After dropping the hrst game of the season to Ottawa High School by a score of I8-6, the Cavaliers bounced back to beat Hall in the last minutes of play, l8-7. Then after iniuries hit the Cavaliers, they dropped five in a row. In the ninth game a spirited Cavalier squad rose to fame by pulling the upset of the season, defeating St Bede, 6-0. The season ended with the Cavaliers defeating West Rockford, 146. Leading this year's Cavaliers was Captain Don Papini, who proved to be a great asset both on defense, by his hard tackling, and on offense. Don was picked on the third team of the Daily News All-State team. Also giving Don aid in the line were Cal Muilenberg, Dick Panzica, Jack Mueller, Sonny Hopp, Tom Unzicker, Tony Torchia, Bob Strong, Ken Morscheiser, Gordon Erikson, John Filas, and Nick DeGroot. The backtield was led by the Gold Dust Twins Art Gapinski and Bill Plantan Also playing good ball were Bll and Jim Bray Ted Pagan: and Pete Nolasco One of the big losses of the season came when Swede Larson sustained a broken collar bone in the Hall game Due to this inlury Pat missed every game except the last one In this game he scored a touchdown and looked as if he would score some more when his shoulder was iniured again Two boys who deserve some credit are Denny Rybarczyk and Whitey Nolasco our two managers who kept the team going Also we take our hats off to Jack Fabri the assistant coach who kept our backfield in fine running shape All of us were behind Butch Nowack who did a fine 'ob in piloting a Gne bunch of boys TEAM West Aurora East Aurora Joliet Egin Freeport East Rockford LA SALLE PERU West Rockford BIG B VARSITY FOOTBALL Fmal Standings Won ost Tied Total Points Opp C 0 1 O 6 7 7 OOf First row P Nolasco Studzinski Gapinski Panzica Rybarczyk Manager R Nolasco Manager Bray Hopp Pavinato Second row Harl P Larson Plantan Pagani Barth Harris Sutton Erickson Papini Muilenberg Strong Third row Coach Nowack Konetshnv Wolfe Morscheis r Morris Unzicker P Bray Mueller lllman Assistant Coach Fabrt Fourth row Koontz Marin: Anderson Peoplis Gechmaw Filas Bradner Mathieu Torchia DeGroot fx Page ninety -d3UE ii' A saws - L -af ,4 KK!
