MAROGN AND WHITE J TRACK Soon after the cross country season ended the call for Indoor track was Issued and a large squad reported Many veterans were present and the team looked forward to a successful season After a few weeks of practlce the N IOYN were met on their own held of battle When th moke had cleared the Maroon and White held the fort the score bemg 38M to 20' 2 shadows the team swamped the boys from Ports mouth Prlory 67 to 7 and then Jumped on War wrck Hlgh to the tune of 49M to l9' 2 After wlnnlng three duel meets ln a row the future opponents of La Salle were begmnlng to see that we were on the warpath and gunning for the Armory Meet Next the team was sent to Boston to com pete ln the annual B A A track meet La Salle placed fourth ln this meet being the only Rhode lland school to score Russell agaln won the 1000 yard championship for the second year and newspapers were loud Ill their pralse for thrs fete of stamina and courage lom fought off many determined challenges to w ln m the same manner as the year before the team then prepared for the annual X M Q A Interscholastlc Meet at the Provldence Y Entering the meet w 1th only a fair chance to wln the team started to gather polnts slowly former wlnner of the meet seemed almost sure to Wm agam lhe IOOO yard run was called and Russell Ray Kelly and Bull Clegg grabbed off I0 polnts wlthout a strong brd from their opponents Hope High was drsmayed their lead of points so well burlt up was shattered La Salle was threatenlng the Blue of Hope Hugh lhe meet was gomg to be a thrlller the best lI1 the long llne of meets held at the Providence lwo events remained and Gill our high Jumpmg star was going great guns IH thrs event ALUAANGIOLDEN IL Elghty two LA s,xl.l,l4: .xcixm4:MY TlI.Xt'K sqlixl A Ak .I ,Q L , . LA SALLE ACADE V Capt Lexus of Hope Hugh and Wheeler of Technical Hugh falled at J feet 4 mche Gill w as glven his hrst champlon hlp of the year at the helght of 5 feet 5X4 Inches lhe score was then announced La Salle led by one pomt with the relay race stlll to be run La Salle and Hope High were pitted against each other ln thrs event With the bark of the glllt Zeller and Burnstem of Hope started Murphy and Powers carrred on Brlston and Cashman bat tled m the third leg and Dooley and Carr of Hope High hnlshed lt lhe watches of the Judges o opposite sides of the gym were identical ln the tmlng of l mlnule and 6 l 5 seconds After much dellberatlon the race was called a dead heat Second and third place polnts were spllt between the schools La Salle was the wlnner of the meet on the one pomt lead gained lll the hugh Y M C A CHAMPIONS were the head lmes ln the mornmg papers La Salle was stepprng to the front m the track world After a rest the team started practxce agam with the hope of an undefeated season Over to the herghts of Moses Brown they went wrth their hopes hrgh and baclc from Moses Brown with a badly scratched reputation The ualcers were a hard and desperate foe and l..a Salle lost the meet 33 to 30 lhe squad was not down hearted and tramed with the hope of wmnmg the Armory Meet the brggest mdoor meet of the Rhode Island season The day of the Armory Meet found the mornmg papers prmtmg that Technical Hlgh Hope High Moses Brown and La Salle Acad emy were the favored four At 2 oclock the meet got under way wlth the field events l.. Salle never very strong ln thls department of the program gamed but two pomts m the scramble for places At Z 30 p m the meet really started for the Maroon and White of La Salle Always strong ln the running events the team ettled down to grlmly fight the leaders lmo match them pomt for pomt lnhe l000 yard event found lommy Russell the New England champron entered ln his specialty with Billy Clegg and Mal loy The race was mtere ting between the second and third men but lnommy raced hm elf to a tew record La Salle s stock Jumped elght pomts and they were on their way The 600 yard event found Ray Kelly and a sorrel topped boy named McMahon on the starting lme for the Maroon From the start to hnlsh the race was a thriller between Ray Kelly and See of Technlcal High Kelly was not to be beaten and he gamed the tltle of Rhode Island champlon lhe crowd began to last two events People were cheering for La Salle to take the meet Thus was a hard thmg to do as Tech our arch rlvals were many pomt head of the Maroon and Whxte Soon the call for the 300 yard event was grven Dooley of La Salle won hrs heat rn the fast time of 39 I 5 seconds The fmals of the 300 were soon after the trlals La Salles Mr Dooley agam stepped away to hold the lead throughout wrth Saunders of Technical pushmg and worrying hrm Flhe record of five years standmg was equalled Dooley was agam cham pxon ID the 300 stepping rt In 38 second flat L Salle had taken three first places rn a row and had clrmbed from the cellar of the meet to take second place ln the final summing up of pomts The season of mdoor track at La Salle was a success The team had strove to heights by hght mg as a team and with the ard of Coaches Brother George and Jack Keating the season can be called the best ever Elghty th e . . .
