To the Class of '77: First I would like to thank you for the high honor you have accorded me by electing me as your Grand Marshall. Secondly I would like to extend to you my best wishes for all success in the future. There is no denying that the world can be a rough place but I think that if you hold to a few simple precepts, the rough spots can be made smoother. Remember that the object of life is not the making of money. As Emerson pointed out, money may ease the way in life, but as a judgment of self-wrath and one's contribution to society, it is valueless. Remember also, that whatever you get .in life, if it is worth- while, will be gained only by hard work. This may seem trite, but too many people know what they want but find the price too high and settle for second best. It may seem good at the time but second best will give you only a life of quiet despirationf' Keep in mind that the word conformity should not be a part of your vocabulary. By this I mean that you should live creative- ly. Don't accept what is as what should be. Question, explore the universe about you and live only according to what you learn. This of course will make you different but how can you be anything else if you are going to be yourself. I would caution you that this will require of you every reserve of courage upon which you can draw but a life lived in cowardly conformity is no life at all. Let it not be said of you that you died at the age of 30 and were buried at the age of 90. Finally, I would remind you that contrary to much thinking, there is a God in whose image you were created. Any artist requires a great deal of his creation and so God does and will require a great deal of you. You must reilect, as much as in you lies as much of your creator as possible. One of the chief ways to do this is in continuing the learning process throughout life. As I noted earlier, this involved work but if perfection of knowledge is an attribute of your Creator, then ignorance can only be a slap in the face of the Creator by the Creature. Dear Class of '77, as you leave La Roche know that the love of all of us here goes with you. Remember to come home on occasion and to always be what you want to seem to be. nyagir.
