Finishing 51h or better in all its meets, the young Lancers were paced by juniors Kevin Burrill, who had the best varsity record of 10:51 over a two mile course, and Tim Doherty. They showed the most consistent times. Senior Tim Doyle also had a respectable season. On the Reserve level the Lancers also had a good season. In their first year of competition in the G. C. L. they finished 5th. Leading the Reserves was Freshman Ron Appling who took the mom first place fin- ishes. Kelly Cramer held the best Reserve time 11:28. The team is looking forward to a very successful season next year. Gus Holthaus jogs along. Appling and Cramer strain in the STRETCH! A WILD Running Season 7 ; 7 Tim Doyle coming up. P. Heme and K. In Coach Steve Rasso's 6th year as head coach of LaSalle's Varsity Football, and 5th .500 + season in a row, the mightt Lancers produced an excellent 7-3 record for the 73 season. The 3 losses came in the form of a one point heartbreaker to St. X, a humiliating 13 point slaughter by Oak Hills. and a disappointing 4 point defeat from Moeller. On the other side of the coin, however, were the 12-6 defeat of West High and the tremendous 14-0 obliteration of Elder's not so mighty Panters. Leading the team to those and the other 5 wins was senior Paul Klug who was voted Most Valuable Player, Best Defen- sive Back. and Sticker of the Year at the annual Football Banquet. Mike Schneider. Stan Wellbrock. and Tim Brenner also did a super job as underclassmen. Mike Schneider makes one of many T.D . 's. Schneider was named Best Offensive Back while Wellbrock received the Khans Back of the Week award for his peIfOIm- an'ce in the Elder Game. Tim Rueve's cool ballhandling ena- bled the option offense to operate smoothly and very effi- ciently. The offensive line did an outstanding job behind the leadership of senior Mike LaRosa who was named Best Offenw sive Lineman. Jim Hautman, Steve Scheid, Craig GIeisl, and Tom Foertsch had a very good season as juniors with John Glankler named as Most Improved Junior. Defensive secondary turned in a fine year behind the efforts of seniors Paul King, Mike ShIoeck, Dave Arand, and the capable juniors like Rick Rechner. Mike Kirchner, and Andy Schoeling. Other awards given at the banquet were: Best Defensive Back - Randy Berding, Most Improved Senior - Dan Flynn, tand the Lancer Award given to Tim McCarthy. i r F i t i r . In a year when real financial support was needed the Lancer Commu- nity came through. The Senior class set the pace with MI. Pieper's homeroom . The Freshmen finished second making a real my and were probably responsible for the Seniors doing so well. MI. Kennedy's class aced out Bro. Paul's class and even overpowered the Seniors of Mr. Pieper's class. Tom Hasselbeck led the Sophomores and helped Mr. Canning's homeroom lead the Sophomore department. The Juniors fin- ished third in the School with Mr. Barlag and Mr. Broxter- man's classes selling junk to jewels to finish one and two in the Junior department. School leaders included; Bob Dorsey, Tom Hasselbeck, Dan Wissel, Mark Bollin, George Kam- mer, Mark Maly, Barry Taylor, Bill Kolb, and Mark San- ders. In the Hamilton County Soccer Tournament LaSalle managed to be one of the quartet finalist teams. We feel that our efforts were very well rewarded . 21 Homecoming Dance Kathy Isle: was chosen as this year's Homecoming Queen. Apparently, the stu- dents saw that Kathy was a personable and lovely young lady. Kathy desired this honor and rightly deserves it. She realized that it pays to be, involved in activities as she has been thmugh her high school years. A lot of students around LaSalle really respect Kathy because she just doesn't talk. She acts. The other five candi- dates were: Beth Karches, Sue Dodd, Carol Huevelman, Kim Russo, and Cindy Schreibeis. 24 Senior Retreats As Loyola Retreat House in Milford was approached by the bus from LaSalle High School, the students aboard wondered what the mysterious place would do to them. When the ses- sions there had begun almost ever one removed their inv1sible masks an exposed their true selves. It is unfortu- nate that the atmosphere did not exist outside of the Retreat House . Within a week the groups were back to their old tricks. The experience was memora- ble, and tends to prove that Utopia is not impossible. I .Ilnnl. ililxlnit.l Fall Plag Becke+ For its fall production this year the drama department chose the modern classic BECKET. Mr. Sauerbrey had been holding this script for a number of years wait- ing for the cast and the time to be tight to do it justice. The results proved that the time was right. It would be impossible to give credit to each person whose inestimable con- tribution helped to make this show a fine success. The cast. to a man, did an outstanding job. The crews measured up to the most demanding, technical show the school has attempted. The two leads deserve special mention. Bob BrunneI who played the role of Henry 11 created one of the most memorable Characters that has appeared on the stage. Bob has appeared in every show during his four years here: as Henry he reached a real peak. Steve Knapp's portrayal of the sensitive, strong. troubled Becket was moving and real; his character was one that the audience could iden- tify with and find in him much of themselves. Fine performances were given by Dan Mecklenborg, Dale Schuster, Jim Nunn, Cornelius Bieliauskas . . . the list could go on for a long time. So once more the LaSalle auditorium was transformed , and the audience could experience a new reality: hopefully a reality that would make them more aware of themselves and each other. 