RACONTEUR NINETEEN HUNDRED SIXTY-SEVEN LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL 3091 NORTH BEND ROAD CINCINNATI, OHIO A CHRI STIAN BROTHERS SCHOOL VOLUME 4 The sun rises, the air is warm, light, soft. Birds hum quietly in the still distance. Hair gently dishe- velled, eyes heavy with sleeplessness, sh0uiders and arms aching with the strain of books, a boy walks to La Salle. He mounts the steps leading to the entrance, pauses in the crowded corridor to speak with a friend, buys a pack of paper from the bookstore, enters the busy office to settle his account, then moves on to his homeroom to read those last twelve pages of Shakespeare before classtime. The warn- ing bell rings. The clock inches its way toward 8: 30. The bell rings again. He closes the English book, listens to the bulletin, dozes through first period. Class ends, he unwillingly fights his way to the first floor and his second period, makes his way to a cafeteria thick with laughter and warmth. He gulps down a bologna sandwich and bottle of choc- olate milk, discusses an upcoming test fifth period with his buddies and runs upstairs to the stale gym and the filled bleachers. He carefully steps through the noisy crowd, grabs onto someone for support and drops into a corner of the wooden seat. Time passes quickly. The bell rings. And he then follows his schedule for the remainder of the day listlessly. He shares jokes, lends his biology partner a pen, struggles through a test. He sleeps, he dreams, he waits. The final bell rings. He recklessly gathers his books, scrambles into the narrow hallway, pauses at the crowded locker area, dashes to a meeting after school. He buys a candy bar, asks another student for change, phones home for a ride and sinks into a chair at the library. He removes his glasses, rubs his raw, reddened eyes and pauses for a long moment. The day is done. La Salle is faces! happy, sad, worried, doubtful - a kaleidoscopic view e a simultaneous invasion of adolescent acne and foppery. It is a crowded, crunching corridor of twelve hundred boys, pushing, shoving, limping to the next class. Itts an elbow in your side, a snarl 0f displeasure, a throaty laugh . . . wall-to-wall hu- manity. Itts people learning, hoping, waiting, playing. All types of people with all types of ideas, pulling together to reach and share goals. It,s a musty gym, a dank lockerroom, a person at your side. Itts the cheer of victory, the groan of defeat, the sigh of accomplishment. Itts a solitary chapel and a packed bus. It,s a meeting with friends. Iths fran- tically putling a bummed cigarette at 2:00. It is La Salle. La Salle is the part of school away from the books. It meets on the playing field at 3:30 . .. it perfects a scene from a certain play . .. it enjoys elaborate dances, or works furiously to meet the last deadline. This is La Salle . . . it comes to life after the classrooms are locked. ltts a last-minute deadline, an uneasy band practice, a crowded dance H001, a sweaty workout on the court, a semi-formal gathering, a practice for the spring play, a rainy, damp football game, packed bleach- ers, a tense chess tournament. Itts the coming together of friends, the life away from the texts and equations. Iths the accomplishment in striving together, struggling together, living together, having fun together. lt,s the chess club, the newspaper, the homecoming game, the red-and-white dance, the yearbook, the student council. Itts becoming involved, meeting new people, seeking new interests. It,s working with teachers, sharing disappointments and de- feats, enjoying life and living. La Salle is the life after the tests are taken and the hooks are put away. It is becoming a part of the community, not through classes only, but through sweat, laughter, happiness, sorrow. What is La Salle? La Salle is a dirty red-and- white schoolbag, an empty cor- ridor, a wall of lockers. La Salle is books and paper, pens and pencils, 2 bottle of milk and a piece of pie. La Salle is a cafeteria, a hot classroom, homework and wor- ries. But in its own special way, it is uniquely itself, a building of learning, laughter and mem- ories; a community. 54.5: :51: 5.54 11 2 La Salle is. . . Great People La Salle is teachers, dedicated men and women who manage to survive on meager salaries, diverse skills and iron nerves. Enter 1200 teenage boys . .. a menagerie of erstwhile scholars with 1200 stomachs full of in- digestable remnants of breakfast, 1200 different shades of daydreams, sharing only their more or lessinsatiable thirst . . . for knowledge. Each day the teaching staff of La Salle bravely faces this human, or inhuman situation. Each must be a pedagogue in addition to being a combination brother, zookeeper and abnormal psychologist. The teachers of La Salle have the dual purpose of instructing these men and giving form to this group of scholars who make up La Salle. La Salle ... Lancers ... faces ... things , . . La Salle is all of these things, these people, these feelings. But what brings the students closer together and takes the school out to others is what goes on within it,s walls within a year . 