Through the court- esy of Town Crier, Xvilliam Christopher, as- sisted by his old pal Edna Vifarmington, we have a most inlteresting program broadcasted over television station VVLPO of La Salle. owned and operated by Mr. Herschel Norman and Mr. James Ward. We hope this program will be somewhat of a relief after the very heavy lecture just completed by Dr. Edward Mallie, Profe-ssor of Economics at the Univer- sity of Chicago. The last hour of broadcasting has been rather dry since ilt consisted of this lecture and a speech by Mr. Wayne Stevenson, the new Secretary of Agriculture, at Wash- ington, D. C. The announcer, Glen Mackay. begs to interrupt the program with a news flash that Cols. Robert Hundt and George Leyes have just complented a cruise in the South Seas in their palatial yacht, Jane V. The next program sponsored by the Smith Bros. Cough Drops, Inc.. is opened by the beautiful strains of Bob Johnson's Melodv Kings featuring Charles Eustace, playing dir- ectly from the Blue Room of the new Gurrad Hotel. Among the aritists presenlte-d in the floor show will be Betty Luetscher and George Malone doing their latest tango. The Brooker Brothers comedy team will provide entertain- ment between dances. We will now take you to Annapolis where Rear Admiral lvinston Currie of the U. S. Navy is presenting the Distinguished Service Medal to Captain Lester Schweiger for his bravery in the thrilling rescue of James Ben- nett whose plane fell in mid-ocean while fly- ing the trans-Atlantic mail route between New York and Paris. The contract for thte mail route has been recently awarded to Er- ne-st 'Weberling by the Postmaster General. Returning to our studio we present Lois Gress recently of the Caskey Opera Company of Mila.n. Miss Gress will be accompanied hv Alice Kruiltz and will sing Susan Jane Woods' latest composition, the words of which were written by Cecil Donovan. Another interruption. please. the returns from the All-American Motorcycle Polo Match. have just been received in the studio. Ronald Amsler and .Walter Klein have carried away the laurels. This will be Mr. Kleins' last match, for his fiancee, Miss Doris Bales, ree fuses to allow him to partake in so dangerous a. sport any longer. We will now turn von over to Harry Lees at a banquet given fin honor of Miss Ann Sorreniino who has just returned from Rome. She is secretary to Dante Marzetta. the Amer- ican Ambassador to Italy. The toastmaster. Richard Entwistle. h-as just introduced Jerry Bi-olchini, the famous -portrait painlter, and his most recent model. Miss Hilda Ostertag. On her right is Mr. Eugene Farnetti, presi- ldent of the Birmingham Steel Corporation, and his lovelv wife. Dr. Robert Nelson, sup- erintendent of 'the Bureau Technical College. and Mr. R-obert Knapp, the chief electrician of the Bureau Civic Theater will speak a few words. Mr. Theodore Zens, head coach at Dartmouth, and Mr. and Mrs. Dale Miller are among the most distinguished guests. Some like to row or play golf. Some like to read. Some like to drive. So do I, but 1 also like to sleep in church in spite of Fathers vociferous ob- jection and Mother's horror as to what this age IS coming to. But do not think that I am irreveranft, or a heathen, or the like, for I am not. Every Sunday morning finds me sand- wiched between my parents, in the twelfth pew from the back on the lent side, in a little country church which seaits just sixty-three healthy country families. Each family has its special pew and if one should make the ser- ious error of entering a. pew not belonging to him, the owner of that piece of property would probably favor him with a gl8.l1C9 which would make him tremble and cower away in the corner. However, one's parents are a great det- rimenit to the thlorough enjoyment of a nap in church. In my experience, they have usual- ly kept one eye on their daughter, and when she showed the slightest inclination of dozing off, they prodded her with their elbows, a procedure which I assure you is rather pain- ful at times. As a proper inducement to slumber, a lengthy, sonorous, highly uninteresting ser- mon is essential. One should not attempt to sleep until the sermon begins. Then, one should sit erect with an air of rapt attention and drop slowly oif to sleep Be sure that your head doesn't nod, for the congregation behind you must never know that you are anything but most deeply interested ,in the oratorical espounding which echoes through the church. It is very necessary that the nap and 'the sermon reach their finale simultaneously. 1 shall never forgelt the time the sermon ended first. Now I will confess that it flatters my egotism to be looked at and admired, but when the congregaution stood wnile I sat and slowly roused myself, I felt sixty-three pairs of eyes on me, and I frankly say that I found such steadfast admiration extremely embar- rassing. However, when the sermon is finished, I devote myself entirely to the services, and, if my head has not nodded too many times. nobody is the wiser except my pare-nts. -Lillian Wujek THE TRIALS OF ROUTINE Promptly at six-thirty every morning of the week with the exception of Saturday and Sunday, an alarm clock may be heard ring- ing in the north bedroom of a white bunga- low. Slowly the covers move and again all is quiet. Then the alarm gives its final warning and a 'tousled head appears