At the traditional Spring Concert, the band and glee club cut a high fidelity record. This year the band also announced that they were invited to play at the 1966 Orange Bowl. Besides presenting the Christmas and Spring Concerts, the band also appeared at many of the football games and even presented a con- cert to the students at MCAuley. Mr. Dowd brought several guest conductors to the band concerts this year. Miss Christine Schehr, a senior at McAuley, was featured vo- calist at both the Christmas and Spring Con- certs. Bro. Florian Leads Speech and Chess Clubs; Both Joined New Leagues The speech and chess clubs are both under the direction of Brother Florian, This year both clubs joined new league com- petition. The chars club is a member of the western division of the Greater Cincinnati Chess League, The Club has a competitive system in which the best five players of the week play in that weeks tournament games. The usual members of the team are: Patrick OConnor, Ron Dolan, Nick Christenson, John Knueven and Mladen Zigrovic. The team was highly successful and beat teams from Roger Bacon, St, Xavier, Elder, Finneytown and Harrison. The .rpmech club joined the National Forensic League and in less than one year, Eve members earned membership to the League: Ralph Weber, Bill Lee, Tom Mattie, Larry Frey and NIark Honnert: At tournaments at St. Xavier, Princeton, Notre Dame and Oak Hillsj these five members won top ratings in many rounds of original oratory and extemporaneous speaking Yearbook Finished; Only Two Casualties A loosely-knit and highly-chaotic staff ac- cidently produced a rather unique annual for the 1964-65 schooiyear. Prodded by a some- what psychotic Bill Lee, the yearbook struggled along with a highly inefficient and third-rate staff. The Racontvur will come to be regarded as one of the most interesting undertakings in the annals of publishing history. Bizarre and un- believable layouts were literally strewn on paper by unhinged and depraved neurotics. Midnight scream sessions followed eleven dclock skull sessions. Deadlines were missed, copy was fouled up, pictures were lost, editors became sick, some died, funerals wasted a lot of production time and all had fun. But it hnally happened: and here it ish THE NEW 1965 RACONTEUR. BILL LEE EDITOR-IN-CHIEF THOMAS J. Brother Cormac enrolled the Ledger in the National Scholastic Press Association. Each semester the Associa- tion rates and judges the yearis issues and places them in categories. The Ledger achieved the First Class Hon or Rating this year. Among the many new experiments the Ledger tried were interviews with noted personalities such as Peter, Paul and Mary and Jack Twyman and an expanded Letters to the Editor column. This gave the students the chance to compliment or gripe about the previous issue. Another regular feature was a column written by Dave Nickel, a talented senior, whose biting wit sparked every issue. This group, consisting of fourteen jun- iors with Brother Roland moderating, has been aiding the faculty with an inexhaustible source of energy. Besides setting up the gym for basketball games and cleaning up afterwards, this organization has operated the coat Check, built scenery for the play, set up for Mass and ushered at many social get- togethers of the school, They have also helped with decorations for various other activities. The ,9ch club is another of the service groups of the school. Mr. Schulte, the moderator, greatly expanded the membership in the 28 All Work for Homecoming; Service of Games, Dances pep club this year. Pep assemblies, homecoming Hoats, the home- coming weekend7 the bonfire and spontaneous demonstrations at football games were some of the ways the members of the pep club promoted school spirit The IJOXMT club is the smallest of the service groups. However, what the club lacks in size it makes up for with hard work, Our corridors and bulletin boards are always enlivened by the bright and imaginative posters the group produces. The club has also been able to travel to tho Planctarium a num- ber of times. This Club was cstablished not as an outlet for a hobby, but primarily as a. means of education. Some of the meetings take on the appearance of a class, since members are also taught the characteristics of the planets. P.T.A. This year, Brother Stephen directed the PTA, which has done much for La 821116 in the Five years