28 Cagers Capture G.C.L. Wi+h The 1973-74 Lancer Basketball team compiled the best record of any LaSalle team ever. with a tremendous mark of 19-3111 the always tough G.C.L. This team won the G.C.L. title for the second straight year and captured the 5th annual Enquirer City Championship This Championship team was led by Captain Steve Ruberg and 6'8 Joe Sunderman, who both W111 certainly be missed next year. The rest of the starters were: Jim Comarata, Matt Hils, and Bob Jennings. The top three substitutes were: Rick Heidorn, Mark Naehring, and Mark Meyer. Alas! A11 Sen- lOIS. The Lancers beat State champ Elder twice during the sea- son, and was also the first team to defeat St. Xavier on their home court since 1969 . The Lancers started their regular sea- son with ten straight wins, including victories over Elder, Moeller, Bacon. and others. Then came a loss to St. Xavier, a victor over Elder, for the second straight time in the sea- son, folirowed by a disappointing one point loss to Moeller. The Lancers ended their regular season with five straight wins and a record of 16-2. The last five wins were by 20 points or more. The Lancers were seeded number 1 in the district tour- ney. In the tournament the Lancers beat Glen Este, Withrow , and Western Hills before losing in the finals to Elder by 2 in double overtime . Steve Ruberg and Joe Sunderman were elected to the first G. C.L. and City All Stars. Rick Heidorn, Matt Hils, and Mark Naehring were awarded honorable mention in the city All Star voting. Coach Bill Cady was voted Coach of the Year in the G . C.L . for the second straight season by his fellow coaches. Coach Cady was also chosen as the Coach to lead the West All Stars against the East. This year's record of 19-3 raises Mr. Cady's lifetime won lost percentage to over . 750. He has been teaching and coaching for 1'7 years. The concert consisted of songs such as, The Little Drummer Boy. an Old English Christmas. The team's dual match record was 4-0-1V The matmen captured the Forest Park Tournament and also took the Southwest Catholic'Tournament. LaSalle also placed runner-up in tournaments as the GCL, Sectional, and Glen Este Invi- rational. There were many individual stars on this year's team. The standouts included Rick Reardon, Jeff House, Greg Burns, Jim Tebbe, Bob Bass and Steve Scheid . all district qualifiers. G AI South Pacific Marching Band Swim Team Does Well Individually This was the fourth year for the La Salle High School Swimming Team. The 73-74 record was three wins and ten losses. This record shows that swimming at La Salle is yet to get off the ground. The overall lack of experience accounts for this season's record . On an individual basis there were several outstanding swimmers: Mark Schmidt - Sophomore, broke the school record in the 100 yd. backstroke 0:03. 3L and scored the highest number of points. Other highpoint scorers were: Charlie Hicks, Mike Ranz. Joe Islet. Jeff Leahy. Steve Wolf, Tom Tasset, Tim Doyle and Rick Berling, who all earned their varsity letter. Upcoming freshmen are Mike Hofmann, Jeff Keller, and Paul Rie- del . The divers were a bright spot this year. Scot TIefdel', Senior. won the G.C.L. , The West Sectional, The South-West Dis- trict and the State Meet. Scot honored La Salle with its first state championship . Tom Young, also a senior. took second in the G. C.L. and the West Sectional, and was fifth in the District and the State. Two divers to look for next year are Dave Ttefzger and Dan O'Hearn. Both showed their mettle during the regular season and placed ninth and twelfth in the West Sec- tional . -; 3 .a 3: Tennis Team Swings w: , L a . ... 132... -$.-, -' ' - . $ ' m . x , , ' ' wx ' n...;; .. h n . r m ' 7V . :5 Irglef-J .1, 1 ll - M31. The team has dealt defeats to as highly touted teams as Elder, Purcell, and Wyoming, while taking it on the chin to Oak Hills and St. X. With their home court being Mt. Airy, the Lancers have walked away with four wins at home and six on the road . Experience guides the team paced by all-star elite Greg GIimme, who's afflu- ent backhand leaves his opponent's spellbound. Up to now , Greg has compiled a. record of 8-5 , and has been a steadying influence on the younger members of the team. Second singles position is held down by Tom Schlacter. His loose as a goose style leaves his opponents, and even his team. rolling on their sides. His famous comment of ya little jerk has left many Frosh teary-eyed and hysterical. His record is '7 -6. Third singles is taken by sophomore Jim Nunn . who takes the buff of all criticism from the all-star elite. His record stands at 11-2. Mike Kolodzik and Jim Fear make up the first doubles team , having a little trouble with their record of 7-6 , but managing to pick up valuable team points. The second doubles team of Greg Clingerman and Jumpin' Jack Spratt present a good combination found only in Hollywood or Marineland , and they combined for an 11-2 record . Meanwhile . the Reserves have been matched with some stiff competition and coming out on the short end of the stick. The Little Paklers hold a mediocre LhIee and two record so far. Their first match of the season. against Mr. Health. ended in victory as the Lancers posted wins by Jim Cappel, Marty Amschler, and Kurt Jansen. all three playing singles . In their next match against an easy Newport Cath. Reserve Team, Coach Francesconi decided only to play Frosh, but Newport brought some unexpected juniors and beat the fresh. Next, the Lancers were faced with a highly rated Sycamore team and lost, 1-4. with the only win coming from Jim Cappel. The Racqueteers then were matched with Newport Cath. 