.AIR DEPART E T V Division has 40 men assigned, with LCDR Drake as department head, QAir BossJ, and LTJ G Smith as division officer, aviation fuels and flight deck officer. Our leading petty offi- cer is ABH1 Underwood. While deployed on the Med cruise we em- barked a UH-2A helicopter, from HC-4, homeported at NAS Lakehurst, New Jersey. All operational commitments could not have been met without the outstanding performance of the helo crew and the two pilots, LT Foss, and LT Peterson. Upon visiting some ofthe choice ports in the Med all hands can truthfully state that they had a good time, but there is no place like good ol' USA, Of primary interest on the homefront, AN Kueb1er's wife gave birth to a baby girl. 011 transferring of men during the Med de- ployment we lost AN Schuchardt to Aviation Metalsmith School in Tennessee. AN Lopez was transferred to the Naval Hospital in Rota for a knee operation. At last report he was doing fine. Departing the ship for CivLant were AN Love, AN Nesbit, and ADRAN Shoupe. During our slack time on the cruise a couple of new faces appeared on the flight deck, compliments of AN Gregoire and LTJ G Smith. Namely our Tilly Gator and our fuel in- jected f?y Road Runner . Our work time consisted of busying ourselves on the Flight Deck, we launched the helo for fr e que nt mail runs, personnel transfers, medevacs, other various emergency evolu- tions, and the Holy helo for transferring the two chaplains for divine services on other ships and for marines training on the beach. Replenishment of stores and supplies,uti1iz- ing CH-46D helicopters from the USS CON- CORD and the USS SYLVANIA, was accom- plished largely through the efficient direc- tion of the Air Department personnel. Although the Med deployment proved to be interesting and enjoyable, no single event that took place during the cruise could match the excitement when the word ShiftColors was passed upon our return to Norfolk. i sf
