The sun rises, the air is warm, light, soft. Birds hum quietly in the still distance. Hair gently dishe- velled, eyes heavy with sleeplessness, sh0uiders and arms aching with the strain of books, a boy walks to La Salle. He mounts the steps leading to the entrance, pauses in the crowded corridor to speak with a friend, buys a pack of paper from the bookstore, enters the busy office to settle his account, then moves on to his homeroom to read those last twelve pages of Shakespeare before classtime. The warn- ing bell rings. The clock inches its way toward 8: 30. The bell rings again. He closes the English book, listens to the bulletin, dozes through first period. Class ends, he unwillingly fights his way to the first floor and his second period, makes his way to a cafeteria thick with laughter and warmth. He gulps down a bologna sandwich and bottle of choc- olate milk, discusses an upcoming test fifth period with his buddies and runs upstairs to the stale gym and the filled bleachers. He carefully steps through the noisy crowd, grabs onto someone for support and drops into a corner of the wooden seat. Time passes quickly. The bell rings. And he then follows his schedule for the remainder of the day listlessly. He shares jokes, lends his biology partner a pen, struggles through a test. He sleeps, he dreams, he waits. The final bell rings. He recklessly gathers his books, scrambles into the narrow hallway, pauses at the crowded locker area, dashes to a meeting after school. He buys a candy bar, asks another student for change, phones home for a ride and sinks into a chair at the library. He removes his glasses, rubs his raw, reddened eyes and pauses for a long moment. The day is done.
