THE MISSIO my I To promote goodwill, mmderstanding andmutual respect and acceptance between the Americangpeople and the people of countries visited' by ships of the Force - that is the primary mission of the Middle East Force according to the standard welcome aboard pamphlet handed out to visitors. But no-one on- board LA SALLE was really able to appreciate what these words meant until the ship was actually deployed into the Middle. East-in the summer of 1972 to replace USS VALCOUR QAGF-D as flagship for 0 Commander Middle East Force. i E E - This cruise book outlines the storylof the first nine' -months of that deployment, into the yards for conversion in early 1972, down to Guantanamo Bay for refresher training, across the Atlantic. and ,around the of Good Hope to Bahrain. From there we follow tithe new flagship around the Gulf and out into the Indian Ocean as she embarked on her' first 13,000 mile cruise as Middle East Force flagship. u . V A 0 . 0 . V 1 l l l - .- ...---v , More a diplomatic than a military mission, LA SALLE's new role was as unique as the ship's new coat of white paint. Going on liberty to visit ports in Africa and the Middle East became one of the ship's primary tasks. Meeting new people, experiencing new customs and different ways of life was an everyday occurence. Names like Dakar, Monrovia, Mombasa, Karachi and Muscat ceased to be just part of a vague oriental mystique and took on a new concrete meaning for LA SALLE's crew as the ship paid goodwill visits to these ports and organized trips ashore. Children's parties were held on the 'messdecks,- thousands of visitors invited on board for tours, athletic events played, and Project Handclasp materials distributed wherever the flagship ' went. Ambassadors, ministers, tvadmirals, generals and even royalty were entertained on board the new flagship as she made her debut in the Middle East, eliciting comments of praise from the Chief of Naval Operations himself. ' E' Q . For those that served on LA SALLE from January to November 1972 and represented the United States in the Middle East it was an exciting adventure. We shall long carry with us memories of East African' safaris, the Seychelles festival, visits to the 16th century Portugese fort in Muscat' and ,shopping sprees in Karachi. But moreimportantly we shall also carry with us a feeling of pride in a difficult mission well accomplished. . One hundred and eighteen LA SALLE crew members took advantage of the photographic safari tours offered to Tsavo and Nairobi National Parks during our five day visit to Mombasa. The most popular tour, a two day excursion to Tsavo, allowed crew members ample time to discover both the wild life of Africa and the peoples of Mombasa. Tsavo National Park, the largest in the world, is a wide open game preserve of some seven thousand square miles abounding in elephants, rhinoceri, cape buffalo, giraffes, and zebras. On the first night of the safari, after a tour of Tsavo East, the group stayed at the Voi Game Lodge, famous for its watering hole where at night one can sit on the terrace and watch the herds of rhino and elephants coming in from the plains to drink their fill. The second day was spent at Tsavo West, where many men were given a taste of African adventure, compliments of African Roadways Ltd., when their drivers left the dirt roads in their sturdy VW buses to chase lions through the bush. The splendor of Mount Kilimanjaro and the frolicking hippos at Mzima Springs helped make the second day of the tour a memorable one. , . .,,..,,...,,M..,....-.......l..,.,.,,.,a......J.Ll, A +1 27 - ' - - 1,-, - ., ' Y-,J 'Q' - 'NN ' - ' LQ, 'J ' I ! s e I 1 L r I I I r I ! r I I 5 5 I l F i f l 4 1 i l l 1 F ! In an effort to alleviate some of these problems, Project Handclasp was started in 1949 by a group of Navymen in their off-duty hours. The program involves collecting donations of medicines, foodstuffs, athletic gear and educational materials from civilian sources and transpor- ting them aboard Navy ships for distribution in needy coun- tries abroad. From its modest beginnings in the forties, the program has now grown to the stature of a ,fully recognized Navy-wide effort. ,,,.-..,,--- .-.-, ,.-...-..-........1-,w-.--,..,-.....,- .:-- ...L-.. .J .-,, -,,:....,-.QQ-...Q-.-vw-1-eg-.1-if-:ef .www-'---f-'1'-' PRoJEcT HANDCLASP i ! 1 , . . 5 I 4 .