1. to these men . . . this community. Though they were unable to win the very large meets, they topped most of the three and four team meets. Without a doubt it was determination and endurance that characterized the Cross Country team of 1966-67. First Serious Production, Menagerie, Emerges Success La Sallehs fall production, Tennessee Williamsh uThe Glass Menageriehb, was staged t0 impressive crowds on September 1, 2, and 3, in the La Salle auditorium. Produced and directed by Brother Pa- trick OhBrien, Williamsh powerful work starred Matt Shooner as Tom, an idealis- tic youth, Amanda halternated by Nancy Kroeger and Leslie Lazarom, Laura mam Westendorf and Barb Beckerya and Jim, played by Bill Carrelli. bMenagerie'h pleased the large crowds it drew and was highly praised for its per- formance and staging, starting the Drama Club OHIO another enviable start. 1...: E . g Lancers Show Potential On Football Field The Lancer football team witnessed quite a few bad breaks dur- ing the t66367 season which held them from reaching the top brackets of the GCL league standings. A scoreless game until the hnal few minutes of the last quarter, the Moeller battle ended in a heart-breaking loss on a rain-soaked held. Another bad break was the 16-12 loss to Roger Bacon. Aside from these games, the team showed tremendous ability and winning-power. 23 Lancers End Season With Strong Surge Lancers witnessed one of the best years for La Salle football during the 366367 season. The foot- ball team, coached by Mr. Robert Krueger, gave students something to cheer about when they trounced the St. Xavier Bombers, 16-6. In five years of GCL league play, this was the first time that the La Salle squad defeated St. Xavier. 25 Quarterback Harry Smith and fullback Jeff Audia ran a total Ofeleven touchdowns during the season, and Jeff often plowed through the oppo- nentts defense with three or four players trying to stop him. The whole team performed well and gained a respect for La Salle never before known. Homecoming Brings Unexpected Success Homecoming 1966 proved to be a marvelous success! Nearly the entire school cheered the football team to a tremendous 32-0 victory over the Fairfield Indians. A11 week students decorated their homerooms and the spirit cli- maxed at the game. It was the first time the students sang their new Alma Mater outside of the school, and the team, with this gigantic backing of the student body, completed quite well this week ofexeitement. 335.2 5.94 Week Of Success Ended With Rome Swings Rome Swings climaxed a bustling, eventful week of cele- bration, excitement and victory: Homecoming t66. Over four hundred Lancers and their ladies arrived at the La Salle gym, transformed into a veritable Circus Maximus by Brother Patrick Gregory OtBrien, Ed Schwegman, Jay Bockelman and a host of assistants, and spent a long, melodi- ous evening of dancing and enjoyment with Pete Wagnefs band supplying the tunes. The entrance was lit by flaming torches, Roman attendants lined the carpeted path, a blue fountain was placed in the cen- ter of the lobby, the corridors were draped in gold and de- signed with displays of Roman architecture, obelisks and urns lined the dance hoor and the blackened ceiling was accented by overhanging chandelier and white draperies. They made October 29 a night to remember. b d S a L r e v o C .5 D n e m In s e r F Hundreds ofnewly-arrived freshmen invaded the quiet halls of La Salle and descended upon the gym for a long, rigo- rous day of contests, rivalry, and just plain fun for the Freshman Gym Day. Under the direction of freshmen instruc- tors and assisted by volunteers from the student council, the boys played, ate, drank, got to know one another and be- came better acquainted with their school. Prizes were awarded to victors in the competitive activities. As You Like If McAuley and La Salle joined forces to present Shakespeartfs classic Gmd slightly revisech come- dy, As You Like It to huge crowds in the MCw Auley auditorium. Produced and directed by Brother Patrick O,Brien and Miss Marjorielaine Menke, the Bards bite was tightened in a comfortable adap- tation. The large cast was led by Dick Beischel, Larry Meyer, Paul Besedick, Erin Murphy and Janet Steinbeck and displayed for its audiences a high quality performance. Junior Retreat Sets Pace For New Ideas The Junior retreat for 1966 was an experiment to test the maturity and religious responsibility of the adolescent genera- tion. The retreat was a one-day, afternoon-evening ttget-togeth- ertt for the Juniors at which the participants heard sermons, joined in discussions, ate, and played together. This new and refreshing approach to the general idea of a retreat was, for the most part, very well accepted by both the participating students and the interested faculty who assisted as well. Milford Again Sets Stage For Traditional Senior Retreat All the seniors experienced three, se- cluded days in a closed retreat at the Mil- ford Retreat House. A lot of time for per- sonal rehection in spiritual areas was al- lowed and the opinions of others were red spected. Under retreat master, Father Lipps, many realistic discussions evolved. After the three days, most of the seniors left with at least some questions un- answered. LoSaIIe Hops Bring New Sounds, New Faces On the nights of September 17th, December 6th, February 2lstl and May 3rd La Salle held its sock hops. These dances were for all the students and it seemed that all the students were there. The capacity