Coach Blair's junior varsity squad once again proved themselves unbeatable by storming through the league with a perfect 5-0 record. The l.V. runners so dominated other teams that they often took the top 3 or 4 places in a meet. Nine of the team's members were freshmen, so look for the j.V.'s to continue their streak of league championships next year. --Q.--fy-, ' - -' ww, 'lk ., 9 ,win ' . fi55: ..i'211'Q5 x x , .. After losing the entire starting team from 1979, the squad consisted of 4 seniors, 6 sophomores, and 6 freshmen. They worked very hard, however, and it showed in their exceptional teamwork. After starting out the season winning 3 of their first 5 games, the Lancers dropped their last 6 contests. It was toward the end of the season that they began to play as a team, though. They gave a tough Flintridge team all they could handle, finally succumbing to a late goal barrage and losing 15-6. They lost their last 3 games after tough battles, also. Leading the team were seniors Owen Perrine, Dave Carroll, and Bill Valentine, and sophomore Mike Franz. Coach Shanahan is very optimistic about next year's team. t. MW Q im , , .. aw . .X , ,,. . It resulted in a Santa Fe League championship, a 14-1-1 record at the end of regular season, and a 31 ranking in the C.I.F. 2A soccer division at the end of the year. After a strong preseason of beating such highly regarded teams as Temple City and Glendale, the Lancers waltzed through the league with a perfect 9-0 record. Evidence of their strength was shown by the fact that every member of the starting line-up made all- league, headed by league M.V.P. Owen Perrine. Their season ended with a disappointing 2-1 loss to Beverly Hills in the first round of the C.I.F. playoffs. Over the course of the year the offensehscored 75 goals, 52 in league, while the defense allowed only 12 goals, 5 in league play. With 5 starters returning from this year's team, the future looks bright for next year. .Q Q 0 p if W , , Q Q. , N i nw lwssfa- V A ..., t ' , A V . .mf as. dl, A... as gl, ....f , .W .hh .,,,i 4 'K wma' 4- 'V , B ,W L gy' 5 . With first year coach Paul Linz at the helm the Lancers finished third in the Metro league race behind Chaminade and Brethren with a 10-6 record. After starting off 7-2, the team lost 4 of their last 7 matches against Chaminade and Brethren, although they lost a heartbreaker to Chaminade, 10- 9 lscore is in setsl. ln league tournament play several players performed exceptionally well. junior Ken Lee and seniors Steve Hernandez and Mike Yim all played very strong. The top players on the 1981 squad were Hall-of-Famer Lee, Hernandez, Yim, Mike Thompson, Pete Sena, sophomore john Queen fwho was the Lance's co-athlete of the month for Aprill, Mark Lewis, and freshmen Greg Moeller and Greg Moya. The LV. team, which ran up a 9-6 record, included Marcel Labbe, Greg Dohlen, jeff Bock, Mike Clarizio, Brad Dubois, Shawn Sullivan, Don Burke, lvan Oviedo, and joe Padilla. Playing as alternates were Nick Montalvo, Laurence Lopez, Ador Camiling, and Robert Houle. With all of these talented j.V. players to pick from, next year's varsity team should have no trouble replacing the two seniors who are leaving. He hit .370, stole 20 bases in league, and fielded at a .920 percentage, all of which earned him First Team All-League, team Co-MVP, and Co-Hall of Fame honors. Seniors Mike Rossini l.375, Second Team All-Lea uel, and lohn Heslin C16 stolen basesl also performed well. LANCER RUNNERS LEAVE LEAGUE IN DUST The sun will always rise, the stars will always shine, and the LaSalle Varsity Track team will always win the league. This is the impression one gets if he has seen the track results of the past few years, and this year's team did not raise any doubts as to the truth of this statement as they trounced the rest of the league on the way to a 5-0 championship season. The Lancers defeated Cathedral K86-361, Bell-jeff C102-245, St. Monica 199-261, Peter Noster Q94-315, Chaminade C81- 46l with such great ease that they spent most of their energy racing the clock. They dominated the league finals by racking up 75 points, 39 medals, and 12 C.I.F. qualifiers. League champions and gold medal winners were: Tim Carrillo, who ran a 51.7 400 meters, Brian Green with a 4:39 mile, Mike Barrilla with an 11.2 100 meters and a 23.1 200 meters, Kevin Hall in the triple jump at 42'1 , and the mile relay team. l3:33l. Also winning medals were Nathaniel Thompson in the pole vault, laime Mejia and l.P. Hall in the distances, Tino Pagano in the shot put, and Ruben Cueto in the 400 meter relay. This year's competition did not disappoint the fans. With john Hyke and Mike Morris serving as league chairmen, the intramural football league was a big success. The season culminated with the Lancer Bowl, with Long's Lumberjacks emerging as champs. The intramural basketball league started fast, with Huber's Henry's and Velling's Villain's racing out to 4-0 records. Going into the playoffs the odds favored Velling's Villain's and the Dirty Half Dozen in the Blue division, and Huber's