qucomCEuqz LaSalle High School 10th Anniversary 1960-1970 HANDS- hold . .. touch ,.. reach. -.. In constant effort they work LIKE IMPLEMENTS OF A MACHINE,onIy to fulfill a day's duties. T0 the perpetual RHYTHM of a pendulum, they move , . . QUICKLY. Each achievement, only a small part of a more distant, total goal. FEET-walk ... kick . . . run. They RUN FROM and HURRY AFTER. 1 They shuffle through the crowds rushing to meet a deadline or to meet , a friend. Or they stroll, casually, leisurely, WHEN TIME IS THEIR OWN, and the world waits for them. 3 3; z i FACES - laugh . . strain ... stare. They see through yet cannot hidethemselves. LIKE MlRRORS,they reflect all that is felt within. Each pain, every fear, and every joy seeks release in an OUTBURST of expression. PEOPLE-work t .. play . .. pray. They are ALIVE and they want the world to know it. They shout words while their actions are heard by more. They work for What THEY SHARE WITH FRIENDS. The little things they do come easy because, it's funny but, they wantto love. A Man Of La Salle Brother James Daniel had to leave La Salle in the first quarter of this year to become Pro- vincial of the St. Louis district of the Christian Brothers. Brother's departure became a time when many students began to think of all Brother had done for each of them. The things Brother did are too numerous to ever mention, but the one thing that is outstanding is the attitude Brother had toward the school and everyone in it. He knew practically every- thing that was going on and always showed personal interest. He always made time to speak to anyone on any subject. Brother made the school much of what it is, and using his own words he is truly A Man of La Salle. Harriers Conditioned Both V Physically And Mentally With a new coach, Mr. Richard Meyer, the La Salle 1969-70 Cross Country team faced a challenge. The practices started out light and worked up to a daily twelve miles in a couple of weeks. A team spirit soon developed which proved as an incentive throughout the season for individual runners and the team as a whole atthe meets. The Lancers' only home meet was against Withrow. In this meet both the varsity and the reserve teams proved that they possessed many topHnotch runners as they completely demolished the Withrow squad. La Salle fin- OPPOSITE: J. Shepherd, M. Through long hard practices he prepared the varsity for the roughest competition the GCL has seen in quite some time. Spending many hours in set- ting up a well balanced attack he coached the Lancer team to break over 30 varsity records and to the first varsity victory over Roger Bacon in school histo- ry. In the first GCL meeting against Moeller, Coach Rasso threw at the Cru- saders the toughest team they would play all season. Steve Rasso showed that a forceful dedicated coach can get the most from a team. 3 Ma 37 L' $599 I - MQQL ii; $2? 1 ' Grid Squad Completes Most Successful Year Jumping off to a quick start the varsity Lan- cers trampled their first three pre-season opponents. The first game of the year against Bishop Ready witnessed what proved to be a moving force for the team - a good passing game. Senior quarterback Bob Orth hurled an 80 yard bomb to senior Bob Candenberger for a touchdown, the first of six through the air. A strong offensive backfield, led by senior co-captain Joe Crowley proved to be a real moving force all year. The Moeller Crusaders walked away victors after a lucky battle with the Lancers. La Salie went on to win five CCL games in 1969 and finished fourth in the final standings. The big victories of the year came over Purcell 36-6 in the homecoming battle and the first victory, 28-6, over the football dynasty Spartans. Rasso Developes Pride And Desire To Win A small, aggressive, defensive team led by senior co-captain Pete Duffy, surprised many opponents. Their quickness and desire held three teams scoreless and the Bishop Ready Knights to no first downs the entire game. The defensive secondary sparkled with seniors Tom Schmutte and Frank Rosenacker sharing the Sticker of the Year honors. The Lancers went on to put three players on the All GCL team, while Pete Duffy took AII-City honors. Undoubtedly, the most impressive game for the squad was against Bishop Ready as the final score read 48-0. l8, ' f$$iif$$ 2, - h $.51th RIGHT: QUEEN CAN- DIDATES; BELOW: J. Orth, B. Breetz, M. FV 1w: Hum; 1 Decade Champs Stage Homecoming Victory Homecoming '69 marked a Decade of Memories as the acknowledgment of mag- nificent spirit. The 'lideal Lancer, character- ized in the ten years of La Salle's existence, was