crowds listened and sometimes could almost dance to the sounds of the Us Too Group, the Gentry's. and the Dynamics. The PTT.A. responded to the request for chaperones. The faculty allowed the slick-steppers to come in casual dress, which seemed to be the reason for the huge crowds. Despite mixups in coats and purses La Salle produced four successful dances for all those interested Ta . a $3! a . r, j r w u y : l ' ml? The audiences heard both Christmas standards and Broadway showtunes. The Glee Club, under Mr.Schu1te,sangtunes from Funny Girl, Music Man, and The King and I. Mr. Bissmeyer, directed the band in a medley from The Sound of Music. The second half was devoted to the Christmas theme with the com- bined forces performing Drummer Boy, Carol of the Bells, and Oh Holy Night among Others. The variety of music kept the attention of the audi- ences and made the La Salle Christmas Concert 1966 a success. f :1 La Salle Earns District Crown In Hard 63-60 Baffle After defeating McNicohlas and Elder the Lucky Lancerst displayed skill rather than luck in overcoming both Hughes and Norwood in their march towards the dis- trict tournament game with Mariemont. The game was a battle all the way. Tied scores and one point leads dominated the match. Chuck Kromeris basket at the end of the game put the Lancers in the winning circle with a 63-60 victory. Lancers Bring Home Second Trophy With Regional Championship ttThe La Salle team looks like a forest out there? warned a Tipp City coach. ttWe play to win? answered Cady. ttLa Salle,s Cinderella team hasntt much of a chancef, was the local paperst opinion. And that was how things stood going into the game with Colrain. Thousands swarmed to Cincinnati Gardens to witness the battle for the regional crown. At the half the La Salle team led by one point. In the second half Chuck Kromer scored 18 points to spark the team to a 70-58 championship. All these were in the minds of the team and fans as they rode the trip to Columbus to meet tTechi. All of Cincinnati sat before their TV and radio sets to follow the Lancers. With seconds to go the Lancers gave up a one point lead to make the score 63-62. Chuck Kromer was stopped in a lay-up attempt by a 6866 giant who grabbed the ball in middair to end the game at 63-62. La Salle lost by one point and so the greatest moment of La Salle history began to become a memory. 46 w nnna mnmww' Nominations, Campaigns And Elections Discover Student Council, 67-68 Student Council election campaigns began early in April and a week of campaigning, speeeh-making, and pleading was cli- maxed with a voting assembly for the student body. Nominees anxiously awaited the results. When the winners were announced it was seen that Dan Lee had been elected Pres- ident and that the other offices were to be tilled by Marc Seifert, Larry Koepfie, Mike Wendiing, Allan Kuhn, Mike Foertsch, Matt Shooner and Tom Collins. Plans were set in motion and the new officers prepared to take over their new responsibilities of the following year. 51 Faculty Defected In Basketball Battle With Seniors Of '67 The annual Senior-Faculty game was an exciting battle this year and hundreds of Lancers as well as several students from neighboring high schools found it to be quite enjoyable. Our ill-fated faculty seemed to have little support from the bleach- ers but as one junior said, hplayed like the Globe Trotters? An interesting side of the teachers was discovered by many of the students and a good time and lots of laughs were shared by everyone. Lcmcer Track And Field Teams Show Perseverance Coach Dirr once again said that this yearts team would be the best yet. Before the season was half over four school records had been broken by Chris Statt, Ralph Dehner, Paul Kramer and the mile relay team. Team Effort Brings Home Trophy For Reserve Team The spring of ,67 proved to be an excel- lent time for La Sallehs varsity and reserve track teams. Both teams did exceedingly well, breaking track and heid records seemed to be the most popular thing to do. There were a few minor dimculties and ad- justments which had to be taken care of but after the season got under way the teams shot to the top. Prom-The Beginning Of The End For Seniors The hit of the senior prom turned out to be a movie pieced together by senior Norb Kinross. Intended to show the teach- ers of La 83116 as hhreal fine guysfj the film included hilarious shots of teachers in unusual situations.- The guidance counse- lor was seen crying out his problems to a bewildered student, Mr. Schulte was drenched by two hre-preventing students as he tried to sneak a smoke, and Mr. Kruegcr bowed his shiny, bald crown to reveal the words hhThe Endh painted across his forehead. 