LT John S. Luethcke :mit Q Middle East Force Staff Established 1 January 1949, Middle East Force is the only permanently assigned U. S. military force in the Indian Ocean area. COMIDEASTFOR shared base facilities in Bahrain with the British until 1971, when their forces were withdrawn from the area. Since that time the U. S. Navy has maintained only a small Administrative Support Unit on a portion of the former British base at Jufair, Bahrain. This facility serves as a logistical link and provides necessary support to ' COMIDEASTFOB -and ships assigned throughout the area. Middle East Force normally consists of three ships, including the assigned flagship USS LA SALLE QAGF-33 and two Atlantic Fleet destroyers or frigates which change periodically. While assigned to MIDEASTFOB, Atlantic units are away from homeport without repair or major upkeep services for approximately six months. Also included in Middle East Force assets are a C-131 Flag aircraft and two helicopters, one aboard USS LA SALLE and another in one of the other ships. MIDEASTFOR plans and conducts goodwill visits within the Middle East Force operational area. MIDEASTFOR also maintains liaison with U. S. diplomatic representatives and governments and armed services of coastal nations.
