Four men left and two new men came on board before our return to Norfolk. The men managed to keep busy both before and dur- ing the deployment. Before leaving Norfolk about 1,000 charts Qmany in duplicateb and 200 navigational publications had to be checked to be sure that they were the latest editions and were in good condition. A large supply of logs and forms had to be on board and ready for use. Navigational instruments also had to be in good repair. During the cruise LA SALLE entered 14 different ports, some several times. She dropped anchor 48 times, went to special sea and anchor detail 106 times and highline or replenishment detail 26 times. LA SALLE was underway over 1,480 hours while steaming over 15,561 nautical miles Qthat is about 16,895 land milesb. Over 150 charts and maps were used which if put end to end would extend about 600 feet. The ships position was determined more than 7,170 times by taking more than 25,000 visual bear- ings and radar ranges, 560 loran readings and 302 celestial sights.
