of Joe Bryant. It seems appropriate that, in his senior year, we should focus our attention on the remarkable career of Billy Taylor. He has dispelled the myth of invisibihty by the sheer mag- nitude of his contribution to basketball at La Salle, rivalling the achievements of his predecessors — Foust, Gola, Corace, Cannon, and Durrett. The facts are out about him. The basketball world has become aware of Bill Taylor. In a word, Bill Taylor is smooth. The effortless grace with which he blends his basketball skills have mesme- rized opponent after opponent. He must seem in- defensible at times to enemy coaches as he glides into position for the fluid deadly jump-shot which has become his trade-mark. Lest we create the impression that Billy is somehow super-human, we should emphasize that he too experiences moments of mediocrity. Fortunately for opposing teams, he does not emerge from telephone booths with an S embla-zoned on his jersey. Unfortunate- ly for those same beleagured opponents, lapses in Tay- lor ' s game are rareties. His performances on the court are not characterized by erratic flashes of extraordinary brilliance and extraor- dinary in-eptitude, but rather by consistent excellence. Mere statistics are often unreliable indicators, but in this case a single statistic bears mentioning. The fact that Bill Taylor, by mid-January of 1975, had posted double figures in 65 of 67 varsity contests certainly is a tribute to the remarkably consistent style of play which he has exhibited in his collegiate career. Consistency is a mark of greatness, and perhaps Billy Taylor will one day be recognized as a truley great basketball player. In the murky world of basketball cliches; Taylor could easily be stereotyped as a steady performer with the bland style of play often associated with that term. But Bill Taylor ' s brilliance cannot be captured in cliches or expressed in sterotypes, and his style of play is mani- festly not bland or unexciting. In a sport which would seem to breed inconsistent performances. Bill is a model of consistency. Greatness, that ambiguous and often elusive quaUty is within his reach. Bill Taylor came to La Salle from Tuskegee, Alabama, after attending St. Francis Prep in Spring Grove, Penn- sylvania. As a sophomore, he earned a starting berth on the scrappy Explorer team of 1972- ' 73. Taylor became an invaluable member of a squad which compensated for its lack of superior size or talent with pervasive enthusiasm and hustle. The more than 400 points that Bill scored were a significant factor in La Salle ' s very respectable 15-10 record. 1973- ' 74 was a season of great expectations. Joe Bryant made his much-heralded debut, and, despite the departures of Bobby Jones and Jim Crawford, Explorer stalwarts entertained visions of basketball ' grandeur ' . December brought disappointment as La Salle lost to Penn by the narrowest of margins in a City Series game. The Explorer quintet was plagued by occasional lapses, and even the usually reliable Taylor was not immune to them. La Salle ' s 18-10 seasonal mark was, however indicative of a successful campaign. Xf, 78 1973- ' 74 was an unqualified individual success for Billy Taylor. He recorded 551 points, the eighth best total in the history of La Salle basketball, with a game high of 39 against American University produced by 82% shoot- ing from the floor. Taylor led the Big 5 in scoring with an average of 19.7 points per game, and was accorded Big 5 all-star honors. Bill was chosen Most Valuable Player in the MAC, and was edged by Penn ' s Ron Haigler, a fine player on a more successful team, in the balloting for Player of the Year in the Big 5. Prospects for greater success in 1974- ' 75 seemed bright. By mid-January, the Explorers had compiled a 14-1 record, marred only by an agonizing loss to Canisius at the Palestra. La Salle exploded into national promi- nence through key victories in both the Dayton and Sugarbowl Holiday Tournaments. Taylor was named to the all-tournament team in both instances. Bill had scored his 1000th point in the Explorer ' s opening game with Army, and was averaging nearly 20 points per contest. La Salle was ranked eleventh in the nation, an accomplishment in no small way attributed to the per- formances of Bill Taylor. Bill Taylor had become a complete basketball player, complimenting his potent shooting touch with adept ball-handling, rugged rebounding and tenacious defense. He has the ability not only to play, but to play well in the professional ranks. The facts are out about Bill Taylor. He is no longer an invisible man . The backcourt tandem of Sweet Charley Wise and Glen Collier presents possibly the quickest guard combination in the East. Opposing coaches from the Dayton In- vitational and the Sugarbowl Clas- sic were made believers that the combo were the best duo in the country. Observers tended to over- look Wise ' s adept ballhandling be- cause of the attention he draws from the confusion he places in the opponents offense. Sweet Charley inevitably manages to discover the weakness of any team ' s ball- handling and snatches at the op- portunities to take advantage of their mistakes. When Wise is not harassing his opponents with his de- fensive tactics he can be found burning them on offense. Charley has all the tools of a major offen- sive weapon but generally kept them in storage in his first seasons. He managed to become the Big 5 ' s leading assist man in ' 73- ' 74, but his scoring was below his potential. Through his schooling he should provide the punch in ' 75 for a cham- pionship team by diverting some of the attention accorded to Taylor and Bryant while rounding out the offense. 