Henry's and Kunz's Goons in the Red division. MURALS , V2 1 8 -Rf. The month of january has had a special meaning for the upper division students here at LaSalle for the past decade. The 4-1-4 january Term program has provided many students, both this year and in the past, with valuable career insight and information. Since 1969, its first year, it has changed from a 2 week on-campus session, to a 2 week off-campus session, to a month-long off-campus session. This year was an evaluation year in which the goals and accomplishments of the program were reviewed. There was a wide variety of activities to look at. Students worked at a coroner's office, banks, the Los Angeles County Arboretum, local newspapers, laboratories, hospitals, grade schools iteacher's aidsj, on the yearbook, for the Dodgers, and in the construction business to name a few. However, only 60 percent of those who could go off-campus did. Several reasons were given for this by Mrs. Roman, the january Term director. She said that some students just had no interest in the program, businesses weren't willing to give their time to allow students to learn about what they do, many upper division students had to stay on the campus because they had lower division classes, and transportation was a big problem because of the long distances that some of the businesses were from the students' homes. The evaluation proved that a change was needed in the 4-1-4 program, and it was decided that the 1981-82 school year would be divided into 2 semesters, with no career program in january. The concept of career exploration, though, will be kept alive. Several days during the year are being set aside as job search days for the upper division, but they are still in the planning stages. january Term is not dead, then, it is just changing, and hopefully for the better. . The year started with David Carroll filling the position of ASB President, Martin Kunz as Vice President, lack Shier as Treasurer, Cary Sjoberg as Secretary, and Frank Ferrante as Commissioner of Publicity. Before the start of Christmas Vaca- tion, though, Carroll resigned his position and Martin Kunz took up the responsibilities of the president. The council sponsored many activities this year which included dances, slide shows, live entertainment, Founder's Day, and the Student Body Conven- tion. EWffr i New faces, long hours, and last-minute decisions tell the story of this year's Centurion. Under the watchful eye of moderator Br. Michael, the staff came up with many original ideas, and a few surprises. The staff was picked in May of 1980 by Br. Michael, Editor- In-Chief Mike Huber, and Photography Editor Ralph Torres. It consisted of Assistant Photography Editor Dan Shier, Copy Editor Dave Velling, a layout staff of Ken Gillett, Kurt Dalla Rosa, Robert Houle, Bill Valentine, and Chris Quinlan, and photographers Jimmie Young and Bob Rossini. It was decided upon by the student body that the yearbook would have a September arrival so as to include Graduation, Founder's Day, the Student Body Convention, and spring sports. Business Manager jerry Dea led the Ad Drive campaign, which brought in a great surplus of money. As usual, though, the students waited until the last 3 days of the Ad Drive to bring in most of the money. Mrs. Roman and Mrs. Lopez helped a great deal with the ad campaign also. The editorial staff chose the 25th anniversary of La Salle and the 300th anniversary of the Christian Brothers as the theme. The layout and photography staffs then worked with the editors in designing pages, taking pictures and cropping them, and gathering information to meet the deadlines. Ray Trejo produced the artwork and Lawrence Lopez provided the calligraphy. As the last deadline arrived in june, a great sigh of relief could be heard coming from the tiny yearbook office in the northeast corner of the courtyard. The 1981 Centurion meant hard work, deadlines, talent, ... neckties, and success! -1c,: 1 .FEB-ff: Ho. And so, we commissioned world famous photographer, Alfred Eisenstadt to photograph the scene to be used in the ad. ln it, a panoramic view of 2,000 stockholders form a large T and T on the face of the mountains. Meanwhile, 10 Air Force bombers fly over the valley and drop gold coins on throngs of adoring fans, each coin bearing the faces of our founders on either side. ln the foreground, 20 gorgeous women in wet T-shirts sit astride 20 trained African elephants. Behind them, millions of helium balloons are set adrift, each carrying the slogan, lf we don't own it, it's not worth it . Meanwhile, 40,000 trained doves tow a banner across the sky carrying the same slogan. In the center, a hot air balloon slowly ascends amid a shower of fireworks, with the beautiful Barbara Rush tOfficial T and T International Spokespersonl sitting in its gondola waving to the multitudes below. Yes, that's what we wanted. Unfortunately, after the first take, Alfred tthat nutty guy! forgot to put film in the camera, and ... well let's face it, film doesn't come cheap. So we thought we'd leave you with the memory.
