The officers and crew of LA SALLE found the capital of Senegal to be a modern city of some half a million people quite different from the Africa of yesteryear. A giant printing press, which had bedecked the flight deck during our crossing, was also off loaded and turned over to Peace Corps personnel as part of Project Handclasp. Top right: Tin huts on the main road into town. Above: School children in Monrovia. Right: The first section of the press is lowered onto a trailer. ij i The death of the U.S. Ambassador to Liberia shortly before our arrival forced the cancelation of many planned activities in Monrovia. Elaborate plans for a picnic sponsored by the Armed Forces of Liberia had to be discarded. The disappointment of the crew at not having the opportunity to view the native dancing which was to highlight the picnic was somewhat offset however by the news that LA SALLE's marching platoon at least would not have to perform in the Presidential Parade.