4_ I 81 Glen Collier provides the other half of La Salle ' s one-two backcourt punch. The poise that C ollier possesses on the court enables him to conveniently share the quarterbacking responsibilities with Wise. His submarine dribbling style enables him to go around and under opponents while he registers his attack. His offensive tactics produced a high assist total in 74, but his scoring total, like his backcourt mate, ranked low despite his remarkable shooting percentage. Collier ' s quiet defense had not been given the deserved praise. His silent style appears ready to explode on the new season. In the forecourt joining captain Bill Taylor flashes all-star Joe Bryant. At forward or center, J.B. provides an unlimited supply of natural talent. In his rookie season he pumped in 486 points for an 18.7 average per game which placed him second to Taylor in the Big 5 and MAC scoring races. With 10.8 rebounds per game, J.B. managed to rule the Big 5 and the MAC ' s as king of the boards. J.B. proved in the conference playoffs the ability he has in the clutch. He provided his best performances in the playoffs when he scored 37 points against Rider and ripped down 17 rebounds against Deleware. The question for the new season involves controlling the agile giant ' s immense talents. Rounding out the starting five came down to a selection of inexperienced men. Coach Westhead narrowed the field down to vastly improved sophomore Donn Wilber and lanky Freshman Jim Wolkiewicz. Wilber ' s talents have yet to be tested, but under Westhead ' s direction he is developing very quickly. A tremendous leaper at 6 ' 10 , Wilber appears to be the logical choice for filling the center spot vacated by Joe DiCocco. Freshman Jim Wolkiewicz does not intend to let Wil- ber capture the starting spot easily. Wolkiewicz plays in much the same sneaky style as past La Salle star Jim Crawford. Described as too skiny this North Catholic grad provid es the bench with the board strength needed to back up the towering front line. The Explorers ' five games of the ' 74- ' 75 season proved victorious with Biscayne and Army providing the only threats. The free-going style from last years team had been replaced by a more deliberate controlled style of play. The flaw in the Explorer offense came from the turnover rate which plagued them through the first set of games. In the fifth game against Canisius with last seasons leading scorer in the nation, Larry Fogle, the Explorers found out how losing tasted. A last minute comeback sparked by Joe Bryant stopped just short of success when the Explorers failed to connect on three scoring opportunities when trailing by one point. The single point defeat sent the team into tournament play with a questionable future. That same uncertainty began to vanish in the opening game as La Salle upset Clemson in a four point victory. The follow ing night ' s win over Texas Tech over- shadowred the team ' s previous performance as they cap- tured the championship. Charley Wise, Glenn Collier, and Bill Taylor captured berths on the all-tourney team. The tournament champions flew to New Orleans to challenge yet another title. In the first round La Salle gained the rights to meet sixth-ranked Alabama in the final based on their five point victory over a tall Furman team. During that game the tragic death of Dr. Gallag- her occured. The team staged a major upset by defeating Alabama 77-73. They stole their second championship in as many tournaments which started another Explorer win streak. The La Salle Five coasted past Hofstra for an easy 25 point victory at home. The Explorers proved that they were for real by soundly knocking off a highly re- garded Memphis State team behind the 34 point per- formance of J.B. Bill Taylor joined the big man with 10 field goals and Sweet Charley added 16 points and 13 assists. The Explorer win streak was increased at Niagra when the squad recorded their eighth consecutive victory on the road with a 10 point win. In La Salle ' s 1975 Big Five debut against St. Joe ' s, the eleventh ranked Explorers met a stubborn Hawk team. The eight point victory provided the first for the Explorers in nine games against the Hawks. The toughest opposition in the game came from the referees who sideglined stars Joe Bryant and Bill Taylor for much of the game. Charley Wise came through in the clutch showing one and all that he and his team were for real. -. In the Philadelphia college game of the year, La Salle faced Penn in the shadows of last season ' s controversial two point decision. La Salle entered in the face of the Quakers ' Big Five win streak deter- . mined to cut the string at twelve. The Explorers Wf apparently put their grips on their first city title since ' 69 when J.B. guided one in with 0:06 left in t • the game. Penn ' s last second effort was thwarted K by Jim Wolkiewicz and the Explorers enjoyed their . fourteenth victory 67-65. Philadelphia District Attorney Emmit Fitzpatrick. 