Y E il lflllf Gentlemen: I have been asked by your Yearbook Staff to write a few words to you as graduates of La Salle Academy. Believe me, it is a pleasure to comply. You have now finished satisfactorily your four years of High School. These four years have had and will continue to have a deep significance in your life, for you have imbibed, in a passing manner, or better, with a degree of excellence, the great and vast fields of study that are open to mankind. But whether you remember as you con- tinue your life, the binomial theorem of your algebra, the multitude of chemical formulae of your science, or the development of your country from its colonization to its leadership in the world affairs is not what counts. In these four years, you have been taught a greater thing than these tem- porary and transitory truths of natural learning. You have been taught, indeed, the most significant thing for you to know, that this life is but a forty, fifty or sixty year period of preparation for a life that will never end. It probably will not cause harm to your life if you forget the trigonometric functions, or cannot recall the date of the Louisiana Purchase, or some other fact of knowledge taught to you, but it will definitely harm your everlasting life if you forget that simple but eternal truth, that you are made to know, love and serve God. Let it be, therefore, gentlemen, a treasure, priceless to you, that La Salle has taught you indelibly, that if you gain the whole world, but lose your soul, you've profited nothing. The closing exercises of your four years at La Salle are called, paradoxically, a commence- ment, for with these exercises you begin a new era, you start your life on a new plane. May God bless you in ,this new start. Cordially yours, Brother Christian, F.S.C. Assistant Principal 2 5 th anniversary BROTHER CHRYSOSTOM LEO, F.S.C. 1937 - 1957 The Class of 1957 is happy to dedicate the present edition of the La Sallite to Brother C. Leo of our faculty. Brother Leo's first assignment to the Academy was during the year 1937. In 1954, Brother was reassigned to the faculty and placed in charge of the Classics department. In more recent years, Brother Leo has been given the additional re- sponsibility of Guidance Director. On this occasion of his 25th anniversary of religious profession as a Christian Brother, we of the senior class extend our sincerest congratulations to Brother Leo and wish him many more fruitful years of service in the Catholic Classroom. DEDICATION After the Chapel ceremonies of affiliation to the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools: l. to r.: Brother A. Philip, President of Manhattan Collegey Bishop Donohue, Commissioner Zurmuhlen, and Brother A. john, Visitor of the New York District of the Brothers. This year La Salle Academy is especially happy to offer its congratulations to Commissioner Zurmuhlen of the Class of 1914. Mr. Zurmuhlen has long been a Brothers' Boy, having graduated from St. Peter's Parochial School on Staten Island, La Salle Academy in 1914, and Manhattan College in 1918. At present, he is Commissioner of the Department of Public Works, a position he has held under three Mayors since his appointment in 1947. Because of his unfailing and constant loyalty to his former teachers, Com- missioner Zurmuhlin was granted letters of affiliation to the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools on November 18, 1956. This afiiliation represents the highest honor that the Christian Brothers can bestow on a benefactor. Presentation of Letters of Ajiliation hy the Supe- rior of the Brothers. f , X, W Aw X rx! Dan Buckley in the center of things f si A x Q THE POPES, THE CHRISTIAN BROTHERS AND CHRISTIAN EDUCATION POPE PIUS XI5 The Foreign Missions are excellent and they are necessary for the propagation of the Faith, but, today, the Christian school is the most important thing in the world for the Church and for society. The Christian Brothers must not forget that every one of their schools is a real mission, and that every Brother, each in his own classroom, is truly a missionary. I know, from personal experience, that a religious teacher can do an immense good, a good that is certain and lasting. The influence of a religious master on the souls of his pupils is, in a way, irresistible, for his teaching by word and example trains their docile will to shun evil and to do good. This familiar note has ended all previous drives and was once more the closing remark of the 1956 drive. Every record on our books was broken by this year's amazing 650'Z,. This year's drive was under the mentorship of Brother Charles, who was assisted by Brothers Anthony, Philip and Bernard. Brother Thomas' Sophs of 