Schoening For BM3 Birnbaum, SN R., Shoemaker, SN Blackwell, SN Collier, SN Damewood, SA Bearden, and LTJG Grant, the high point of the landings was the day we took the Mike boats for an assist beaching exercise and ended up spending the night on the beach at Porto Scudo. C-rats, standing 1 hour boat and fire watches through the night, and sleeping in a drizzling rain snuggling close to our rubber tire-boat fender fire climaxed the campout. Birnbaum's Mike boat gave out on one occasion and started drifting on the rocks, but Damewood made the rescue. Another highlight was the day the Commodore 's Gig went adrift and BM3 Chase and SN Brinson towed it back through heavy swells. In Spain, one of our more illustrious members Went through a revolving door the wrong way. Under the strong direction of BM1 Garris, we were at our best during compets - scoring a 96.6 and 94.3 on highlines and hitting Oscar With the first kapok and the first SA W. S11-Vis, BM3 K. We finished out the cruise by painting out the starboard side at Valencia. ,.1.,.-,.,. f. 7, 1,7-A .1-5 -. -TU --lf Q, -T-ew.-cw-,vs

Man the Well Deck and Ballast Detail! At times it seemed like those were the only words the' Boatswain Mate of the Watch knew how to say. We spent a good portion of our five month deployment in the confines of our well deck. Always a dangerous assignment, 2nd Division seems to handle the job with real skill. When we weren't handling boats in the well, other things seemed to pop up with little warning. Refueling and highlining were a big part of the cruise. Sometimes we were lucky enough to have our Marine friends pitch in and give us a hand, but this wasn't always the case. ' Only a handful of the division were trained enough for this deployment, but when it was over, every man could truly be called a fine sailor. In addition, the division has a fine record while on liberty, which most of us en- joyed as much as possible. Now we're back in our homeland and the men are trying their best to acquaint themselves with what must seem like a foreign port. But as usual, we're very confident that 2nd Divi- sion will succeed without many complications . BMC W, Davis Ensign J.B, Watkins Second Division Officer BMSN J , Langenbach BM3 A, LoPresti AN R.
