Cross Country Seventh in District Hampered by unseasonably cold weather and a few untimely injuries, the Lancer Harriers, led by first-year coach Mr. David Fairchild, had a tough season. The Lancers opened their 1969 season with two hard victories over Western Hills t20-35l and Aiken 09-36, before bowing to Mt. Healthy t20-35l on their own course. However, the Lancer CC men bounced back against Harrison, beating them t15-40y by taking the first five places. But the Lancers, without the help of two regulars, 16 were in poor form for the G.C.L. Meet. They took a fifth place. However, in the Cincinnati District Meet, in which junior Mike Dourson won a med- al, they looked much better e LaSalle placed seventh out of 26 teams in their heat. In the last meet 0f the season, the Lancers were pitted against Roger Bacon, the team which placed sec- ond in the G.C.L. In a wellvrun race, Bacon emerged the winner by one point. The teamls prospects for next year look very en- couraging. Although next yearts squad will be without the services of seniors Bob La Chance and Jim Reuter, it will have ample talent in juniors Mike Dourson, Ron Scherzinger, and Jeff Newberry. SOHI Rasso Takes Over; New Era Begins New football coach Steve Rasso said at the beginning of the T68 foot- ball season that his main job was to develop a ttwinning attitude? He may have done just that. The football Lancers, under-manned and under-sized, struggled to a 2-8 record, but there was something dif- ferent about this season. A new era for LaSalle football had started. It seemed as if both the team and the fans expected to win nearly ev- ery game. The Lancers, however, simply did not have enough strength to overcome the other G.C.L. teams, with the exception of McNicholas. The other win was over neighborhood rival Aiken. Af- ter beating Aiken in the second game of the season, the team had rough going until the McNicholas game. After a frustating loss to Newport, the team put it all together for Homecoming as state- ranked St. Xavier squeezed by them, 10-0. The Lancers closed out the season by losing to a strong Roger Bacon team. 18 LEFT CENTER: T, che UH, F. Roscnucker UOL D. Burke Hm, P. It is the building of floats and decorating of balls. It is the football team practicing and the bonfire 0n Satur- day night. Homecoming is a feeling of unity that brings the whole school together. And Homecoming is a game. This year it was against St. Xavier. The spirit of unity infected the football squad, and the team played its best game of theyear. LaSalle held the states seventh- ranked team scoreless for three quarters, while making a serious offensive threat itself. It was only in the final period that Xavier was able to score. The gym and stage were restyled as a courtyard and throne room, primarily through the work of Mr. Schulte and co-chairmen Jim Sullivan and Mike Foertsch. Approximately 375 couples danced to the music of old-reliable Pete Wagner and his orchestral Later in the eve- ning, Mr. Schulte was surprised with a plaque given in recognition of his outstanding loyalty to 24 LANCER PRIDEIS RIDING HIGH LaSalle. The main award of the evening went to Peggy Strasser, a Mercy junior, who was crowned Homecoming Queen for 1969. It was an enjoyable but very tiring evening. Only with a great deal of anguish did a large number of Lancers go to school early the next morning to gather wood for the Saturday night bonfires, or to the construction site of their Hoats to help put on the finishing touches. It was all part of a tryng but wonderful Homecoming Week which was dis- tinctively i69. CENTER OF- POSITE: Joe Crowley crowns Peggy Strasser: ABO VE OPPO- SITE: S. The question was addressed to Archbishop Alter, present by proxy tat lefty at the senior retreats. Somehow it seemed very pertinent. For this is what the retreats were, modern. They were not just an updated version of the ttclosed re- treat, but something new and entirely different. The re- treats did not concentrate on individual meditation, but emphasized ttinterpersonal relationshipsi' and how to make them worthwhile. The atmosphere was informal and very appropriate: tiltis not bedlam, ifs intense friendship bounew ing off the walls and everybody acts as one? In this context, Mass became relevant to many seniors for the First time. So applicable to life was it that many returned to Holy