The Marines ashore sloshed for twelve days through waterlogged roads and fields and in- numerable vehicles became stuck in huge mud holes and had to be pulled out. The first sneak attack exercises were held and LA SALLE was one of several ships in the squadron which were sunk by the enemy UDT swimmers. And, of course, on 16 January, LA SALLE 's own Super Squids hit Blue Beach with great success ifor those who like Bud- weiserj. LVTs in Wave 1 moving down the assault lane. DU nmamv D mm FE nummauia D ahah aan Elisa Wave 6 charging Red Beach at battle speed. WEDLHQDDU Experimentation characterized the Navplion landing. After conducting a conventional landing in the inky darkness of early morning, two additional landings were conducted over the horizon . While the transport vessels waited ten miles off shore, the waves steamed in to the beach under the watchful eye of LA SA'LLE's helo. In addition, LA SALLE successfully conducted an experimental underway launch of LVT's at varying speeds. All operations were extremely successful. At the completion of this last exer cise LA SALLE made for Athens but with 300 guests. Marines from the CAMBRIA rode Sally to Athens since their ship had made port several days before for repairs.