's Varsity and won with a little help from their own varsity. Steve Hoffman, Kan Wagner, and Jim Cappel won in singles, and Marty Amschler and Kurt Jansen won in doubles for a 4-1 victory. Their most recent match, against Oak Hills . was their third victory as still undefeated Jim Cappel won along with Kurt Jansen and Marty Amschler. Despite little recognition, several freshmen have really helped the team along . Outstanding among them are Mike Dodd, Scott Schaffer. and Ron Roemer. 41 42 Track Has a Greai Season: 3rd in G.C.L. ; - . ,. The Reserves, after a slow and dubi- us start. were able to organize their firepower and come back to win the .C.L. title . Both teams had tremendous individual batting and pitching records hich made them the champion teams they were. The varsity , with its' innu- lerable new records and the reserves, with their never-slacking performances, lade the 1973-74 season a fantastic one for Lancer baseball. R. The show is a brilliant combination of rollicking comedy and of love in the South Pacific during World War II. The cast, crew, and show band combined to do the work justice. Kathy Islet, La Salle's homecoming queen, played the role of Nellie Forbush with verve, vitality, and life; she was outstanding both as an actress and singer. Torn Klaine, in his first La Salle appearance, made the lonely Frenchman, Emile de Becque, come to life. Comedy was provided by many. Patti Schmitz played Bloody Mary, the conniving and lovable con-lady of the island, exceptionally well. Bob Brunner. in his last of eight straight LaSalle appearances, played Luther Billis. the Navy's answer to Bloody Mary: together with Stewpot Mark Maly and Professor Dale Schustet, he kept the audience and the stage rocking. Dan Meclenborg and Debbie Coling played the star crossed lovers, Lt. Cable and Liat. The show band was excellent. The sets cre- ated the South Pacific atmosphere. Despite Losing Record Reserves Show Some Promise for Future The reserve basketball team, despite a losing season; three losses in overtime . showed promise for the futute. The team's major problem was in shooting. MI. Freemal says, There was a lid on the basket, but they did well in the other phases of the game. Individually there are poten- tially five or six players. who with hard work and improvement in shoot- ing, could very easily contribute to the success of the varsity program. They started out poorly in the beginning of the season losing 4 out of 5 games, but then, they put together a string of 5 out of 6 wins at the conclusion of league play. They came on strong in the post-season tourna- ment but lost to league champion Elder by a small margin. They became the first team in the history of La Salle to win 23 games, the first to win the district title. and the first to play in regional com etition. The team also broke manK indivi ual and team records during the course of their ourstamiing ear. T ey scored the most runs in a single game with 23 against McNicho as. The ftrst to bat over .300 as a team. The first to hit 24 home runs during the year. The first team to have over 10 . 300 hit- ters during the year. Mike Massa broke the individual record for home runs as he hit 8 during the year. Mark Naehring became the first pla er to hit over .400 for two consecutive seasons . Chris Ernst became the irst pitcher to win 8 games during the year. These are just a few of the outstanding records broken this ear. There are more which space does not permit me to mention. It is a we. 5 hard to generalize and compare, but this team could be the best ever 0 La Salle. This is a real Chris- tian Social project performed by the dedicated students here at La Salle. 161 V The Stage Crew again played an important part in the production of the La Salle Drama Department's presen- tations. Many hours of physical, technical , and mental work were put into each play. The work done by'the crew gives La Salle another organization which it can be proud of . The Dance Committee provided much excellent entertainment during the year. They were in charge of setting up the many Soc Hops. The decrease in club members did, however, hurt the second and third teams as both faltered badly in stiff compee tition. Experience was the ingredient of success of the varsity team this year. Three of the four team members were back for their third consecutive year, Unkrich, Knapp, Rack. The other member of the quartet, Suntay. was back for his second year of match play. Early prognostications did not give the Lancers a chance to win the title. Last year's winner, Princed ton, and runnerup, Greenhills, were favored; but, the red and white of La Salle came shining through on the boards. There were many reasons for the faltering of the second and third teams. Lack of experience and lack of desire, no killer instinct - tstalemates were in vogueL Next year, with an increase in experience, the Lancers should again proudly represent the high flying Chess Club checkmates! h.. , -eh: TOP ROW: Mr. Blazer, J.