Cross Monastery in the ensuing weeks to participate more. Fathers Bob, Jim, and Al ted the groups through exercises designed to break away the phoniness accumulated in 17 years. They helped you be yourself to the world and to your own mind. Senior guard Tim Seifert came on fast and gained a place as a starter and tri-captain with Schoenfeld and Bare. Junior Bob Orth, up from the reserve squad, earned the other guard position, An unexpected boost came from junior transfer Jeff Newberry, who rounded out the starting five playing at forward. There were some bright spots during the season, such as the two defeats the team handed Bacon, and the late-sea- son win over Elder. As usual, not only the team but the whole student body was ttuph for the tournament. In the first game, the Lancers played a husky Norwood team that tried to utilize a sagging-zone defense against high-scoring Tom Schoenfeld, but the team pulled off a 53-47 victory. In the second game, Aiken was no match for the Lancers, who had by now jelled into a great team. The first- string sat out a good portion of the final quarter as the team coasted to a 78-53 win. LaSalle Upsets PHSL Co-Champs Coach Bill Cadyls squad had passed the first test, but now they had to face PHSL co-champions Withrow, the tournamentls fourth-seeded team. The Lancers soon found out why Withrow was seeded, as they had rough going the whole game. The teams traded baskets for three quarters after Withrow had jumped into an early lead. Finally, with about two minutes to go in the fourth quart- er, the Lancers tied the score at 56-56. The game was tied again at 60-60 with a minute left. Guards Bob Orth and Tim Seifert then stole the ball, Sei- fert was fouled and made one of two free throws to put the Lancers ahead. LaSalle again stole the ball from Withrow when they brought it up court, but with ten seconds left, a Withrow guard stole it back, drove to the basket, and missed. The Lan- cers had won, 61-60. The team turned on all their talent in the next game against the other PHSL co-champion, Taft. They were behind only once in the game, 2-0, and were ahead by as much as 16 points. Stop LaSalle The Lancers were now in the district finals. Their opponent was Purcell, But the dream was to be ended a little sooner than in 1967. Early foul trou- ble and the imposing presence of Derrick Dickey were enough to beat LaSalle, 54-49. Tom Schoen- feld again led the Lancers, as he had throughout the regular season and the tournament. His out- standing play earned him all-league and all-city honors, But, as in the case of any successful team, there was a great team effort. Loyalty Week; Full of Novelty Crystal snowflakes and snow-covered trees greet- ed the arrival of spring at the Loyalty Dance in late February. No one was sure whether the deco- ration crew was poking fun at the tickle Cincin- nati weather or had simply run short of props. But the decorations were good, if unseasonal, and ev- eryone had fun dancing under the ttfalling snow to the music of Frankie Brown and his Orchestra. The dance was a great end to a successful LOyalty Week which included the first tand maybe 1350 annual Slop Day, a pit rally, and a big win over McNicholas which gave the team momentum for the tournament drive. This being Guyts final appearance in a LaSalle produc- tion, he was determined to make it his best. And that he did as he utilized his lively spirit and versa- tile talent to go out in style. However, Guy was not alone in the spotlight. His leading lady, Liz Smith, seemed to capture the audience with the warmth of her singing. George Schuster turned in 43 an uproarious portrayal of old Mr. Spettigue. George had the people howling with laughter at his various antics, such as chasing Guy through the audience on a bicycle with his cap flapping in the wind One has to keep in mind that the success of the show involved the hard work and cooperation of the entire cast and stage crew, not just the three performers who brought the audience to their feet. 1801 ' . He came to improve on a system that he had set up eight years before. Brother Camillus, the first principal of LaSalle, headed an evaluation committee of six Christian Brothers who studied LaSalle for three days at the end of January. The evaluators did find faults in the school but the primary question of whether LaSalle is needed was