134 The Concert and Lecture Series continued in 1974-1975 to present excellent speakers and musical groups. Due to inflation and the rise in cost to get a speaker or group with national reputation, Jerry Johnson, administrative assistant to the vice-president for Academic Affairs, noted that the time will be longer between nationally known presentations. But the series continues to present outstanding programs. During 1974-75, District Attorney Emmit Fitzpatrick and Wilmington ' s Mayor Thomas Mahoney spoke on politics. There were also lectures by La Salle faculty members such as Fred Foley on The Impact of the Reform Movement on Philadelphia Public Schools: 1965-1974, Brother Geffrey Kelly on Dietrich Bonhoeffer, and Bernhardt Blumenthal reading original German poetry. 1974-75 also saw the debut of the Aulos Woodwind Quintet, La Salle ' s new resident group, made possible through a grant from the Fells Foundation. Spring of 1975 was a festival of the arts with the Poetry Workshop co-sponsoring poets and student reading hour, the appearance of the Philharmonia Orchestra, and harpsichordist Frances Cole. The Concert and Lecture series indeed deserves a vote of confidence for their presentation of excellent speakers and musical groups despite some financial difficulties. Mihi Veniam Dare Potesme? If monuments are epigraphs Pray tell us where (if just for laughs) We are to find one, Who leave the groves of academe As maiden queens of curds and cream And young Byrons? What matter if our cum be zero? From hero unto anti-hero Our minds are blown; We frequently misspoke ourselves, And at this point in time are well Disposed to moan. We ' ve had to put up with a lot, Enough to make us go to pot Or hashish. Ormandy ' s Rhythm by Robert Siefy 249 Our sensitivity ' s in session Around the clock, our mission ' s i 5 Impossible — Or so our learned profs would say, Who ' ve found a sure way to make hay Of adolescence Whose struggles with identity Must be encouraged, they agree. Senescence Prefers to rap than not to rap; Through discipline and all that c p Is passable, It ' s much more fun to gab. The slammer ' s The joker who insists on grammar; He ' s plastic! The -ologies are with it, man! And reams of verse that do not scan Fantastic! Yet sometimes in the still of night Small terrors rise (ayenbite ofinwit ' ). To put it all together, we Dispose to prayer - which follows. See What we ' ve writ: 250 Prayer Preserve us, St. Civility, From all those who would set us free Of mirth and manners; Benignly look on Women ' s Lib So that one still may dare to rib Them - and Family Planners; Serve charitably with gobs of doubt The more self-righteous in our rout Of lovely militants Of various races, sexes (three ?), Who ' re where it ' s at, while guys like me Commit no relevance. And for our peace of mind unstring The flat guitars of those who sing Our nasal masses. The lonesome cowboys of the choir Who with the latest rock conspire While Pippa passes Out. For Goddess mercy have a heart, Against Ron Z r take our part. And Hari Krishna ' ; An interdiction would be nice Re atom bombs, spray cans, and mice (Well never miss ya ' ). Prince ' , Homer nods; yet by your leave A search among the shades retrieves Wisdom: An epigraph that ' s hip by far - Bonarium. Exorcise those whose voices shrill Expatiate on God or pill With equal malice, While saints vi ith Cheshire grins agree To praise your sister Sanity And wondrous Alice. And lest my prayer and wind be long, I shall not chant McK n ' s ' song Or spread the rumor That Auden ' s turning in his grave Or H H S t« or F K R A sense of humor. Enough if now term ' s at an end We practice civility and befriend The minor gods: Have faith, have hope, have healthy doubt. And never let it all hang out (The act of clods). But keep the self to self and know The saints in reticence do go Despite the odds. 0 have = 252 The success of most communal undertaking can be traced to a single pervading force that epitomizes the coordinated achievements of the group. Mr. James T. Lang, through his leadership, provided the 1975 publication of the Explorer with its solidifying ingredient. We would also like to thank the students of the printmaking class for their respective contributions to the yearbook.
