As the one teacher who taught all the Seniors he enjoys a unique positiong he is known by the entire class. This in itself makes him a fitting choice for our dedication. But notoriety doesn't entitle one to special honor, other qualities are necessary. Brother Wilfrid has been well-liked by everyone who has known him and we Seniors are not the only people who have benefitted by knowing him, there have been many classes ahead of us. But we can't over- look the fact that Brother is a good teacher. He made Chemistry one of the most enioyable and interesting of our classes. He always had an example to illustrate his point, or an experiment to supple- ment the course. And he was always willing to help anyone who needed it. He cannot be called melan- cholic for he is continuously chuckling about some- thing, his humor is unexpected and alive and he is infectiously good natured. We may forget his jokes and his anecdotes, and most of us will probably forget his Chemistry lessons, but we will always remember his smile. The Class of 1965 I Sfkfflffiffwiibli?3UY Ct. After several months of continuous disciplinary duties a person could be expected to become cold and overbearing. It is an exceptional man who can discharge his official duties with obvious success and still maintain a closeness with his subordinates. Brother Bede is such a man. Not only is he active in his official capacity at La Salle, but he also conducts the political science seminar. Also illustrative of his interest in the students is his encouragement of the Precinct Work on Election Night. He is certainly, and most fortunately, not of the stereotyped class of school officials we invari- ably picture when pondering a high school vice- principal. If he was, he would not be here. La Salle is not a narrow philosophied institution, neither is there room for a rule-reading, iron-fisted, close- minded judge on the faculty. La Salle is young and vigorous and the administration reflects this image. 5 Brother Stephen Martin F.S.C., M.A. University of California Principal Growth is the standard of the contemporary world. Yet growth without direction is neither rational nor especially profitable. La Salle High School is new. It was founded in 1956 and when it had solidified sufficiently Brother Celestine turned over the ad- ministration to Brother Stephen Martin. The school was firmly based but not stagnant. La Salle was vigorous and in the hands of a vigorous young prin- cipal. lt has remained for him to guide the earnest spirit into the proper academic and spiritual chan- nels. Under his leadership we have added new sports, improved in old ones, increased our aca- demic standing, been evaluated by Western Uni- versities and now we are going to expand. No longer is the growth of La Salle to be experienced in metaphysical spheres, but there will be a physical manifestation of our growth. The man directing this project is Brother Martin, and on the basis of his accomplishments, the future of La Salle is secure and promises to be even greater than the past. MR. We are caught in a world that is outgrowing itself. Technology surpasses comprehension and religion as- sumes an inferior role in a world of self-analysis and self- direction. So we are born, alone, and grow. And we see that what we are becoming is what we will be. Learning takes place. Watching. Evaluating. Remembering. But it is not all so stoic or passive. We practice, we do. There is less time now. Childhood is only the prologue to adult sophistication. When a high school senior takes part in student government he is no longer playing, he is expressing reality. Leadership must be developed, only it is being put to use almost before it is discovered. But we are a new generation and this is the way we are, and we thrive. Never has this been so true as it is for today's student. The La Salle Chapter of the National Honor Society sees this and tries to form the shape of the student's personal integrity. Being a member of the Society means not merely a mark on a transcript but a mark of excellence. This aca- demic excellence is augmented by the Honor Society through cultural activities in the forms of visits to college campuses, and attendance at legitimate stage productions. Within the confines of La Salle, the National Honor Society enlarges the academic spectrum through an established Honor Roll program. The school newsletter, published by the Society, keeps parents abreast of school activities. Indeed, man cannot learn by books alone. This second education is the goal of the La Salle Honor Society. Moth and Science Club To provide an atmosphere in which the interested and creative student can expand his abilities is, first and foremost, the aim of the Math and Science Club. One means to this end is the encouragement of originality in the science projects which are shown at an annual science fair. Besides being of benefit to its members, the club has also initiated a program of a yearly club project of benefit to the school. These devices would be something which would be both unusual and useful. ln addition, the club has broadened its scope of ac- tivities through various field trips to important indus- trial centers in the surrounding area, through lec- tures by noted scientists and engineers, and through educational movies which are shown free of charge to all interested members of the Student Body. The Math and Science Club, under the active lead- ership of Anthony Finnerty, can, indeed, count this past scholastic year as one of growth, vigor, and service to La Salle. Harold, the Fine Arts Forum has continued to take tremendous strides in its effort to bring an appreciation of the fine arts to La Salle. The Forum was responsible for the fine exhibitions of the works of local artists, which appeared at La Salle throughout the entire year, as well as the bulletin boards which constantly teemed with information concerning all types of cultural activities. Going one step further, the F.A.F. made tickets available to many of these events, and it was under Forum leader- ship that a sizable portion of the Student Body saw Johnny Mathis at the Greek Theatre, and My Fair Lady at the Egyptian theatre. All of this work was done by a comparatively small but hardworking number of students. In the spring, however, the Forum embarked on an ambitious new program. With the addition of many new members, the F.A.F. set up a workshop system. This innovation greatly increased the efficiency of the Forum in its attempt to enrich the students. lt was also during this semester that the Fine Arts Forum sponsored the Panic-a-Go-Go, featuring professional entertainment, which was easily counted among the better, if not, the year's best dance. lt is with pride and a sense of accomplishment that the Fine Arts Forum can review the '64-'65 school year. The Parents Association continues to be, now as in the past, one of the most important forces in or around La Salle. Through the organization parents are made aware of the philosophy of the school, its curriculum, teaching pro- cedures, and most assuredly its prob- lems. lt is the parents who wind up as bene- factors for almost everything at La Salle. In the past it was the parents who built the gym and although noth- ing as immediately visible has arisen since, the parents are continually called on to contribute to innumerable funds. It is this steady stream of parental as- sistance which makes La Salle so suc- cessful. Too Often Overlooked, So Much Relied Upon... Paced by the able running of John Slavin, George Cabot and Mike Hardy, along with Mike Stemmler, Frank Fimbres and Alan Fox, the six man Varsity squad knew defeat on only two oc- casions of their dual meet contentions, were undefeated in Santa Fe league dual meets, and the Varsity, along with an able body of fine J. Invitational run the squad re- turned with one team championship and four individual awards and continued on to place a very respectable third in the final C. l. F. meet.
