The Daily News-Tribune has been at its present location since 1949. This section, remodeled in i958 houses the news depart- the news with . . The Tribune was sold to Mr. Preston Gran- don and moved to the northeast corner of Second and Wright Street. This building burned in December of l948. The Daily News-Tribune, now in its 7lst year of publication, is a community newspaper, serving l.a Salle, Bureau, and Putnam Counties. Mr. Peter Miller, publisher, also owns the radio station, although the two media are separate in operation and competitive in news coverage and advertising. The newspaper staff ot more than seventy produces a daily paper with a circulation of l5,800. While it emphasizes local coverage, the Tribune attempts to give a rounded picture ot each day's news. In nationwide competition, our local news- paper has won many awards: the most coveted--the Ayer Cup in T950-T951 for typographical excellence. Since l958, the Daily News-Tribune has made available to L-P a full page every Friday for high-school news. progressive press and radio station. I - ' L 'iii' .llbalnf-'ml ll!-I The WLPO Studios moved to this new location in 1952. Since the fall of 1947, when Radio Station WLPO began its operation in the Tri-Cities, the community has heard re- gularly scheduled high-school broadcasts. Originally with studios on the third floor of the Medical Arts Building in La Salle, WLPO made available to the high school one-halt hour per week of air time. Members of the Radio Club-The Voice of L-P-wrote scripts and presented the program from the studio. Since 1952 the high school has had a direct broad- cast from the school studio - courtesy of WLPO. Mr. William Holm, General Manager ot the La Salle County Broadcasting Corporation is Administrative Head of WLPO. Mr. Holm is on the Board of Directors ot the ASSOCIATION FOR PROFESSIONAL BROADCASTING EDUCATION, a group of broadcasters and educators, who work toward securing mutual advantages, and facilitating exchange of information between the two groups, improving educational standards and the like. WLPO with a staFF of eighteen serves a population of 359,243 and a primary area of 8,860 square miles, and serves 700 advertisers in the area. Each semester the high-schol speech class visits the WLPO studios and take over 8096 of the announcing duties. Members of the Vocational Agriculture class tarm about 30 acres of WLPO property as an experimental and fund-raising proiect. WLPO plans to add FM operation by 1961, and provide full nighttime broadcasting. Larry McCann, Chief Engineer since August 1946, is the oldest employee in point of service.
