After a hard fought victory over Purcell, and a loss to Elder. the Lancers pulled themselves together to tie state ranked and undefeated Kettering Alter, and then finished with very impressive wins over St. Xavier. and undefeated and state ranked Colerain. The Lancers were led by a tenacious defense and a powerful running attack. The defense was led by Mike Cross and Steve La Fary at tackles. Dan Welling at middle guard, Brain Krueger and Dick Bullerat ends. Jim Kenning at linebackers and Mark Brown at defensive back. The offensive was led by one of the finest offensive lines in the school's history, led by Tony Bare at center, Vince Hartman at guard, Jeff Schneider and Ed Vorderbrueggen at tackles and Mike Jester at tight end. The offensive backs were led by Mike Schneider, the first running back to play at La Salle. Mike broke all existing rushing and scoring records at La Salle and became the first runner to rush over 1000 yards, f118'D. Mike was also the first player in the school team to be selected to the lst team all state team. Overall . the team playing the toughest schedule in the school's history was disappointed that it did not have a better win-loss record but was very successful in many areas and is now considered one of the top grid- iron powerhouses in Southwest Ohio and one of the upcoming state pow- ers. 120 No. 1 signs go up with win over X v XWL Touchdown against X at Riverfront. Although the Reserve record was a disappointing 3 and 4 the offensive explosiveness of the team was obvious to the fans. The Reserve Lancers out gained their opponents by over thIee hundred and fifty yards for the season, but in two of their losses the loss of numerous fumbles caused their downfall. The last three games of the season seem to show the team's gradual improve- ment. Wins over Purcell 42-0 and Roger Bacon 24-0 led to the final game which ended with the Lancers at the 6 yard line of Moeller in heartbreaking loss 14-8. In the opinion of Coach Barlag and Ginn the future of La Salle Football looks excellent with this fine group of Sophomores adding to the Varsity of 1976. 7.24 1:; . The first G.C.L. game against Moeller, ended in the first and only tie of the season. The frosh suffered two losses to Elder and St. Xavier, both scores 8 to nothing. The season ended on a good note with two wins. The G.C.L. record was 2-2-1. The defense is the strongest factor, only allowing 16 points total in G.C.L. and other games. - L - ' .5 Freshmen get together before practice. 'w; h- ' a HTTOM; John Hoffman. Joe Nieman. Coming out of retire- ment to coach again this year, MI. George Dir: got the team to start practice early in June and run all summer on his ' q ' L.S.D. program - tLong Slow Distancet. II paid off for most ' of the troops as times fell and competition was fierce. The Lancers, non-Iated at the outset, worked their Way to a 10111 place rating by the lst of October. Outstanding running by Jay Huey paced the Varsity at every meet. On again off again performances by Sr. Tom Wagner helped out. but the mainstays of the Varsity were 115. Ron Appling, Paul Ernst, Jack Bresnen, Mike Heckler and Rob Schweitzer. The Reserve Lancers. led by Steve Happy Toes Groh, Kevin Wottle Horgan, and Tim I only run for exercise Breen, had an excellent season. The 4th. 51h, and 6th spots were filled by Ray O'Connell, Tom Reckner, and Bob Dan- gel. With those sophomores. plus returning juniors, it should be a great season in '76. I29 Predicted to Place Last; Win a Co-Championship! Cagers Surprise G.C.L. A young but gutty group of Lancer Basketballers surprised their G. C. L. foes and other Southwestern Ohio teams by cap- turing a co-champion title in the extremely tough league. They compiled a 15-5 record which included impressive vic- tories over Elder, Purcell , and McNicholas. This was the third time in four years that Mr. Bill Cady has led the Lancers to a championship in the G.C.L. Led by an outstanding Sophomore guard, Ted Duggins. with outstanding performances by Junior center Gary Woeste, Senior forward Scott Smith, Junior forward Bob SchIoeck, and Junior guard Tom Junker, this group amazed the basket- ball scene with their intense and confident play. The Lancers found themselves in many very close battles throughout the season but managed to turn most of these encounters into vic- tories. If there ever was a group of athletes who should be proud of their achievement of coming out of nowhere and putting together a very successful season - it is the 1976 LaSalle bas- ketball squad. Active in LaSalle The LaSalle High School Alumni ' Association displays its loyalty in many ways as it upholds the direc- tional guidance outlined in its Consti- tution: To promote religious, social and athletic activities; fraternal and educational pursuits. The annual Homecoming Festivities are coordi- nated with the Student Government and are highlighted by the Stag after the football game and Homecoming Dance - both well attended by the alums. Throughout the winter there is a variety of winter sports organized by the Alumni which includes a basket- ball league and a nautilus weight-lift- ing program. Summertime means softu ball. Our Softball League boasts 36 teams and is headed by John 30556 '66. Tremendously successful, the league has brought recognition and promi- nence to LaSalle from many area high schools. Each year the Senior Honor Award is given to a student the alumni feels typifies the Lancer. A program to pro- vide financial assistance to students is the goal of the Football Program which the Alumni also sponsors. The efforts of Steve Grote 71 and his staff produce one of the finest football programs in the state. . The distributions of miniature foot- - . . balls at Homecoming is always pop- ular. The Alumni Band annually performs at the haIf-time of the Homecoming game and has held outdoor concerts. The cul- mination of these ideas was a mathematical society being formed at LaSalle. This society was set up so that top math students could have fun. and in the process, prepare for state and national math competitions. When it was finally formed, it was christened MATHLETICS. The league was divided into two conferences, the Irra- tional and Rational Conferences, each of which had five teams of six men with names such as Ellipsoids, Null Sets, and Derivatives.