fully realized once again through experi- ence. The opening of this traditional event was marked by a changed Queen Assembly. After the candidate addressed the students with her prepared speech, she chose one of ten questions held by Mr. Ronald Schulte, the Master of Ceremonies. The voting took place later that week on Thursday. The various con- tests of the week created departmental unity as well as a true Lancer spirit. The hall decora- tions contest was won by the Seniors, placing first, and the Freshmen, second. The Sopho- mores won the float contest. Homecoming 69 was further brought to reality by a tremendous 36-6 victory over Pur- cell. The Lancer team effort proved to be too much power for the Cavaliers to overcome, as the Defense kept their forceful image throughout the battle. The highlight of the game was the superior passing ability of Quarterback Bob Orth, who sparked the heroes of the Big Game into action. Bob threw three of his fourteen TD passes of the season in this game, as La Salle experienced its pleasurable Homecoming victory over the no-threat Cavaliers. V I 5v. v e . Ion . o .p a A A Decade Of Memories Produces Medieval Days The magnificence of the Lancer was por- trayed by the loyalty and spirit of all who be- came involved and put their hearts and hands into Homecoming '69. The past Decade of Memories captured the minds of everyone who stepped inside the Castle of the Lancers. The atmosphere of Medieval Days was cre- ated by the story book castle constructed by the wizard of the Round Table, Br. I'Merlin Pilch. The Castle of La Salle became the ideal place for the 250 knights and their ladies, who danced to the music provided by the Pete Wagner Orchestra. This enjoyable and memorable evening was climaxed when the Queen candidates, led by their escorts, proceeded to the Throne. Kris Otto, a senior at St. Ursula, was led to the Throne to take the Queenship of La Salle upon her shoulders by formally accepting the crown and robe of royalty from last year's Queen, Peggy Strasser. Soc hops turned out better than expected with large profits used to benefit the school. Coffee houses provide the stu- dent with a quiet atmosphere for listening to music or for talking things over with friends. Pep rallies provide the student body with a chance to show their pride in their school. Student Council also sponsors the dances. All proved to be a huge success with the music and decorations being the best in the area. The Council also sponsors Homecoming and Loyalty Week. The Queen Assembly and the decorations for both occasions were run by the Student Council which also provided the prize money for the contests held during both of the occasions. Council Holds Elections During the week of April 6, each student running for Student Council was campaign- ing. There were posters and little cards all over everything, including the students. On Tuesday there was an assembly to hear the speeches of the campaigning students. Some revolutionary ideas and many old ones were brought out in these speeches. On Thursday, the ninth, the actual balloting took place. Fri- day was the day the results were made public. The new Executive Counselors were to be Steve Chabot, Steve Grote, Jim Walsh, and Thad Rahrig. Officer Installation Assembly After nomination, homeroom repre- sentatives for the student council were elected after a week of campaigning. The following week brought Mayor Ruehl- man to La Salle to install the new Student Council officers. His speech pointed out the importance and necessity for this type of government for a school and for the community. After he was through, the students looked upon Student Coun- cil in a new light, a light of reSpect. L- T! Il' Q ? A Time To Look At Yourself It was a time to look at yourself through fele low students. Many seniors were surprised at how much they learned about themselves on their two day retreats in Mt. Adams. They were even more surprised to find out how lit- tle they knew about their friends, who they thought they knew so well. There was a spirit of love and friendship that few had ever expe rienced before. There was a new spirit in the senior class, one that few hoped would ever die. ll A Man For All Seasons The Drama Department's fall production was a huge success due largely to an excellent performance by Rick Franz as Sir Thomas More. Fine supporting roles were also por- trayed by Mike Knue, Dan Klein, John Mat- thews, Mike Shooner and Vicky Donaldson. This play did not depend on one character as the plot was woven around six main Charac- ters. The characters learned to work together through the hard work of Mr. Sauerbrey, the play's director. After losing three starters from the 1969 District runners-up squad, Coach Cady foresaw a year of re- building. That rebuilding was marked by 15 losses and only five wins. This record, however, did not show the spirit and teamwork they displayed. 