answered: nLaSalle is a great school, necessary and worth- while to this community? r180 VE: Mr. Sauer- brey: .4 BO VECEN- TER: Mr. Hastings, Mr, Hurley, COA speaker; FAR RIGHT: Brother Cumillus.C. Twenty-four new teachers joined the faculty, six of them graduates of LaSalle. Problems of Democracy and Religion IV were combined into a two-hour course, Chal- lenges of America, which was team-taught. Ju- nior religion, senior mathematics, and World Cul- tures were also team-taught, as the school pre- pared to innovate modular scheduling. ttSchedule 3W became a regular feature. Every Monday some sort of faculty meeting was held. Even the allotted time was not enough in some cases, however. The COA teachers often took time off in the mornings to plan chapters. Track Team Shows Strength, Team Effort The LaSalle tracksters, led by Mr. David Fair- child, continued their winning tradition in the 1969 season by compiling a 5-3 won-lost record. The Lancers showed strength in their individual performances, but lacked depth in some areas. This did not hamper them at all, however, in giv- ing a great team effort. 56 Probably the outstanding individual performer on this yearts team was Jerry Siemer. Siemer, who threw the shot put, was consistent throughout the season, and topped off the year with a toss of more than 54 feet to place seventh in the Region- als. The 1969 varsity was made up primarily ofjuniors, many of whom will be back next year. Mike Young, who is a dis- tance runner and pole vaulter, is one of these un- derclassmen. He holds the GCL reserve record in the latter. Mike Dourson, the record-setting two- miler is also a junior, as is Chuck MacDonald, who holds the LaSalle record for the low hurdles. A strong reserve track team will graduate to the varsity next year, giving an added advantage to the Lancers. Elmer Kemen will take over the shot put from Jerry Siemer, and the sprints, perenially LaSalleE weak point, should improve. The Lancers finished with a 16-5 regular season record while being nar- rowly nosed out for the GCL crown. The squad was undefeated in non-league games, but lost to Moeller, Newport, Bacon, and Elder twice in league play. During the season, the top hitters among the regulars were Jim Sullivan, Butch Ek- 60 strom, Jim Riese, Greg Grove, and Steve Day. With Sullivan leading the way with a .350 plus average, these players hit around or above .300 throughout the year, and drove in a total ofalmost 80 runs. N0 pitcher had a losing record during the season. Steve Day, Neal Mersch, Don Knuev- en, and Joe Crowley combined to give LaSalle an effective pitching corps to complement the offense. However, injuries did hurt the team, es- pecially the injury to junior Mike Curley, the starting right fielder, which put him out for the season, as well as Steve Dayis arm problem. The two doubles teams, Chris Wagner and Bob Stille, and Len Grote and Rick Morris, were able to come up with needed wins and caused many matches to fall to La- Salle. Brother Jerome, in his second year as tennis coach, was able to develop the team into a winner. Though it was not a contender for the GCL champion- ship, it was able to battle Purcell throughout the year for a shot at third place. Then, in the remaining precious minutes, everyone danced or simply talked, and each senior was strangely haunted by the knowledge that in a few short days he might never again see the person with whom he had bumped shoulders 0n the crowded dance floor. And when the sounds of llAuld Lang Syneli signaled the end of an incredi- bly short evening, farewells and best wishes for the future were exchanged as the Lancers and their dates danced that last dance. The magnifi- cent hall emptied into the rainy night. No one could believe it was over. But it was. All the class of 1969 has left is memories. 