MI. Ferd Flick, the 1974 LaSalle Cross Country team faced a challenge. Prac- tices were held twice per week beginning in late July and increased in frequency once school had begun. The season started out relatively lackluster before improvement became evident. Senior Kevin Burrill took the lead and finished 5th at the Spartan Invitational. As a team at Sycamore, the Lancer Junior Varsity finished 9th out of 1'7 teams. Individual recognition went to Ron Appling who finished 9th out of 115 runners. The following week, the Junior Varsity finished in a respectable 9th place tie at the Elder Relays. In a dual meet with Aiken, at Mt. Airy Forest, LaSalle came out on the short end of a 38-23 score. Individual distinction went to Kevin Burrill who finished 1st. The following week. LaSalle turned around and defeated Milford at the winner's course. Individual dis- tinction went to Ron Appling and Jack Bresnen who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Probably the highest point of the season was seeing Kevin Burrill qualify in the sectionals at Princeton for the district meet at Dayton, Ohio. In Dayton Kevin finished short of qualifying for the State com- petition. Next season LaSalle can look forward to a veteran team which will be led by II. lay Huey. Star at Mt. H . Invitational. One point losses to Roger Bacon and Elder, one touchdown losses to Moeller and Dayton Alter and field goal losses to St. Xavier and Oregon Clay proved most frustrating. On the bright side, the Lancers were rated number one in the city Enquires poll for the first time in the school history after convincing wins over Withrow, Princeton. and Western Hills. Leading this year's team was Steve Scheid who was voted Most Valuable Player, Best Defensive Lineman, and Sticker of the Year at the annual football banquet, along with receiving a scholarship to Dayton University. The offensive line, under Coach Bill Felchner, did an out- standing job behind the leadership of Tom Foertsch, who was selected Best Offensive Lineman and has received an appoint- ment to the Air Force Academy along with Stan Wellbtock. Jim Hautman, the first player in La Salle history to be selected in the annual Ohio State All Star Football Game and is also the first to receive a scholarship to Notre Dame . along with John Glankler. who will attend Duke University, had fine seasons. Coach Bob Freemal's defensive backs were led by Rick Reck- ner who was selected Best Defensive Back and who will attend Murray State. Other awards given at the banquet were: Best Offensive Back - Mike Schneider, Most Improved Senior - Steve Sontage, Most Improved Junior - Dan Welling, and the Lancer Award - Tim Brenner. Outgoing co-captains Steve Scheid and Mike Kirchner will be replaced by captains Mike Cross, Mike Jester, Greg Niehaus and Mike Schneider. A. , ,. LaSalle's varsity soccer team opened its season with a good start, faltered for one game, and came on strong to finish lst in the G.C.L. The Lancers then went imo tournament play by knocking off two teams, but losing to the state champs, Finneytown. Greg Cross and Joe Giesting provided almost all the offensive power for the Lancers this season. Greg scored 12 goals and Joe amazingly shot in 20 . They were also helped by Paul Kroner, Kevin Sueberling. and Dan Cross. The halfback positions were outstandingly played by Paul Hoblitzell, Tim Van Driessche, and Dave Stier. There were several groups this year. Also the retreat was for two days and one night as compared to the previous thIee days and two nights. The Retreat was a unique experience for most Seniors. They found out things about themselves and their friends that they never knew existed. Their personalities came out in role playing and in the football and basketball games. It was a good experience for all. But as life is, all good things come to an end and most people went back to the original state after a couple of weeks. Most people thought it was going to be a prayer service, but much to their surprise , it wasn't . It was a personal encounter. Where you get into small groups and talk about yourself and your problems. And the other members of your group talked back to you. Another rejection. Meditating in the Chapel. . 1; 17v Lam. .... The play was a change of pace from the likes of BECKET and ADVIS AND CONSENT; it was a light comedy whose only purpose was to entertain. And the cast fulfilled this purpose admirably. BOB BUCHTMAN, in his first role at LaSalle, played the part of Claude Jones. science teacher turned goofy astrologer, to the full. Other major roles were filled by BRIAN HEM- PLE, TIM VAN DRIESSCHE, DALE SCHUSTER, JACK GREINER. JOAN INDERHEES, and ANN PIERSON. Over half the cast was made up of talented freshmen and sophomores who promise a. fine future for LaSalle's stage tradition. .. .A null - Tim V. and Ptolemy B. Background Choreography Tim V. as the Coach. 