since it was built. Some of thcir accomplishments include: purchasing Curtains for the gym windows, giving Brother Camillus enough money to purchase curtains and equipment for the stage and financing the Mom From. This organization is not, however, only useful for donating money and materials to LaSalle. It is a means through which the parents of the students have been able to contact their sonsh teachers. It is a social group which serves two purposes: that of organizing school activities and that of estabhsh- ing good parent-teacher relations. The 1964-55 season saw Coach Bill Cadfs Lancers form a 17e5 record, with second place in the GCL. With only one letterman, AlLAmerican Dick HauckeJ returning from last yeafs team, the Lancers were a big question mark before the season began. They quickly reeled off seven straight wins before losing to St. Xavier. With Haucke slowed by tonsilitis and the team hampered by the away-from-homc court disadvantage1 La Salle dropped three of its next four games. But Dick returned to health and the Lancers ran off another winning streak, this time one of eight games, before losing to Anderson in the semi-hnals of the District tournament. At the Basketball Banquet, the following awards were presented: Dick Hauckc, Most Valuable Player; Mike Crows, Best Defensive Player; Charley Middendorf, Best Outside Shot; Terry Sillies, Most Improved Player; Ken Reupert, Most Hustle; Don Schwegman, Most Underrated Player; Tim Quinn, Best Team Player. 1964-65 BASKETBALL RECORD LaSalle .. 53 Finneytown 49 LaSalle .. 47 St. Xavier 63 LaSallc . . 78 Woodward . . . 56 LaSalle . 105 Oak Hills . . . . 73 LaSalle .. 76 Moeller ..... 61 LaSalle .. 94- Purccll ...... 76 LaSallc .. 76 Purcell ...... 71 LaSalle .. 5? A complete list of his records and honors would be too large to detail herci Dick was named to evely Alerity team for three years and every All-State and All-American team for two. He was the cityis leading scorer for three years and the greatest scorer in Cin- cinnati history. He holds every La Salle scoring and rebounding record for a gameJ season, and career. In recognition of his magnificent record, La Sallc has retired his jersey and placed it in the trophy case along with a plaque summarizing his achievements. He was pre- sented with a trophy by the school which commemorated his scoring feats. The cere- mony was held before the MCNicholas game, the last home game for Dick and the other seniors. When the night of the prom arrived, both Buch old girl friend and the movie actress showed up as his date. It took some persuasive pleading on the part of the movie actress to straighten the situation out and save the reputation of both Bud and the school. NUE OF S. N 0 H M A H 3 6 Spring Concert The most sparkling event of the spring season was the annual band and glee club concert. The band, under the direction of Mr. Frank Dowd, per- formed selected numbers from South Pacific and various other productions. Miss Christine Schehr, a senior at McAuley high school, was the guest soloist. The glee club, under the direction of Brother Joel, selected numbers from Canwloi, and A43: Fair Lady, as well as a coupIe of Kingston Trio favorites. In addition: there was a barbershop harmony group, a small quartet and several soloists. At this concert, the hrst longwplaying record of a La Sallc concert was recorded, 64 La Belle Riviere The atmosphere of a 19th century river steamer was the setting for the 1965 junior prom. La Bella Riviknz was the titie given to one of the most novel proms in Cin- cinnati. On board the Chapemn, the jun- ior class cruised the historic Ohio River. The interior of the party boat was beau- tifully decorated in red and white and gold, The Captairfs Men provided the music. On the top deck, the couples could catch the romance of drifting up the silent waters on a moonlit night. Once all were aboard, the boat steamed up the river, nineteen miles almost to New Richmond. Landmarks and marinas were Jpotted all along the river by couples watch- ing from the decks After the boat returned, some juniors remained to take the decora- tions off the boat, transforming La Belle Rivikre back into an ordinary river boat. 66 67 Seniors Drif'r and Dream 68 on Balmy Evening 69 gW$sv $M$k$ivxw4a a 70 72 The Mom Prom eShades of April in Paris Torchbearers lined the driveway and lit the entrance to La 52111675 1965 Mom Prom.