'lIiOJ-ylj. Bro, Dun- icl. Bro. Thomas. Danielis Speech Given At Baccalaureate tiThere is an appointed time for everything, and a time for every affair under the heavens. A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot the plant. A time to kill and a time to heal; a time to tear down and a time to build , , . A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war and a time of peace. tEcclesiastes 3: l-8i The essence of Brother Danieiis homily was that this was a time to learn, a time to build, in the words of Ecclesiastes. Once a man stops learning he is dead. And a man who dies mentally is dead 77 forever, even after his physicai death. Brother Daniel gave his speech before the Honors Assem- bly at the Offertory 0f the Baccalaureate Mass, which was concelebrated by Fathers Art, A1, and Bob, from the Mt. Adamsi retreat house, and Father Hussey. For four years the Class of 1969 was one class. It learned together, and it matured together. It cele- brated victories together, for together it was never defeated. And now it celebrated its last Mass and because habits are hard to break, it celebrated the Mass together. ABOVE.- R. The class of 1969 graduated from LaSalle High School on May 30, in ninety-degree heat. The Signum Fidei Awards were given to Mrs. Jane Keller, Brother Alfred Koutsky, and Mr. Clar- ence Boehm. The commencement address was given by Father Francis Hagemann of St. Aloy- sius and the Alma Mater was sung for the last time by the seniors as students. The last item on the agenda was the awarding of diplomas, What does commencement mean? What is a diploma? What makes your mom cry and your dad feel proud? What is so great about it, anyway? It isnlt just a piece of paper you receive from 79 ltWhatas the Big Deal, Anyway? Brother Daniel. It signifies that youlve gone through four years: years of fun, sorrow, compan- ionship, love, hate, peace, war, learning and growth. Youlve had friends at LaSalle. Youlve known kids and helped them study and have fun and theyave done the same for you. Youlve learned to give of yourself, and if this is all a school has taught then it has taught more than all of its books can contain. Maturitya that is what this diploma means. It says you've been taught for four years and youlre be- ginning to make decisions for yourself now. After all, commencement does mean to begin. Sundries SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN FACULTY ACTIVITIES SENIOR DIRECTORY ADVERTISEMENTS ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Seniors Lead LaSalle Through Successful Year In past years, it seemed as though the senior de- partment sometimes suffered a let-down and failed to take on the ieadership 0f the school. This year it was a different story. This is not to say that the seniors came in first in every contest and won every title. The thing that made the class of ,69 different was the tremendous spirit and unity evi- dent in almost everything they did. There were two particularly big accomplishments this year. The basketball team, led by senior tri-captains Tom Schoenfeld, Bob Bare, and Tim Seifert, jelled late in the season. They played five tremen- dous tournament games, losing to Purcell in the last one, enroute to becoming the Cincinnati Dis- trict Runners-Up. The seniors also took charge in the Novitiate Fund Drive. Under the ttinspired leadershipii of Brother Thomas Geraghty and the other senior teachers, the victory was hardly ever in doubt. The drive showed the seniors genuine respect for and interest in La Salle. 82 MWxgs-r :gxermmm '- PI'L um ; xmw swam. hm I 83 Gerald Arend Robert Backscheider Robert Bare 1 Pride and Spirit Gregory Barlag Jack Barrett John Becker James Berry Gerald Betsch James Bickncll Jerome Bicdcrman Robert Bigncr Michael Bihr Donuid Bill Michael Brikenhauer Jerome Blum II Charles Bobinger Philip Bock Robert Bergman Joseph Bova Present in All Endeavors Thomas Breining Timothy Brennan Pau! It is true that graduation is the end of one period in the life of the 297 seniors, but it is also a graduation to a more demanding period of life for them. For some, it marked the end of their formal edu- cation, and they must now face the challenges in 109 the world 0fthe workingman. For others, the end of high school merely opens the door to higher and more specialized areas of education. For the school itself, commencement means another class has passed through its halls, to be replaced by a group of new faces in September. However, each class leaves its mark behind, and the class 0f 69 has left an important one. Juniors Underclassmen 110 Realize What Life Is Firs! Row; H. Amador. R, Armbruster, K, Aultz. B. Hampered by injuries, the Lancers had to rely on desire alone in the early part of the season. But with the arrival of Homecoming and a well-healed team, they put forth their best effort in attempting to con- tinue their domination over rival St. X.