from beneath the covers to see, if seeing is possible, if i't is really time to be getting up. When this has been verified, off come She covers and the sleepy one gets out onto the cold floor, stum- bles to the window to close iff. and stumbles back to the register to open it. After groping several times for the door she reaches the knob and then expects to open the door with- out hitting herself in the face when she is standing directly in its path. . , The little dear is fairly well awakened after thus hitting herself in the face. But to finish the process, she dashes cold water in her face and then proceeds to dress. Slip and -dress manage to go on backwards. When she is finally fully clothed, washed and the tous- led hair combed, three quarters of an hour has elapsed. Then follows a scramble for the breakfast table and breakfast which it is necessary to consume in lten minutes. She even eats break- fast accordlng to schedule, for at seven-twen- ty-five, she julmps up from the table, slams on her hat, struggles into her coat and ga- loshes and gathering up books and purse. bolts out the front door and up the street. A-r the corner she discovers, rattlebrained as she is, that she has forgotten her lunch, so she retraces her steps and hangs admitt.ance on the fronlt door. Once more she sets out on the dead run, this time lunch in hand determined to catch the bus which leaves the corner at 7:30. But as punishment for such forgetfulness the bus is already two blocks on its way. Then the next best thing to do is ,take the street car and walk up the hill. This she does and arrives at her locker at five minutes to eight, puffing like a steam engine. Wilth one last burst of energy she grabs the necessary text books and goes streak- ing down theqcorridor, her approach herald- ed by the tardy bell. A curse on a school that takes the liberty of demanding its students to be present for eighlt o'clock classes! 0 that Thoreau were here to right this dire wrong. All. hail the XValden Foul cabin and the carefree hours life in it offers. -Marian Marshall FLANDERFS FI E LD The poppies grow from year to year. Great Talker THE COLLEGE BOY I The night was an evening of splendor en- grossed in the fragrance of spring: Its beauty was that of such greatness no other night could bring. But its silence was suddenly broken by the sound of an engine roar, As a college boy came riiding-- Ridingi- riding-- A college boy came riding, up to his sweet- heart's door. III Over the pavement he rabtled and halted his Ford at the curb, But the owner of the mansion with horn he dared not disturb. He whistled a tune as a signal, and who should come runnin: out But the banker's bright-eyed daughter, Tess, the banker's daughter Denning a bright red jacket. she hailed him wlith a shout. But we must hasten onwa.rd,- Let us hasten onward. We sh-all n-ow hasten onward. before he learns of this. V He pressed his foot on the starter: the car began to shake! This showed that the engine had started: 'twas time to release the brake. As the car resumed its movement. it started down the street, And it faded into the darkness! The still black depths of the darkness' And the flgucres were merged in the darkness, as each heart madly quickened its beat. He craned and peered in the darkness, and the hours crawled by like years, Till, dead on the stroke of midnight, Stark, on the stroke of midnight, The sound of a car approaching encouraged his waiting ears, VIII Put-put in the evening's silence: put-put in 'the echoing night! Loutder it came and louderg then flashed a ,brilliant light! A Ford drew up to the curbing: he saw the lights go out, Then he sneaked outside in the moonlight, He gripped his gun in the moonlight He Hred a shot in the moonlght to put the youth to rout. IX Out of the oar Tess vaulgted, warning her friend to flee, And ran swiftly 'round to the back door for whose lock she had a key. One glance o'er her shoulder assured her her hero was safe, As she saw hdm speed down the roadway, 'In his auto down the roadway, In the moonlighlt down the roadway like a window-breaking walt. For instance, some person with an observant eye might see much that is interesting and unique in the little German metropolis called Peru. I suppose spring in Peru is quite similar to spring in Spring Valley or Cedar Point, bwt surely there must be something that distinguishes springtime in Peru from springtime in all other places. Around the middle of April the Peruvians come ount ot hibernation and begin to peek around corners for a glimpse er the flrst robin. Then the men of the families against their better judgment, shoulder digging forks and enter the garden plot for the annual struggle with the soil. The fair sex also be- gins spring house-cleaning alt this time, and since acquiring a goodly number of blisters in beating rugs, there is no love in my heart for the unknown villian who invented spring housecleaning. If digging gardens and beat- ing rugs were the only tasks to be performed in the spring season, it would not be so bad: but this year some gracious neighbor, who keeps a horse, dumped a generous load of manure in the yard to be used for garden fertilizer, After spreading the fertilizer over the ground and spading it under with dubious success. I was almost ready to repudiate the old axiom Love thy neighbor. Throughout the whole