71,35, Finishing seventh in the GCL, the Lancers twice downed the last- -year Rockets of McNicholas. Victories were also taken over Purcell, Woodward, and Newport Catholic. Co- -captain Jeff Newberry was selected as the team' 55 Egmm most valuable player. Bob Orth was named Best Defen-' sive; Bob Bollin, Mosfgitiuglgw Bill Ko. ver, Best freer, W thronercerItage; and Ralph Harnish eger,.;Most im- ' upmved. Sophomore Dan Whagen shows great prom- ise in the next two years as he was named Rookie of the Year. sf Eighth Annual Christmas Concert Best Ever The 1969 Christmas Concert had to be the best in La Salle history. It was presented by two hundred working Band and Glee Club members. The first half was mixed with senti- ment and variety as the band, under Mr. Biss- meyer, presented 'lThe March of the Golden Brass and The King and I. Mr. Schulte and Br. lngnatius then directed the Glee Club in some contemporary songs such as Climb Every Mountain and Camelot. Both the performers and the audience got into the true Christmas spirit when HAngels We Have Heard on High and HAdeste Fidelis were performed by the combined forces of the Glee Club and the Band. The Christmas Con- cert was also blessed with the best ever at- tendance of over two thousand people for the two night stand. The patrons paid a fitting tribute to the hard work and fine performance. FART'kIr'ATIoH'w must; 5: Magnified Loyalty Week The spirit of the ideal Lancer once again came from the depths of the students' hearts to be expressed through the various organ- ized festivities. Opportunity marked the var- ious events of the week, which were altered through the students' preferences in carrying out true Lancer friendship in loyalty. Original- ity and more serious organization Character- ized the activities in essence, which were enhanced and divided among the depart- ments. A concentration was made on a more effective expression of loyalty. Each depart- ment fulfilled its duty of loyalty either direct- ed to the students and school or to the com- munity. The Seniors collected money fOr Doug Meyers who was injured in the gym three years ago. The Teacher Appreciation Day held during the week was sponsored by the Juniors. The Sophomore project was to collect gifts and send them to the Lancer Alumni fighting overseas. Finally, the Fresh men planned a day to take the neighboring orphans on an outing. Other activities were an Honors Assembly, a hall decorations con- test tplacement Sr., Soph, Jr., FrJ, and the traditional concluding Red and White Dance, The Night of Love, held on Valentines Night. Wrestling: Pride, Determination, Work The desire shown by this year's wrestling team, made fantastic progress possible. More interest and support came for the student body as La Salle experienced its second sea- son for this sport. Combining effort, hard work, and desire, the Lancer matmen climbed to 3 7-114 season record. The grapplers set a firm foundation for a good wrestling tradition to be possible in the future. Coach Ginn spent hours upon hours drilling the team and keep- ing them in excellent condition. Some of the idealistic guideiines followed by the team were: The difference between good and great is a little extra effortfi Pride is the same in all men, the difference is the method of displaying it; and A winner makes commit ments, a loser makes promises. This success ful season is much to be proud of but the fu- ture awaits an even more promising team through the desire of a group of men who set their goals high. RICHTHO;J,1:T. Senior tri-captains Tim Burke, Phil Call, and Jim Lau- tenbach posted excellent records, and worked endlessly teaching the first-year men the techniques. In the GCL Tournament, the Lancers placed fifth. At the District matches, they managed a seventeenth team ranking out of 26 representatives. Junior Tom Geiger scored the most pins and points for the team during the season. Phil Gail was named Out- standing Wrestler, while Tim Burke became Baguba of the Year, Jim Lautenbach Most Improved, and Tom Vale Rookie of the Year. The heroics of these men on the mat Inspired the other members and gave them the momentum to put forth their potential. OPPOSITE ABOVE: S. Schlewinsky, De Le Bar, D. Ginn. 0;, Soccer Season Shows Lack Of Experience