Man the Well Deck and Ballast Detail! At times it seemed like those were the only words the' Boatswain Mate of the Watch knew how to say. We spent a good portion of our five month deployment in the confines of our well deck. Always a dangerous assignment, 2nd Division seems to handle the job with real skill. When we weren't handling boats in the well, other things seemed to pop up with little warning. Refueling and highlining were a big part of the cruise. Sometimes we were lucky enough to have our Marine friends pitch in and give us a hand, but this wasn't always the case. ' Only a handful of the division were trained enough for this deployment, but when it was over, every man could truly be called a fine sailor. In addition, the division has a fine record while on liberty, which most of us en- joyed as much as possible. Now we're back in our homeland and the men are trying their best to acquaint themselves with what must seem like a foreign port. But as usual, we're very confident that 2nd Divi- sion will succeed without many complications . BMC W, Davis Ensign J.B, Watkins Second Division Officer BMSN J , Langenbach BM3 A, LoPresti AN R. Mount 31 Manned and Ready THIRD DIVISION AIR ACTION PORT LOAD HOPPERS COM MENCE FIRE CEASE FIRE BORE RE PORTS These words may seem strange to many LA SALLE crewmen, but not to us of third division Throughout MED 3 69 these commands echoed within our heads many times They started a chain of events which lead to breaking of the peaceful quiet of being at sea and changing it to the loud roar which made OLD SALLY shake from stem to stern. , Third Division is made up of two different ordnance rates, Gunner's Mates and Fire Control Technicians. Gunner's Mates are responsible for the oper- ation and maintenance of LA SALLE's guns, which are many. They range from the large 3 50 cal. gun mounts to the small 45 cal. pistols. However large or small they may be, all must be ready to go into action at a mo- ments notice Fire Control Technicians are responsible for the operation and maintenance of LA SALLE's gunnery radar and computer guidance systems that feed electrical information which auto matically tells the mount where to shoot in order to hit the target A During MED 3 69 LA SALLE's guns fired over 1500 rounds of three inch ammo at nu- merous targets ranging from airplane towed sleeves at Malta to the hillsides of Navp1iO1'1, Greece. Under the direction of Rest1eSS Guns Barry and Gun Repair Reid, LA SALLE's guns had their best day off Malta, shooting up 3 aircraft-towed sleeves. We spent many hours before and after General Quarters keeping everything in working or- der, but all was not work. Third Division also saw her share of well-earned liberty in the MED.