304 set a terrific pace right from the very beginning and they maintained this lead until the drive entered the final stretch when Brother An- drew's Seniors of 504 caught the wind and smashed all previous records with an amazing 95015. They do all the things that the Christian Brother does, only to a less intense degree. In the junior Novitiate the boys pray, study and take recreation with a view to cultivating their spirit of piety and spirit of study so that they can be more devoted and intelligent Brothers. That is the prime objective of the juniorate. The accom- panying pictures vividly portray the daily program which strives to make this objective a reality. Are these boys extraordinary students or more pious than you or your companions? No. They are ordinary lads from the same school and neigh- borhoods as yourself. It's just that they have channeled their talents and sense of piety toward a wonderful goal-the life of the Christian Brother. And every moment of their day in the juniorate is planned to make that goal attainable. 'i'i ig' V xx l Early morning rising is in the ancient tradition of the monk. The juniors begin their day at 6:00 o'clocle. Now and again the Brother Director and one of the boys will take some time for more personal talhs. In this way each boy can receive the necessary guid- ance that he needs. junior Novices have many opportunities for advancing along the way of Christian perfection. Devotion to the Blessed Sacrament is the junior Novice's greatest source o inspiration and happiness. A part of each morning, afternoon and evening is devoted to religious exercises in the chapel. The course of studies in the juniorate follows the standard college preparatory academic program. Small classes insure a thorough training. w l 1 1 4 4 w 1 . Hockey, baseball, football, basketball and swimming are very popu- lar seasonal sports at Barrytown. On Sundays and during daily recreation periods, the boys get a few moments of relaxation and enjoyment in the music room. The boys and faculty share the same dining room. Usually, while the group dines, one boy reads aloud from an interesting book or magazine. 137 Approximately half of each Novitiate group comes from outside high schools and colleges. The boys from the funiorate make up the other half. Here the Director of Novices receive a young postulant at the Novitiate. Novitiate Part of each day is spent in re- ligious studies. The Novitiate catechist is specially trained in philosophy and theology in order to initiate the Novices in the catechetical method of the Brothers. The Novitiate Year is the basic cornerstone in the formative period of the young Religious. Here he is introduced to all of the essentials and basic notions of a life which demands from its aspirant a total and complete dedication. He studies thoroughly the nature and the purpose of the vows and Rules which bind him by explicit contract with his Society. He is carefully taught the elements and practice of mental prayer which are requisite for his spiritual union with God. Through guidance, practice, prayer and study, he strives to make his own the same spirit of faith and zeal that have animated the Christian Brothers for close to three centuries. To further motivate him in his high ambition, he follows advanced theological courses which present to him the ideals to be found in the life of Christ, the Liturgy of the Church, the treasures of Divine Revelation contained in the Sacred Scriptures and the traditional teachings of the Church Fathers. Socially he learns to live, work, pray and play with others as unified cells in the dynamic organism of the Mystical Body. Here the solid rock foundation is laid upon which others can then build the intellectual and professional super-structure during the later years of scholasticate and professional training. The Novitiate schedule is a vig- orous one. The bell ringer, sum- mons the commnuity to the chapel at 5:00 o'clocla each morning for the morning religious exercises that include vocal and mental prayer and Holy Mass. Special devotion to the Most Blessed Mother is a precious her- itage of religious houses. Here the Novices make an early morning visit. The community dining hall re- veals a gay spirit during a Benedicamus. Usually, the Novices eat in silence while a confrere reads to them from some spiritual book. Zi ,J .024 . g 'IE Q The day begins with morning prayer. T -s 1. 2 - A little Community entertainment is in order on special occasions. St. Patrick's feast brought all the sons of Erin to the fore. In September, after a two months postulancy, young men seeking admittance to the Institute of the Chris- tian Brothers are clothed in the religious Habit and given a new name.