The LaSaIIe soccer team opened its second year under the direction of Bro. Joseph Villobas. The squad's big problem was the lack of experience. This was es- pecially the problem in the offense as Seniors Tom Bigner and Pat Hart were the only returning lettermen. Junior, Bill Fredericks and Senior Tom Sullivan filled in two other positions on the front five. The squad never seemed to play as a team and did not live up to their excel- lent first year team. Second Soccer Season Shows Improvement With the arrival of March the soccer team began its second season. The bright spot was a big improvement in the offense. This was due largely to the fact that Junior Dave Geisey changed from fullback t0 the front line. The defense did a fine job due largely to the abili- ty of Seniors Dave Witte, Mike Cannon, and Joe Collins. Despite this steady improvement the teams 2-3-1 record, with 4 called off games, was not very impressive. The team, however was very happy with their season ending 6-0 victory over Western Hills and treated Bro. Joseph to the American custom of being thrown into the showers. On A Par With t'Oliver I A very professional performancef was the comment of several spectators of La Salle's presentation of My Fair Lady. A good high school production' wasn't sufficient for Mr. Saurbrey and Mr. Bissmeyer, nor for the cast for that matter. The key roles were played by Rick Franz, Liz Smith, and Dan Klein, with fine supporting roles by John Matthews and Don Baumann. Rick crawed into the Character of the stubborn and conceited Higgins. Liz won the hearts of the audi- ence. They laughed at and were in sym- pathy in her times of desperation. I Efforts Of Hundreds Make hLady' Success Hot off the Broadway stage and into the hands of Mr. Robert Saurbrey, My Fair Lady provided the framework for La Salle's straight smash musical. The cast headed by several veterans, mold- ed their individual talents into a close-knit production. Mr. Otto Bissmeyer's show band again played an essential role in the shows success. The stage crew managed to convert the gym stage into a 1900 London street and a dialectician's parlor. Faculty Triumphs In Overtime For the second time in school history, the faculty defeated the Seniors, 57-54, in the annual Senior-Faculty Game. The faculty led all the way, except for the fourth quarter, when a finai Senior surge tied the score be- fore the buzzer sounded, causing a two min- ute overtime to be played. The faculty led at the end of the first quarter 20-17, the second quarter 37-33, and the third quarter 47-41. The score was tied at the end of the fourth quar- ter, 53-53; the faculty scored four more points while the Seniors could only muster one. The man with the hot hand throughout the game was '4Rapid Robert Rennert who tallied 17 points. Gary Engelkamp led the men of '70 with 14 points. The fighting faculty was coached by Br. Thomas Geraghty while Mike Daush and Bob Orth directed the Seniors. The game was attended by a large crowd and was followed by a soc-hop. BELOW LEFT: Left 10 Right: M, Daush, B. Orth, L Oliverio, M. Outstanding senior pitching, the leadership of captains Curley and Rosenacker, and good defensive play by Staudigel projected this year with the only varsity title to date in any sport. The success of this season can be rightly attributed to the excellent catching of Schaible and a powerful pitching staff. Pitchers Joe Crowley, a 3-year veteran named to the 2nd GCL Team, and Jack Oliverio and Bob Suer both 2-year veter- ans listed in the GCL Honorable Mention, definitely led the team to victory many times. The team's power hitter was Mike Curiey averaging .333. Through experience and de- sire the Lancers staged an overall record of 15-4. The total runs scored this season were 74 t0 the opponents' 32 - another asset to suc- cess. The 2-year record is 34-10, including an all victorious non-Ieague record. A disapa pointment was handed the team by Bacon in the Tournament, iosing 3-0; in regular season play we defeated them 2-0 and 4-2. The pros- pect for future titles is encou raging. II 67 With A17- 3 Record The Reserve Lancers, behind excellent pitching, fielding, and hitting, captured their first GCL title with the best ever record turned in by any LaSaIle baseball team. Final statistics showed that two hitters, Bill Vorderbrueggen and Bill Troehler, hit over .400, while four others in the lineup, Dave Bass, Ron Kru- thaupt, Art Ranz, and Steve Carroll, hit over .300. The pitching staff, made up of Ron Kru- thaupt, Jack Hess, Bill Breetz, Bill Vorder- brueggen, Tom Kemper, Art Ranz, and