The youths of the 1950 ' s were engulfed with the bobby socks look; the 1960 ' s and 70 ' s were dec- ades of hippies and flower children. It Is now 1985. and America ' s youth have not yet grasped a single Image that can be readily Indentlfled with their generation, (except for rebellious). Today ' s youth have a wider selection of styles to choose from, thanks to the most powerful media device, (for better or worse) ever built. The 1980 ' s Is the decade of video. It Is an era In which fads and trends have shorter lifespans than the average moth. Creating the right visual Image Is almost a neccesslty In today ' s world; many teenagers follow a trend that their friends have chosen Just to fit In. while other ' s opt for their own Individual look. Today. Just as It was fifty years ago. performers have an Immense Influence on the youth of America. All one has to do today Is turn on the T.V.. and he will be bombarded with various people flaunting their fashion statements. Originally. MTV was the k primary showcase of trends and fashions, but now T.V. shows such as Miami Vice , are jumping on the bandwagon. Let ' s take a closer look at some of the 80 ' s biggest fads and trend- setters. Madonna has niade lln- gere not only accept- able, but also fash- ionable. She along with ' • »- P r I n Shiela Sheena Easton, and others are including suggestive lyrics in their music. .. , . , ,. . Another wave, led by David Lee Roth and Cindl Lauper. is making ' outrageous clothes stylish. Bright colors, numerous accesorles. and hair that looks as if it were electrocuted are the easily Identifiable traits of this fad. . .u . . .k Depeche Mode, the Thompson Twins, and the Cure are the major contributors to the Neuro look ; I.e. baggy clothes and the GQ look. U-2 and Teats for Fears helped bring long hair and ov .coats back into (ashlon, while Frankle Goes to Hollywood and Wham! are fads within themselves with baggy white T-shirts, which carry a phrase or slogan of the band , and floures- cent clothes. A feeling of patriotism, along with faded Jeans, was made vogue by Bruce Springsteen. Sport jackets worn over pastel colored T-shirts and no socks Is a style given to us from T.V. ' s Miami Vice. It Is next to Impossible to list all of the (ads of the 80 ' s. since many people still wear styles of the previous dec- ades, such as hippy, heavy metal, mod. punk, preppy, and (gasp) even the Brady Bunch look. So far. the 80 ' s has proved that the only certain- ty is change itself. While this doesn ' t provide much stability, it does make things Inter- esting, and proves that, yes, it is a mat- ter of style.

They ' re not going out, they ' re Just friends. This year, Cool Dude and Mr. Spirit were just a few motivational events to involve La Quinta ' s stu- dent body. The Sadie Hawkin ' s Dance, sponsored by the sophomores, was an event that was held this year.