fair cilty, every man who is big enough to use a spade is similarly employed. The old German burghers fondly tend their cabbage plants with visions of luscious sauer- kraut and weiners dancing before their eyes but there is some doubt as to Whether the sauerkraut will recompense them for their strenuous efforts, Living up to their German traditions, the Peruvians also plant a pro- digious number of flower seeds. This means more manual labor for the already over- worked scions of the vari-ous households. I envy the snow-bound Eskimos when I think ot their freedom from gardening operations. PADEREWSKI ln Orchestra Hall one November night two years ago, Paderewski was billed to give a concert with the Chicago Symphony Orches- tra. We had traveled over a hundred miles to hear him, and now the time was at hand. In sheer ecstacy I glued my eyes on the door through which this master would emerge. The knob was moving-the door was slowly opening-the entire assembly arose to give so mighty a man iitting welcome! Thrills of excitement and expectation ran throutgh my body and then he entered, Bow- ing repeatedly he seated himself. I re-seated myself and with a thumping heart I listened to the great Paderewski. -Evangeline Harth SHADOWS In fantastic forms they waver In irregular shapes Forbidding and horrible As if some black monster For a sinister reason Had blotted out the light. COBVVEBS Finer than the finest glass More delicate than light The master workmanship of some vagrant fairy Who had fashioned a net to catch the dew For the fairy king to drink. STORM First you feel its hot,. close breath Then a swish of chilled air As the storm rushes by With a myriad raindrops for swift lilttle feet. -Billy Christopher A SPRING RAIN lt washed away the dust that stood Upon the lifeless streets: And then a poet walked and thrilled To the sharp, staccato beat. It took away the dullness Of the bare brown ground, And rested its sweet tapping On every grassv mound. A school girl headed homeward With two books under her arm: She knew that rain was useful, But for her it had no charm. The bright blue of her English Faded on 'the Laltin's red, And so she didn't notice The flowers in their bed. Of course opinions differ, But life is just that way: Some always see the dreary side, And others see rain play. -Geniveve Knutson COMIC STRIPS Mickey Mouse ..-...-- -------- -T 01111 Festa Etta Katt ------,-,-, ,,,,,.,-- J ean Eliel Butte,-cup -,,,,, ,....,., . - Calvin Lange Dumb Dora ............. - Mares' HBHSOH Harold Teen ............- --- J0l1l1 Sffell Lillums ------ ------- --,- , , - ROSS Novak ' Dorothy Weiland Moon Mullins .......... Well I have. You feel especially bad if you have made a blunder in the presence of your friends. The thing sort of bothers you and every time you think of it, which is often, you feel hot all over wi-th a disgust and a feeling of something near to shame. You feel that you can't face your friends again because you did make a fool of yourself and they know you did. You resolve not to 'think of it anymore but in a few minutes you go all through the process and when you linally do see you,r friends you're in such a state that your actions would label you an oxtender of the law or as some equally grievous act. -Florence Stevenson A DISAPPOINTMENT I had looked forward to Christmas vaca- tion from the time that school began ln Fall with Just one main hope-that I'd get to go to the Country Clwb Christmas Dinner Dance. 1 thought about it all day long and at night I would have visions of myself at the dance having a most emoyable time. It was all too lovely thinking about it! I bought the dress I planned on wearing long beforehand so that I would be all ready to go when the invitation came. The evening of the dance grew near-I knew that I wasn't to get to go--oh, what a sad feeling that was! It seemed as if the bottom of everything had fam-in mit.. I ran't remember of ever being so sad and -depressed-but then I thought of Emerson's COII1lD6DS3,lZl0l1 and of the bal- ancing force of everything, mentioned there- in, and I want to thank English IV plus which made it compulsory for me to read that essay as it certainly helped me to recover from my sadness. I believed in Emerson and so I started out to look for the jolly, haDDY time that was coming to balance this sad, de- pressed one, -Catherine Herbolsheimer I GET WET When I left the house there was only a slight drizzle and as I had on rubbers and a new rain coat I had no fear of rain. I had not been go-ne long when the rain turned into a regular downpour. The air was co'lder too. 1 soon discovered -that the water ran off my rain coat onto my legs, a fact that caused extreme discomfort. I can feel those wet, clinging stockings yet. They seemed as if stuck to my legs with glue-. And the more i-t rained, the tighter they got. My shoes were beginning to get full, and the water squisnea around with a disagreeable sensation. When I reached home rr seemed to' me that the water had. penetrated my skin and refused to come out. -Florence Stevenson A SENIOR'S SOLILIQUY Like old Father Time and like Baby New Year We pass out the door as new Freshies appear, Of course we are sure of our excellent brains And smile in contempt at their forth-coming pains, For well we remember those four years of grief And bid school farewell with a sigh of relief.