Dave Lafary, was superb, having a total of 6 shut- outs. The pitchers gave up a mere 42 runs, while the offense scored 124 runs. One no- hitter was registered by Ron Kruthaupt. The defense was led by the remarkable plays of Dan Korfhagen, centerfielder, and Tony Sala- mone, second baseman. For next year, the Reserves have 3 lettermen returning, Gary Herzog, Jeff Herbert, and Dave Lafary. The Varsity will receive 15 Reserve Champs to give LaSaIIe a well-rounded squad for a possible GCL re-Crowning. TOP LEFT: T. Kemper; ABOVE: D. Lafary, T. Day, 0. Herzog, J. Ro- senacker, M. '70 Spring Concert Tops Tradition a One of the Biggest highlights at LaSaHe this year was the Spring Concert. The largest audience ever was witness to a truly profes- sional performance by both the concert band and the combined glee clubs. Under the fine direction of Mr. Otto Bissmeyer, the concert band excelled in such songs as Mission: Impossible Theme and Alla Barocco, while the LaSalle and Ursuline Glee Clubs, under the direction of Mr. Ronald Schulte, complimented such songs as Danny Boy, I'll Never Fall in Love Again, and Aquar- ius. The highlights of the Spring Concert were the 'Highlights From Oliver! and the very traditional Battle Hymn of the Repub- Iic presented by both band and combined glee clubs. 68 Tennis Team LaSalle's tennis team was first organized in 1965. Since then enthusiasm has increased until this year, as twenty-five aspiring tennis players vied for the seven spots available on the varsity squad. Since the team lost three singles players through graduation, Brother Norbert was hard pressed to assemble the strongest team possible. The final team was composed of - first singles, Rick Morris, Rick is a Junior with two years varsity experience - second sin- gles, Bob Stille, a senior with one year of ex- perience e and Chris Wagner, a sophomore with one year of varsity experience. The dou- bles spots are amply filled by new players on the squad - Tim Wagner, a freshman - Ray Cappel, sophomore - Chuck Sherman, freshman and Steve Otten, sophomore. Under Brother Norbert's excellent guid- ance the team has come a long way, and with six of the seven varsity players returning, La- Salle looks forward to a very promising 1971 season. 70 71 . - - ' m .... ,q- r... ,,. H. Golf: A Season Of Unfulfilled Hopes With Seniors Jerry Riegel, Ken Schon, Mike Despotes, and Tony Russo, Junior Ron Jere- miah, and Sophomore Jay Deller, the 1969-70 Golf Team had high hopes for a very success- ful season. However, the hopes were not real- ized as the team composed a record of two wins, two ties, and six losses. The Lancer squad completely demolished the teams of West High and Newport Catholic; they tied Covington Catholic and McNicholas. St. Xav- ier, Purcell, and Roger Bacon barely siipped by the Lancers, but Elder ttwicet and Moeller showed complete dominance. In the Region- al Tournament, the Golf Team finished in twelfth place. Mr. Hurley coached the team and states that next year will be a building. BELOW LEFT: T, Russo, K. Schon; BELOW: J. Riegel; NEXT PAGE: TOP: T. Russo, Kt Schon; BELOW RIGHT: J. Riegel, M. Every one present, much to the amazement of many seniors, had a very good time. The event pro- vided a time for the mothers to get to know each Other. When it was all over everyone was weil pleased with the event. 79 Senior Prom: Yesterday ll , love was such an easy game to play, oh I believe in Yesterday. All the dates, games, and good times of yesterday were re- lived in a single night; Prom night! Seniors gathered for their final LaSalle prom recalling highlights of their past four years. Some were with the girls who helped make those high- lightsr The look in their eyes assured that they would be part of the future also. But that night they lived for the present. They strolied the halls of the Netherland Hilton and danced to the sounds of the East Orange Express. For that night the seniors were in a world of their own; a world of yesterday. Just one week after their final day of school, the senior awards assembly was held. It was held to pay tribute to four years of service and dedication. It was held to recognize growth. Young men who had come to LaSaIIe unsure of the world were made aware of the peo- ple and events around them. They no longer only sensed change; they saw it happen. The assembly was held to educate. It proved that the learning process never stops. Seniors learned to accept them- selves for what they are and cannot change. For those graduates who weren't the recipients of various awards, there was still a sense of personal