Dedication . . . T is with a sense of deep satisfaction and gratitude that we, the Class of 1948, La Salle Academy, dedicate this, our yearbook, to St. jean Baptiste de La Salle, founder of the Christian Brothers, on their 100tl1 anniversary of teaching in America. On April 30, 1651, St. La Salle was born in Rheims, France. After many years of study he entered the seminary. The death of his parents forced him to retire from ecclesiastical work, but he soon returned to it, this time in the role of a teacher. He founded his order in 1684. A great, development in ranks followed, and is reacting in like manner to this day. The years 1694 to 1717 were the most critical in his career. During these years he experienced death and desertion in his ranks, met with llagrant violations of civil justice wherever his order was concerned, was removed from office, but soon returned to it, battled with school authorities, and found his name degraded to that synonymous with rebuke and mockery. His order still meets with all these impediments, but they have become as much a part of religious life as the religious vows. The Brothers, with him as their spiritual leader, flourish amidst these rebulfs. His sensational methods of teaching, now commonplace, placed him in the annals of history. He discarded Latin as the classroom vernacular and dealt with the mother tongue, both in the texts and in reading matter, and, most important, he adopted the simultaneous method of teaching. His life and works, recognized by the Church, merited him sainthood. On May 24, 1900, he was canonized by Pope Leo XIII. His disciples still encounter persecution, lead a life of exemplary piety, poverty, chastity, and obedience, and are living monuments to their founder. Although we comprise but a fragment of the Brother's history, they, by their teachings and example, form the foundations of our lives, and it is with that thought in mind that we dedicate this, our book, to their founder, St. La Salle.

Tribute . . . O pay homage to a man to whom great tributes have been paid is indeed a diflicult task. The Most Reverend Francis P. Keough, formerly bishop of Providence and now Archbishop of the Premier See in the United States. is indeed a most worthy recipient of the praise which has been heaped upon him. By his untiring and zealous work in promoting the spiritual and temporal welfare of those under his charge, he has earned the honor and admiration of all who have ac- knowledged the fruits of his ceaseless labor. And now that he has possibly reached the zenith of his glorious priestly career, we look upon his appointment to this highly important office as most fitting and proper. While he was our beloved bishop, Archbishop Keough showed unbounded interest in the field of education. So close has been his relation to La Salle that besides being our spiritual leader, he became a true and dear friend to the students here. We will forever cherish the me111ory of his frequent visits, and we will look upon the times he has offered solemn mass at the Academy as some of our most precious moments. We consider his departure a great loss, both to the diocese and to La Salle, and it is our fondest hope and prayer that Almighty God in all His infinite goodness, will grant him the grace to carry out successfully the duties of his new ofhce.