28 The Lancet Basketball team finished the season with a dis- appointing 4-16 record, including two tournament games at U.C. Considering the many obstacles the team had to over- come, the toughness of the schedule and player inexperi- ence, to name two, the record is not indicative of the poten- tial on the court. With the heavy graduation loss of last year's eight top players, this year seemed destined to be a rebuilding one. With more football players on the team than any other previ- ous year the team opened the season sluggishly . It took the personnel on the team time to become accustomed to each other's playing style . Looking toward next season, Mr. Cady commented, Pur- cell and LaSalle will have the most returning players next year. This year the players gained valuable experience and, with the addition of some talented reserves. next year's team looks very encouraging. Resv. B. Schroeck goes up with opponent. Some may consider this a little sub-par in comparison with previous teams, but not Coach Broxter- man. This team was picked last by most coaches in the early season predictions, added Coach Broxterman, but it fine ished 8rd in the league and highlighted the season by beating Moeller twice, Purcell twice, and District Champion Elder twice by shutout scores of 2-0 and 3-0. The Lancers closed out G. C.L. play with a 6-4 record , and according to the Coach, a few breaks here and there could have given us an exceptional season. Other 1975 bright spots mentioned by Coach Broxterman included: 1. Soph. Bob Schroeck. considered one of the best young pitchers in the league, pitched one of the shutouts against Elder. 2. Expansion of baseball program by playing Alpena and Bed- ford, Michigan teams and posting impressive victories t8-5, 21-2 in a doubleheader and 17-49. 3. Impressive team statistics: 123 runs scored to opponents 81; team batting average of .262; 104 team RBI's; 26 dou- bles, 10 triples, '7 home runs, 97 walks, 27 stolen bases. 3 ? 3 , axis: . Resv . M. SEASON'S STATS Lancer Cagers, coming off two straight G.C.L. crowns and graduating the first eight players last sea- son, found the going quite tough. However this team had some very unique qualities about it. It was quarter- backed by a Freshman guard, Ted Duggins, who had a 3.5 assist average per game. A Sophomore forward, Gary Woeste. led the team in shooting percentage with better than a 47070 average. Scott Smith, a junior cen- ter, led the team in scoring with 13. 9 points per game and also the number of rebounds grabbed. A Senior standout, guard Jim Schmitz led the team in free throw percentage with 72070 and also received the MOST VAL- UABLE PLAYER AWARD for his outstanding play during the season. With these players and other hard working but inexperienced Juniors and Seniors, the Lancers Were most competitive and gave the very best teams in the city all they could handle. Certainly this young team will be heard from in the coming seasons and we are most anxious to see the fruits of this team. H3 Reserves Play 500 Ball Frosh Do Well in Tourneg The Reserve Basketball Team posted a winning season with a 10- 8 record. Coach Freenal's charges had their ups and downs but hung in there on the close games. Behind the fine shooting of BOB SCHROECK and BOB GAGNON, and the tenacious defense of TOM IUNKER the Reserves fought and finessed their way as a cohesive unit to win the tough ones. CHRIS CASSAN was tauted as this year's floor leader and playmaker. The rebounding chores were handled by TONY ROEHRICH and JIM SUNDERMAN. Next year's Varsity should get some reliable help from such a scrappy, well coached Reserve team. fauna Tony Roehrich blocks shot. Our mile relay team of Kelly Cramer. Mark Brown. Bill Holt. and Tom Wirth placed 16th in the state with a time of 3:29 . Earlier in the year, the Varsity Track team placed 2nd in the Forest Park Invitational and looked ahead to a very successful season. They then placed 9th out of 42 teams in the K of C Relays and third in the Best of the West track meet. A disheartening 4th place in the G. C .L. track meet didn't discourage the Varsity heaven. They came back the following week and took 2nd in the Cincy Sectionals. with 18 making the district meet. LaSalle came off with '7 points. 3rd out of all other Cincinnati teams, and a state qualifying mile relay team. Various records were broken this year as LaSalle's Varsity Track Team was voted tenth in the final city poll. The 480 yard shuddle hurdle relay team of Mike Carr. Greg Schrenker, Rick Reckher. and Mark Hartinger set a new record with a time of 1:01 . 2. Other record breakers were: T. Foensch, Tom Wirth, Dale Schibi. Mark Brown. Dale Schibi was voted by his fellow teammates both the Most Improved Trackster and the Most Valuable Trackster. Kevin Burrill was voted as the Best Distance Runner while Kelly Cramer was voted as the Best Sprinter. Mike Schneider was voted as the Best Field Per- former.