accomplishment. May 30, 1970; 8:00 A.M. The LaSalIe gym is empty. Five hundred chairs and the entire bleachers are empty. The stage, too, awaits the crowd to come. By 9:00, a few people begin to arrive. The early bird seniors cut through to take their positions in the first floor hall. Several parents arrive assuring themselves of good seats and a good view. It is now 10:00 and almost everyone is here. Seniors are surprised that each other has made it after all. There is standing room only now in the gym as Father Hussey leads the opening prayer. Brother Daniel Keller returns to LaSaIle to give the commencement address. Finally each student is called out to receive that much awaited diploma. Cross Country: A Very Promising Future The 1969-70 Cross Country team had a very impressive record and was, altogether, one of the best, if not the best, team which La Salle has produced in its history. Although a fine runner was lost in the graduation of Senior Mike Dourson, the team seems very well pre- pared for a fine season next fall. Mike and Russ Martin, having run an outstanding sea- son this year, will be the spotlight of next year. Various members of this year's squad and new arrivals show great potential. Winning teams are built around seniors, said Rasso. Co-captains, Pete Duffy and Joe Crowley, provided the leadership for the seniors to overcome the losing attitude and the urge to resist Change. Seniors Bob Orth, Bob Ganden- berger, Jack Oliverio, and Joe Crowley com- bined to excite an explosive, exciting of- fense which shattered almost every past rec- ord. City-wide recognition was also given to Pete Duffy, Joe Stoeckel, Frank Rosenacker, and Terry Flanagan for dominating a tough, resistant defense. But it was the consistent play, the determination, the spirit of the un- heralded seniors such as Phil Gall, Tony Fede, Tom Schutte, and Mike Curly which made up the nucleous of the first winning team. Their desire to win resulted in rewriting the record books and, most of all, posting a 7-3 record which begins an era of winning footbail at La Salle. TOP: FIRSTROW: T. Plummer, M. The team, led by Coach Jack Broxterman, held spirit and optimism high through a duration of many difficulties. The Reserves got off to a someh- wat slow start losing their first few games. In the District meet, the mile relay team took 4th place while in the 2 mile run Mike Martin took 3rd and Russ Martin took 2nd. All of these runners qualified for the Regional meet and helped La Salle finish in 9th place of 165 the 40 teams in the district. This is the first time La Salle has qualified this number of runners for the Regional meet. In the Region- al meet, the mile relay finished 6th, Russ Mar- tin finished 5th in the 2 mile run while Mike came in 2nd and qualified for the State meet. This is the first time La Salle has qualified a runner for this meet, as La Salle finally goes Up State in Track. Mike ended 10th in the State in the 2 mile run with a time of 9:39.8. If it were not for the posters created by club members, many students would be in the dark concerning certain activities at La Salle. The Club has provided posters for bali games, the play, the musical, etc. For the second year in a row, Mr. James Hastings was the moderator of the Poster Club. 168 Speech Club Memories This school year was a year of innovation for the La Salle Speech Club. Instead of holding just one contest at the close of the year, to determine the top orator, the meme bers decided to hold competitions at the end of each quarter. Don Yelton placed first in three straight contests, with Mike Bockelman taking second place each time. Steve Henne, however, defeated Don by a slim margin, in the fourth quarter. In addition, Jay Delier brought home the first place award from the Annual Cheviot Eagles Contest. Finally, in an attempt to promote greater interest in public speaking, the club organized the first annual schooI-wide contest to determine La Saile's most outstanding Speaker. The rea- son: a great director, and probably the strongest dramatic cast in the history of LaSalle. Mr. Sauerbrey is not the swaggering Hol- lywood' type that one might expect. He is a quiet man who has the ability to pull every bit of acting talent out Of his actors. He trans- forms fair actors to good actors; good actors to great ones. To honestly say which actor stood out in his performance would be to list the entire cast. All around, thanks to cast, crew, and Mr. Sauerbrey, it was a production to enhance LaSalle's already superior reputation in drama. My Fair Lady Another Height In LaSalle Musicals .