58 Prom Night '67 Marked By Laughs, Memories, Honors In the elegant Casino Room of the Lookout House, La Salle seniors danced with their dates, talked, laughed and had a general good time with friends and teachers who they would soon be leaving. The girls were beautifully dressed in evening gowns to set off the formal dress the seniors wore. During special ceremo- nies Jerry Miller was named Mister La Salie for 1967. The seniofs most important social event ran smoothly and created for the seniors leaving La Salle the memories appropriate for the occasion. Oliver! Draws Huge Crowds; Achieves Standing Ovations Lionel Barths Oliver! was given a huge, highly impressive production under the direction of Brother Patrick OaBrien, assistants Brother Daniel and Mr. Schulte, and student direc- tor, Leslie Lazaron. The acting was surprisingly adept, with Bill Carrelli, Roseanne Weber, Guy Hempel, Ken Jansen and Steve Goodman very professionally leading a large and enerw getic cast. The show band was superb, the lighting and stage management, excellent. And it was obvious to all that the long hours ofhard work certainly paid 01?. Oliver! Given Highest Praise Groups began to practice. Directors grumbled. pulled hair, crossed their tingerst And after months ofwork, Oliver! emerged on the La Salle stage. They compiled a 6-6 record in the G.C.L. and defeated their one non-league foe, Oak Hills. Junior Dave Cappel was a consistent number one singles man and supported the other players in team spirit and determination. However, the real leader of the team was Chris Stenger, a senior outflelder who led the team with a .355 batting average, 3 home runs, and 19 runs batted in. The baseball team finished the season with a fine 14-8 overall record and 7-7-1 slate in the G.C.L. 69 Loyalty Theme Explored Through Spring Concert Music is a means of expressing one,s feelings, and it was in this manner that the La Salle Concert Band and Glee Club ex- pressed their love for man, country, and God. With St. Ursula Glee Club as their guests, the glee club and band presented an array of music which ranged from the symphonic, t0 the light- hearted, and into the religious. One of the highlights of the concert was the performance of ttJamaican Holidayii by the band. The concert ended with what has become a tradition: ttThe Battle Hymn of the Republic? Moms Returned To Girlhood Days At Carnival Prom Seniors and their mothers were greeted by circus clowns, entered the foyer and shook hands with a mechanical harlequin. Arriving at the dance floor, they found the Carnival domi- nated by a revolving carousel in the center. There they danced to the melodies of Pete Wagnerts band, Visited the stuffed animals in their cages, and recalled the circuses and fairs of their younger days. The happy nostalgia 0f the Carnival would make this evening one long remembered by both mothers and sons. 'Summer'rimet Theme Of Junior Prom La Sallets juniors and their dates enjoyed the atmosphere provided their prom by the luxurious surroundings of the Lookout Housets Casino Room. The music was soft and appropriate for the occasion. Pete Wagnerts Orchestra provided the melodies which aided greatly the overall effect of the Summertime Junior Prom 1967. Seniors End Four Years As A Strong Community In Baccalaureate Mass The seniors of La Salle experienced and celebrated their last religious service at the Baccalaureate Mass held in the schooFs gym. Every La Salle studenfs career at La Salle be- gins and ends with mass, thus symbolizing the religious edu- cation he has received. Memorial Day Marked Senior's Graduation Memorial Day, May 30, 1967, marked the graduation of the class of ,67 from La Salle High School. The speaker was Father Paul OiConnor, President of Xavier University. The 266 gradu- ates received 38 scholarships. This was more than any other class from La Salle had been awarded. It is the catalyst behind every phase of life at La Salle. Both Brothers and lay teachers give unselfishly to such activities as coaching, di- recting plays, and supervising the many organiza- tions formed at school. It is a common sight to see many members of the faculty still at school in the late hours 0fthe night. Another important unit ofour faculty is the maintenance staff. Supporting an ever-growing school like La Salle is a difficult task which our staff accomplishes quite smoothly. The secretar- ies and cafeteria workers carry out their duties as emciently as could be desired. The interest and help given by all of our faculty members is one of the main reasons for the suc- cess and unity ofthe La Salle community. Bro. Luke Raymond Bro. Humbert Alfred Fr. Thatls a truly monumental undertaking for any team, and one you donlt expect of any school every year. But with the students them- selves, itls a different thing, because each one goes through school only once. And he has to win. Welre groud to be on La Sallefs team. This campaign was one of a rather unique nature. It involved ele- phant pins and posters. It was a push for a long-lasting book by adopting the slogan ltan elephant never forgets? The basic proposition was this: The homeroom to reach 100th; in subscriptions would be given a full page in the yearbook to do with as they pleased. The idea was received so enthusiastically that first of all, there was a tie for the hrst room to reach the prescribed goal of everyone having ordered a book. The next fortunate com- plication was that other homerooms came and pleaded with the moderator to allow them to have tltheir very own page tooh if they would hurry and get in the lOOlKa. With a happy reluctance Bro. Carl extended the offer of a page to any home- room which purchased a book per man during the extended time of the contest. As a result of this wild enthusiasm for the Raconteur, you will see on the next eight pages the result of makeshift photo- graphy, layout, and theme t ifit can be called thatl.
